Related Titles Description Since 1901 there have been over three hundred recipients of the Nobel Prize in the sciences. Only ten of them - about 3 percent - have been women. Why? In this updated version of Nobel Prize Women in Science , Sharon Bertsch McGrayne explores the reasons for this astonishing disparity by examining the lives and achievements of fifteen women scientists who either won a Nobel Prize or played a crucial role in a Nobel Prize - winning project. The book reveals the relentless discrimination these women faced both as students and as researchers. Their success was due to the fact that they were passionately in love with science.

The Nobel Peace Prize and the Laureates holds the answers to those and countless other questions about the prize, the selection process, and the men and women it has gone to throughout the years. The Nobel Peace Prize and the Laureates
" A centennial edition of this wonderful reference work is most appropriate. It provides a biography with bibliographic references (and a photograph) for each individual winner of the Nobel Peace Prize from its inception in 1901 through the 2001 award. A sketch with references is also given of those institutions that have won. A number of interesting charts list winners in several categories gender, nationality, etc. Front matter includes explanations of the award, the committee that administers it, and insights into the man behind the award Alfred Nobel. The introductory material and all the biographic entries are concise, well-written, meet high academic standards, and are enjoyable as well. All collections." Choice "Irwin Abrams is the leading authority worldwide on the history of the Nobel Peace Prize. This book shows why!" Geir Lundestad, Director of the Norwegian Nobel Institute

Century of Nobel Prizes Recipients: Chemistry, Physics and Medicine
, edited by Francis Leroy. New York, NY, Marcel Dekker, 2003. 380p., color illus., bibliog., index. ISBN . $150.00. LC Call no.: Q141.C252 2003. Subjects:
Scientists—Biography; Nobel Prizes. Reviewer: Susan Kendall, Health Sciences Librarian, Michigan State University Library, skendall@msu.edu Table of Contents: Alfred Nobel 7 The Nobel Laureates in Chemistry 13 The Nobel Laureates in Physics 113 The Nobel Laureates in Medicine 229 Table: The Nobel Prize Laureates (1901-2001) 361 Bibliography 369 Index of Recipients’ Names 375 Subject Index 377 The Nobel Prizes for Chemistry, Physics, or Medicine are the highest honors in science and have been awarded each year since 1901 to recognize the people who have contributed to the most important advances in scientific research. This encyclopedia-style book illustrates the history of discoveries and innovations in the sciences through descriptions of these Nobel Prize laureates and their work. The three sections of this book, Physics, Chemistry, and Medicine, were originally published individually in French, but are here translated and collected together into one volume. Each section lists entries for all of the laureates by year beginning in 1901 and ending with 2001. While organized by year and by person, the science is the focus of this book because what really makes this book unique are the pictures. Beautiful color illustrations and drawings accompany the paragraph-long descriptions of most of the Nobel Prize winners’ work, and these serve to clarify and diagram the nature of what is being discussed, whether a system, a molecule, or a cell. While many other books are available that list Nobel Prize laureates and summarize their findings and innovations, I have not seen others with illustrations like these to help make the science understandable. Some of the illustrations, particularly in the medicine section, are elaborate and full page.

The not so noble Nobel Prize
Samuel Brittan: The Financial Times 19/12/03
The connection between the controversial film actor Russell Crowe and the state of contemporary economics might not seem obvious, but it exists.
Crowe took the starring role in A Beautiful Mind . This was the story of John Nash, a brilliant mathematician who descended into mental illness for several decades before recovering to become a joint winner of the Nobel Prize for economics in 1994 for his work on "game theory." While traditional economic theory was concerned with the behaviour of individuals or firms who could not affect their environment, in game theory interactions with others are studied in a highly stylised form with players, pay-offs and strategies. Game theory is now indispensable in the design of public auctions as well as in evolutionary biology. While the detail is highly mathematical many of its concepts have entered public discourse. Examples are zero sum games and non-cooperative equilibria.
The Nash Equilibrium, invented in 1950, is the best result that can be achieved by players who do not co-operate but know each other's possible moves. A standard example is that of two drivers in virgin territory deciding on which side of the road to drive. If both drive either on the right or on the left it is a Nash Equilibrium: any other result is not. But in more complex cases the Nash Equilibrium is not always the best possible one that could be achieved if there were co-operation or the intervention of some enlightened despot.

Correspondence between Woody Guthrie and staff of the Archive of American Folk Song (now the Archive of Folk Culture, American Folklife Center) at the Library of Congress are at the heart of this new site from the Library of Congress American Memory series. The featured 53 items (84 pages) of material by, about, and to Woody Guthrie were penned mostly in the early 1940s. The collection provides "reflections on [Woody Guthrie's] past, his art, his life in New York City, and the looming Second World War. . . ." Materials on this site are part of the Woody Guthrie Manuscript Collection and the American Folklife Center. Along with the letters themselves, the site also features a well organized finding aid to give users an overview of all Guthrie archival materials at the Library of Congress, a biographical sketch, and a timeline of Guthrie's life. George Catlett Marshall
Marshall's father owned a prosperous coal business in Pennsylvania, but the boy, deciding to become a soldier, enrolled at the Virginia Military Institute from which he was graduated in 1901 as senior first captain of the Corps of Cadets. After serving in posts in the Philippines and the United States, Marshall was graduated with honors from the Infantry-Cavalry School at Fort Leavenworth in 1907 and from the Army Staff College in 1908. The young officer distinguished himself in a variety of posts in the next nine years, earning an appointment to the General Staff in World War I and sailing to France with the First Division. He achieved fame and promotion for his staff work in the battles of Cantigny, Aisne-Marne, St. Mihiel, and Meuse-Argonne. After acting as aide-de-camp to General Pershing from 1919 to 1924, Marshall served in China from 1924 to 1927, and then successively as instructor in the Army War College in 1927, as assistant commandant of the Infantry School from 1927 to 1932, as commander of the Eighth Infantry in 1933, as senior instructor to the Illinois National Guard from 1933 to 1936, and as commander, with the rank of brigadier general, of the Fifth Infantry Brigade from 1936 to 1938. In July, 1938, Marshall accepted a post with the General Staff in Washington, D. C., and in September, 1939, was named chief of staff, with the rank of general, by President Roosevelt . He became general of the army in 1944, the year in which Congress created that five-star rank.
