    Richard Milhouse Nixon
Perhaps best known for faking the Moon landing , 37th US President Richard Milhouse Nixon died on April 22, 1994. He left behind him an astonishing range of sins: Alcoholism, pill popping, wife beating, perpetuating the Vietnam War , and calling Helen Gahagan Douglas a filthy lesbian. Tricky Dicky's ultimate crime was confirming the suspicions of an entire generation of fuckoffs that they, in fact, were the chosen people of their place and time. The results may be seen in the merciless attacks on the human spirit masquerading as '60s nostalgia, ridiculous cam girls indulging in astrology , and the otherwise unexplained persistence of adulation for Creedence Clearwater Revival Made two visits to China to meet Mao . Appointed Elvis a secret special agent of some sort. According to convicted Watergate criminal John W. Dean, Nixon wanted to firebomb the Brookings Institute think tank, because they had possession of certain unspecified, but apparently important documents. Yes, firebomb. Pardoned Jimmy Hoffa on December 23, 1971.

    Richard Nixon
Nixon was the only President to resign in disgrace. His crime was his involvement in the Watergate break-in and coverup. During his administration he established relations with Communist China and extracted the United States from Vietnam. Elected:
    The Early Years
Richard Nixon was born in Yorba Linda, California. Nixon grew up among the poverty of the Yorba Linda. Twice he nearly died, once from an accident and once from pneumonia. During the time when the Teapot Dome Scandal became public he told his mother one day:" I would like to become a lawyerÐ an honest lawyer who can't be bought by the crooks.". The most traumatic event of his childhood was the death of is brother Harold from tuberculosis. Nixon was educated in public schools. He entered Fullerton High schools, and in his junior year he transferred to Whittier High School in 1930. He graduated near the top of his class. Nixon attended Whittier College from 1930-1934, graduating second in a class of 85. He was President of the Student body. He went on to Duke University Law School on scholarship. He graduated in 1937 second in the class of 37. He was admitted to the California Bar the same year. Nixon practiced Law in Whittier after being admitted to the Bar. In 1940 he became involved in forming a company to manufacture frozen orange juice. The business failed within two years. In 1942 Nixon joined the navy. He rose from lieutenant junior grade to lieutenant commander, he served in Pacific, primarily in Logistics.

Nixon was born in Yorba Linda, California, on January 9, 1913. His parents were poor, and his early life was one of hard work and study. He was a gifted student, graduating in 1934 as second in his class at Whittier College in Whittier, California, and third in his class at Duke University Law School in 1937. Unable to find a position with a Wall Street (New York City) law firm after his graduation, Nixon returned to Whittier to practice. There he met Thelma Catherine Ryan, whom he married in 1940. Nixon enlisted in the United States Navy in 1942 and served as a supply officer in the South Pacific during World War II (1939-1945). He left the service as a lieutenant commander. Back in Whittier in 1946, Nixon was persuaded by a group of southern California Republicans to challenge Democratic congressman Jerry Voorhis. Nixon campaigned vigorously, tabbed the liberal Voorhis as a dangerous left-winger, and won by 16,000 votes. In 1950 Nixon ran for the United States Senate against Congresswoman Helen Gahagan Douglas He won the election, but his campaign tactics were widely criticized. Vice President In 1952 the Republicans nominated Nixon to be the running mate of presidential candidate Dwight D. Eisenhower. As vice president, Nixon emerged as a vigorous Republican spokesman during the Eisenhower years, campaigning in a style that contrasted with Eisenhower's nonpartisan aloofness. In nonelection years, Nixon toured the country trying to bolster Republican party finances and spirit. He also developed foreign affairs credentials by visiting numerous other countries, including the Soviet Union, where an impromptu "kitchen debate" with Nikita S. Khrushchev made worldwide headlines in July 1959. As undisputed party leader at the end of Eisenhower's second term, Nixon easily won the presidential nomination in 1960. Against the articulate, wealthy, and politically well-connected John F. Kennedy, however, the Nixon edge in experience and prominence melted away. Kennedy won with a narrow popular-vote margin of 113,000 votes out of 68.8 million cast.

    Richard M. Nixon (January 9, 1913 - April 22, 1994)
On February 17, 1972, a crowd of thousands gathered on the White House lawn for a historic send-off. For Richard Milhous Nixon, the trip to Beijing would be the journey of a lifetime. He would be the first U.S. president to go to China. "He knew that for this flight," wrote Max Frankel in the New York Times , "no matter what else occurred, he would always be remembered."
Born in Yorba Linda, CA in 1913 into a working-class Quaker family, Nixon enjoyed a meteoric early political career. After a stint in the Navy in WWII, he served two consecutive terms in the U.S. House of Representatives as a Republican from California. A member of the House Un-American Activities Committee, he rose to national prominence for his role in the Alger Hiss espionage case, quickly establishing his reputation as a hard-line anti-Communist. It is no small irony that the man who accused the Truman administration of "losing" China to the Communists in 1949 would be responsible for establishing friendly relations with the People's Republic of China some 20 years later.
Elected to the U.S. Senate in 1950, Nixon was chosen by Dwight D. Eisenhower as his vice-presidential running mate. The ticket swept into office in 1952, and was re-elected four years later. As vice-president, Nixon traveled extensively and took an active interest in U.S. foreign affairs.

Other parts of the world were not neglected. In the strategically vital Middle East, Nixon established links with Egypt while maintaining the U.S. commitment to Israel. After the Yom Kippur War of 1973, the U.S. replaced the Soviet Union as the dominant influence in Egypt. NIXON, RICHARD M.
, thirty-seventh president of the United States. Nixon's youth was marked by hard work in a family store and the death of two brothers as well as by academic success. Except for Herbert Hoover, no president elected in this century grew up in more difficult circumstances. Following graduation from Whittier College (1934) and Duke University Law School (1937), he practiced law in California and married Thelma (Pat) Ryan. He served as a navy supply officer during World War II and was elected to the House of Representatives in 1946. An ambitious, intelligent, disciplined loner, Nixon cultivated no hobbies and had few close friends. His political shrewdness was often undermined by his vindictiveness and capacity for self-deception. His rise was largely the product of the post-World War II red scare. He convinced the House that Alger Hiss, a second-level New Dealer, had been a Soviet spy and, in 1950, persuaded California voters to send him to the Senate to battle against subversives and "pink" Democrats. Elected vice president in 1952, he served President Dwight D. Eisenhower dutifully for eight years, despite occasional humiliations. He tried to present himself as a statesmanlike "new Nixon," but, partly because memories of the old Nixon lingered, he lost races for president in 1960 and governor of California in 1962. The Watergate scandal was part of a broad campaign to sabotage political opposition. Although Nixon apparently had no advance knowledge of a break-in at Democratic National Committee headquarters in 1972, he subsequently obstructed an investigation of the crime. After fighting a two-year holding action, he faced impeachment by the House of Representatives and resigned on August 9, 1974. He accepted a pardon from President Gerald Ford and sank briefly into depression.

HISTORY OF U.S. INVOLVEMENT IN VIETNAM
On January 20, 1969, when Richard Nixon became the fifth U.S. President in twenty years to confront the question of American involvement in Vietnam, there were 540,000 American troops in Vietnam sent by Presidents Kennedy and Johnson, more than 325 men being held prisoners of war, and America was sharply divided over our purpose and our presence in Vietnam. Over the course of his first term, President Nixon charted a course which did not yield to the demands of a vocal, disruptive, and sometimes violent majority. With the support of the majority of the American people, he sought to conclude America's role in Vietnam without concluding America's role in the world. His leadership resulted in the signing of a peace agreement on January 27, 1973, which earned with it the hope that the people of South Vietnam might enjoy freedom and peace in the years to come.

Text Only 1974: President Nixon to resign from office Richard Nixon has announced he is stepping down as president of the United States - the first man ever to do so. He has announced his departure in the face of an imminent impeachment trial - and possible removal from office - over the Watergate affair. The president broke the news of his resignation in a television broadcast from the White House on Thursday at 2100 local time. It will take effect from noon tomorrow. Mr Nixon, 61, said initially he had believed it was his duty to complete his term of office despite the Watergate charges. "In the past days, however, it has become evident that I no longer have a strong enough political base in the Congress to justify continuing that effort," he said. "As president I must put the interests of America first." Successor Mr Nixon has been charged by the House Judiciary Committee with "high crimes and misdemeanours".

Record of Historic Richard Nixon-Zhou Enlai Talks in February 1972 Now Declassified During 21-28 February 1972, President Richard Nixon spent an extraordinary week in the People's Republic of China (PRC). The first U.S. president to visit China, Nixon was playing a central role in opening up a new political relationship with the PRC after decades of mutual estrangement. The highlight of Nixon's trip was his meeting with Communist Party Chairman Mao Zedong but its substance lay in a series of almost-daily extended conversations with Premier Zhou Enlai.
Twenty seven years after these events, the National Archives has finally declassified the Nixon-Zhou conversations in response to a mandatory declassification review request made by the National Security Archive in 1994. Once highly classified"Top Secret/Sensitive/Exclusively Eyes Only"all but three of the documents were released in their entirety. Significant excisions appear in the Nixon-Zhou discussions of Taiwan, Japan, South Asia, and the Soviet Union. Even with the excisions, these documents go well beyond the accounts of the talks that Nixon and his national security assistant Henry Kissinger provided in their memoirs.

First Inaugural Address of President Richard Milhous Nixon Monday, January 20, 1969 Senator Dirksen, Mr. Chief Justice, Mr. Vice President, President Johnson,
Vice President Humphrey, my fellow Americans-and my fellow citizens of the world community:
I ask you to share with me today the majesty of this moment. In the
orderly transfer of power, we celebrate the unity that keeps us free.
Each moment in history is a fleeting time, precious and unique. But some
stand out as moments of beginning, in which courses are set that shape
    decades or centuries.
This can be such a moment.
Forces now are converging that make possible, for the first time, the hope
that many of man's deepest aspirations can at last be realized. The
