Background
Niue is a large, raised coral island lying approximately equidistant between Samoa in the north, Tonga in the west and Rarotonga in the east. Culturally, Niue is part of West Polynesia; the people speak a language which is related to that of Tonga, and oral traditions record prehistoric interaction with Tongan peoples. However, it seems apparent that Niue does not share some of the main features of West Polynesian cultural history. The main islands of Fiji and West Polynesia (Samoa and Tonga) were settled as part of the Lapita colonisation of the south-west Pacific. About 4000 years ago these Austronesian, pottery making peoples developed a sailing and navigation technology which allowed them to move away from the large continental islands of Melanesia and venture into the remote reaches of Oceania. Slightly before 3000 years ago, after colonising all the major archipelagos from New Guinea to New Caledonia, the Lapita people moved into Fiji and West Polynesia. In West Polynesia, the eastward expansion appears to have ceased and the earliest confirmed dates from cultural layers east of Samoa date at least 1500 years later than the first arrival of Lapita in Fiji. This apparent pause in the Fiji-West Polynesia region has long puzzled archaeologists. Did Lapita simply run out of steam, or did they encounter some cultural or technological impediment to further voyaging?

Pacific museum association saddened by destruction of Niue Museum
Thursday January 22, 2004
Pacific Island museum directors are saddened by reports that Niue's National Museum and cultural centre were totally demolished by Cyclone Heta.
Speaking to PACNEWS today, Simon Poraituk, interim chairman of the Pacific Islands Museums Association (PIMA), says he was particularly saddened by the fact that nothing was saved.
Niue News today reported that the museum, which was situated at Alofi South, and all of its contents were damaged.
"All relics of the past were lost under tonnes of debris or swept out to sea," the report said. "The island's cultural centre is unrecognisable".
It is suspected that one of Niue's fast disappearing arts, traditional canoe making, which attracted dozens of young men and women every week, had its South Alofi headquarters destroyed. Master craftsman Taumafai Fuhiniu, is reportedly saddened by the destruction.
Mr Poraituk, deputy director of Papua New Guinea's National Museum and Art Gallery in Boroko, has called on the international community to help re-establish and reconstruct a new Niue Museum and Cultural Centre.
"I am very, very sad to hear of the Niue Museum destruction. When you think you have something to cling to and suddenly you find they they're (the artefacts) gone, it hits you hard," Mr Poraituk told PACNEWS. "Museums are very special buildings in the Pacific Islands and the Niue Museum was a little place that was cherished by all of us.

Moira Enetama "Niue, who is Niue? No one has ever known Niue. Who is me? No one knows me; no one has even seen my work." Al Posimani "I've been involved in art all my life. I'm a self-taught artist and I love sculpture, I do sculpture which is a very new thing in Niue, especially coming from such a small island of one-thousand-800 people. Not that many people do contemporary art in Niue." Moira Enetama "I am the only woman who knows about contemporary art, but I think there are so many young people who are talented, I have noticed that, but it's just a matter of coming out and expressing themselves." Installed in a shipping container transformed in a traditional cookhouse Tulana Mahu offers a welcoming and cosy environment. It's an intriguing collection of installations full of universal and local symbols, imported and traditional values, gently inviting the visitor to reflect on tradition and change, and which change?

Tulana Mahu (Shrine to Abundance)
I n the tradition of shrines of all cultures and religions, Tulana Mahu is a sanctum of particular ambience that is intended to project a sense of well being, gratitude and hope. This universality is combined with elements of traditional and contemporary Niue culture in order to celebrate abundance and the effect that it may have on our future. Apart from its obvious pragmatism, the shipping container is seen as the perfect symbol for the movement of food around the Pacific and is therefore analogous to the sustenance of the region and in fact to the world. The shrine is divided into two parts, the outer shrine and the inner sanctuary. At the entrance, the outer shrine reflects the cool, sterile environment of the urban freezing works which refers to the external procuration of livelihood. The inner sanctuary is created with the 'Fale Peito' (Niue cook house) in mind with its central feature the umu pit ubiquitous in the Pacific.
The usual fale peito is cluttered with implements of food production and processing as well as a variety of other miscellaneous paraphernalia and this conglomeration is expressed in a huge assortment of small art/craft work. An element of this clutter are small artworks from around the world created specifically for the shrine. These represent the counter-colonial idea that the disbursement of artwork is reversed and art from around the world is drawn toward rather than away from the country.
