Mills Family Website Irrefutable alternatives to philosophy Home Drucilla Mills Michael Mills Family and Friends [This piece was originally posted in response to a series of discussions on the Leo Strauss discussion group Has anybody else noticed an interesting similarity between two of the threads we have been pursuing lately? On the one hand we have been discussing nihilism, which (if I've understood the postings) has been presented as the permanent, irrefutable alternative to philosophy (or at any rate, to political/moral philosophy). On the other hand, we have been discussing revelation, which has also been presented as the permanent, irrefutable alternative to philosophy. Not only have these alternatives been presented as irrefutable; but from the vantage point of either, philosophy looks to be laboring under serious disadvantages:
  • From the vantage point of nihilism, the choice of philosophy as an alternative appears to be the consequence of a failure of nerve, of a kind of cowardice that refuses to face the truth of nothing. (Since philosophers pride themselves on following after the truth, this is a serious indictment.)

for science then what? Was Nietzsche an Antichrist, an atheist, a nihilist or an existentialist? Why is philosophy so attractive though it offers no undoubted truths? Are we masochists to do

Cormac McCarthy: Existential Nihilism and the Meaning of God in The Crossing
Cormac McCarthy’s second book in The Border Trilogy offers an impressive array of worldviews all competing together in the larger narrative framework of the novel. These are not only expressed through the life of the protagonist Billy Parham and his brother Boyd, but also in the narratives of the many people they encounter on their horseback journeys through the hot desert sands of Mexico. Critic Robert L. Jarrett, associate professor of English at the University of Houston-Downtown, suggests the same in Cormac McCarthy , noting that “Despite the claims of the ex-priest [in The Crossing ] that all men’s tales are one, such visions or tales are individual, highly particularized, hence the necessity for the interpolated tales, each containing a unique vision of the world” (147). He goes on to suggest that “The McCarthy novel is not only stylistically divided in its narration and in its inclusion of regional and professional dialects, but it is also divided among contradictory ideological, philosophical, and ethical visions that resist easy integration into a unified ideology by readers or critics” (Jarrett, 147). In my own reading of The Crossing The minute the word nihilism is introduced into the topic of discussion, visions of actively participating in the tearing down of creeds and the intentional destruction of all moral, philosophical, and religious values present themselves to the mind. Nihilism to many suggests chaos, anarchy, and mutiny against any and all powers that represent order. When, however, nihilism is wed with the philosophical viewpoint of the existentialist, it does not necessarily indicate any active form of destructive behavior, but rather adds to the existential position the notion that life is senseless and absurd, devoid of all meaning save that which we might supply it with our personal narratives, or little stories that help us abstract “truth” from the chaos.

Fixing Intelligence: For a More Secure America
by William E. Odom
"General Odom uses the unique insight gained from years of experience in the intelligence business to explain in plain language an issue that is critical to U.S. national security—intelligence community reform. A valuable resource to expert and novice alike, it serves both as an excellent introduction to the intelligence community, and also as a valuable guide to the current debate over how to proceed with intelligence community reform."—Senator Richard C. Bye Gregory I consider Nihilism to be a self-fulfilling philosophy. If someone addopts Nihilism, he will act in a negative way, and, because he acts negatively, people are likely to react in kind, justifying his Nihilism, at least in his own mind.
My personal reaction to Nihilism (and I realize that it's a sort of heartless way to think) is that if the world is so bleak and meaningless, nobody is keeling you here. Devalion I don't see the point of this religion. Why would you live if you believed that nothing had a purpose? big gay kirk I'd be a nihilist, but I can't see the point of it....

Nature and Nihilism
February 06, 2004 By Matthew Holbreich Let us examine his opinion of Nature: she is, stated simply, non-teleological, that is to say, there is no end of man as man, she gives no guiding light, she is indifferent in an ignominious manner, she is no judge and no standard. We therefore cannot give man a proper end to himself as defined and guided by nature. She is, quite simply, indifferent to everything. I, Ideas are more powerful than iron; they are the foundations of our lives. They must not only be taken seriously, but also with regards to the ends, that is to say, responsibly. I do not believe the two can be separated. This essay can be easily critiqued, and I hope there are those who will do so. Matthew Holbreich, LA Reader Comments Post a comment Name:

A work that makes you slap your head and yell "YES!" I was introduced to this text in a class taught by Richard Rorty from whom James Edwards draws much of his discourse. The book was almost revelatory in its effect on me. It eloquently (though sometimes difficultly) expressed feelings and thoughts I'd had my entire life but could never fully express. He writes to "End of Century Western Intellectuals" which refers to all those who have intuitvely searched for some sort of "meaning" or "truth" but who have likely found most ostensible sources of such meaning to be hollow and weak. You will not find truth here either but you might find the explanation as to why that might be OK. My obdurate hankering for the ineffable is gone !
