Is really the philosophy of Nagarjuna kind of ontological nihilism? What is the actual meaning of Shunyavada? Thank you, Bimal Back to top Plamen Joined: Jan 11, 2004 Posts: 5 Posted: Fri Feb 06, 2004 6:48 pm Post subject: Methodological nihilism of Nagarjuna Bimal, hi! If ontological nihilism means that all being is subject to destruction, then the entire Buddhist doctrine is ontological nihilism as far as there is nothing permanent in the world, with all those momentary dharmas which appear only to disappear. This, however, does not seem to be the position of Nagarjuna as he has fought the conception of arising showing that all alternative views under which we can speak about arising are leading to absurds, and hence, prasangat, must be forsaken. There being no arising how could there be place for destruction?! In this sense, the philosophical methodology of Nagarjuna is not ontologically nihilistic, because nihilists are those who at least recognise that there is something that exists. Nagarjuna does not recognise the existence of anything.

Yes and no. A sympathetic reader will find a good deal of material in the diverse essays collected here that helps to substantiate the accusations, but it falls well short of a clearly developed case for the prosecution. A more skeptical reader may wonder whether the incidents and tendencies cited add up to anything more sinister than insensitivity and narrow-mindedness on the part of certain individuals and departments. www.blackwellpublishers.co.uk/gourmet) Lingua Franca prepared its generally excellent Real Guide to Grad School Some or all of these charges may be true, but they do not add up to a very clear definition of analytic philosophy and how it differs from the alternatives. For that one could do worse than excerpt a paragraph or two from the reviled Leiter report, which in its 2000-2001 edition attempted to explain and justify its avowed preference for analytic philosophy: This is by no means a neutral account of the distinction, but it is not far from the mark. Leiter goes on to make a number of remarks, many of them disparaging, about the quality of philosophical thought and writing of those who label themselves Continental philosophers, but he also directs at his own camp some of the same charges that Wilshire lodges.

Virtuism, Nihilism and the Terrorization of the Individual
Virtuism also believes in aspects of the "teachings of Neitzsche" but these are ideas that didn't begin with him. If a Virtuist is also a Christian or has strong faith in God it doesn't mean that he is "like other Christians" or like others who have faith in God. I don't know how such an analysis of such as Neitzsche's can pertain to people like Pascal, Darwin, Martin Luther King, Jr., or Einstein, all of whom had a faith in God. Nietzsche's is probably the philosophy that has had the most wrong with it in modern philosophy, and luckily already the most legitimate criticisms against it. Witness the criticism of Camus. What has to be explored is the many philosphies of the modern, knowing what many modern minds think. This becomes a philosophy of understanding the philosophy of people. Somehow it is a popular notion that theists or Christians are close minded. But what has changed in the last two hundred years? Wasn't it simply a public-relations campaign on the part of Nietzche, of Lenin and Stalin? And what is the result of what these people put in its place? It is very interesting to see how old many philosophical statements are. In 1751, Hume said, "Moral Judgement is essentially a matter or sentiment, not reason." Virtuism unites the realm of the beautiful with the realm of something one may want to call a moral judgement. But it is inherently not a statement about sentimentality or the "metaphysics of morality" but about sociology, law, anthropology, psychology and aesthetics. Isn't anthropology the discipline which most often has a respect for man's need for deity? Isn't sociology and psychology good benchmarks for the analysis of the effects of a philosophy on an individual or society? And can not aesthetics be shown to display what belief in God can do to the artist? Look at the wholistic beauty that theistic painters showed in their works from the Pre-Raphealites school back to the original pre-Raphealites. Yet these areas still needed significant breakthroughs in 1751.

By J. Budziszewski, Ph.D., Associate Professor, Government and Philosophy, University of Texas at Austin
Dr. Jay Budziszewski, a defender of the natural-law tradition, is the author of several books including Written on the Heart, The Resurrection of Nature, The Nearest Coast of Darkness and True Tolerance. Sixteen years ago I stood in the Government Department of the University of Texas to give a talk. I was fresh out of graduate school, and it was my here's-why-you-should-hire-me lecture. I wanted to teach about ethics and politics, so as academic job seekers do everywhere, I was showing the faculty my stuff. So what did I tell them? Two things. The first was that we human beings just make up the difference between good and evil; the second was that we aren't responsible for what we do anyway. And I laid out a ten-year plan for rebuilding ethical and political theory on these two propositions.

    #9: Nihilism
The 20th century is one of wars and dictatorships. It opened with the First World War, during which Communist dictatorship appeared on the European fringe in Russia, and following which Fascist and Nazi dictatorships arose in the heart of Europe. Then came the Second World War and the Cold War. Communist dictatorship spread to Asia, Africa and the Americas (Cuba). Even areas which hadn't arrived at dictatorship were well along the road. They suffered continuous erosion of citizens' rights. We must learn why! We must know the cause to find a cure. History is a record of human actions, and human actions are guided by ideas, so we must seek the cause in the realm of ideas. The catastrophe is global so we must look for ideas with a global reach. Dictators were installed, and launched their wars, to the approval of millions. Fascism was applauded for making "the trains run on time." Hitler was "just what Germany needed." A Canadian Prime Minister cozied up to the world record-holder for mass murder, Chairman Mao. The Soviet dictatorship had the warm approval of the free world's cultural establishment, up to the moment of its collapse. So we must search among ideas which govern approval and disapproval— moral ideas.

The term nihilism (from the Latin nihil, meaning "not anything") was popularized by the Russian novelist Ivan Turgenev in his novel Fathers and Sons ), to describe the views of an emerging radical Russian intelligentsia . These consisted primarily of upper-class students who had grown disillusioned with the slow pace of reformism . The primary spokesman for this new philosophy was D. I. Pisarev ) who articulated a program of Revolutionary Utilitarianism and advocated violence as a tool for social change. Pisarev was cast as Bazarov in Fathers and Sons much to his own delight; he proudly embraced his new status as a fictional hero and villain. The word quickly became a catch-all term of derision for younger, more radical generations, and continues in this vein to modern times. It is often used to indicate a group or philosophy the speaker intends to characterize as having no moral sensibility, no belief in truth beauty love , or whatever else the speaker and his presumed audience values, and no regard for the current social conventions Table of contents showTocToggle("show","hide")

As philosopher and poet Nietzsche's work is not easily conformable to the
traditional schools of thought within philosophy. However, an unmistakable
concern with the role of religion and values penetrates much of his work.
Contrary to the tradition before him, Nietzsche launches vicious diatribes against Christianity and the dualistic philosophies he finds essentially life denying. Despite his early tutelage under the influence of Schopenhauer's philosophy, Nietzsche later philosophy indicates a refusal to cast existence as embroiled in pessimism but, instead, as that which should be affirmed, even in the face of bad fortune. This essay will study in further detail Nietzsche view of Schopenhauer and Christianity as essentially nihilistic. Nihilism Throughout his work Nietzsche makes extensive use of the term “nihilism”.
