Section 3: Capsule history (post-1960)
At independence on October 1, 1960, Nigeria remained an uneasy federation of distinct regions. The "political class" of each region used its authority to harass opponents and to pursue its own interests. At the federal level, the Northern People's Congress, led by northern region premier Ahmadu Bello and federal prime minister Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, was the leading force in a coalition with the NCNC, while the AG was excluded from power. After openly corrupt elections in 1964, the NCNC was also excluded from national power. The gap between the rich and the poor widened, and protests mounted. In January 1966, middle-ranking members of the Nigerian military staged an attempted coup. This was suppressed by federal troops, but resulted in the installation of a military junta, led by Igbo officers. Regional animosities flared, prompting massacres of Igbo-speakers living in the north. The following year, eastern leaders responded by declaring a separate Republic of Biafra, igniting a three-year civil war. Despite intense ethnic polarization and perhaps as many as one million killed during the war, the winning federal government followed a policy of non-retribution. Subsequent division of Nigeria into smaller states produced larger representation for ethnic groups other than the big three.

GUIDE TO SOURCES OF NIGERIAN HISTORY AT THE NATIONAL ARCHIVES OF NIGERIA, ENUGU BRANCH BY
U. O. A. ESSE
NATIONAL ARCHIVES OF NIGERIA
CONTENTS
Preface Introduction: The National Archives Enugu Part One: Public and Private Records Part Two: Printed Annual Progress Reports and Related Materials
PREFACE The Guide to the Records at the National Archives, Enugu is the first Guide to be compiled by any of the branch office making up the National Archives of Nigeria. It is our contribution to the compilation of the national Guide. I have to stress at this juncture that this Guide does not contain all the records available in the Enugu Repository. Records which have not been arranged and described are exclude from volume. Apart from the unprocessed records other categories of records which do not appear in this volume include cartographic materials and other forms of non-conventional records. It is hoped that these of records will be included in the second volume. This Guide is designed to introduce searchers, far and near, to the large mass of invaluable public records available in the repositories of the Enugu Archives. Every attempt was made to include all available sources but it is possible that some source must have been over looked. The most substantial part of the materials in this Guide is found among the Government records. They include general correspondence, reports, memoranda, sessional papers and hansards. The justification for the inclusion of the newspapers is the recent realisation that newspapers are also invaluable source of materials for research.

Conflict and Peace in Mountain Societies
Case Study
Conflict - Mandara Mountains, Cameroon and Nigeria
by Judy Sterner, Ph.D.,

Critical features of the Mandara Mountains of northeastern Nigeria and North Cameroon: low altitude (highest peak c. 1400 m), many ethnic/linguistic groups (50 or more), high population density (30-200 people per square kilometre), extensively terraced, colonial history (colonized by Germans, then partitioned between the British and the French), pre-colonial history (conflict between plains dwelling Islamic states and non-Islamic ethnic groups of the mountains), international border (Cameroon/Nigeria). 4. If your mountains currently enjoy peace, was there ever a time when they were in strife? How was this conflict eventually resolved? The colonial period (early 1900s to 1960) added to the conflict. The Germans provided Fulani warlords with guns. A German officer with African troops took refuge in the far north of the mountains and held out against British and French troops for more than a year. All three colonial powers used Fulani and other traditional enemies of the montagnards to collect taxes. Resistance to taxation by montagnards during the 1930s, a period of extreme drought and locust infestations, resulted in being references to 'truculent hill pagans', entire villages being burned, arrests, and attempts to resettle them on the plains. A period of 'taming' or pacification led up to independence. Both the Cameroonian and Nigerian governments have also tried bring the montagnards down to the plains.

Archaeologists find clues to Queen of Sheba in Nigeria, Find May Rival Egypts's Pyramids
From Nigeria News
4 June 1999
BRITISH scientists have unearthed in Nigeria's rain forest a suspected centre of one of Africa's greatest kingdoms and possible burial place of the legendary Queen of Sheba - pushing the country to the fore of ancient history. Hidden in the forest of the old Ijebu Kingdom, a few hours drive from Lagos, are the Eredo earthworks reputedly larger than the famous great pyramids of Egypt. The teamof scientists from Bournemouth University, working with archaeologist Dr. Patrick Darling, have concluded a preliminary survey of the earthworks, comprising a wall and ditch measuring 14 metres high and about 160 kilometres long.Builders of the earthworks had shifted an estimated 3.5m cubic metres of earth to build the ramparts - one million cubic metres more than the amount of rock and earth which went into building the Greta Pyramid of Cheops in Egypt. The ramparts marked out what is believed to be the boundary of the original Ijebu Kingdom ruled by the Awujale. Civil wars and the arrival of the British eventually broke the kingdom's centuries-old Lagos lagoon trade monopoly. Darling described the Eredo site as a breathtaking find, with many of its remains relatively intact, although overgrown by the rain forest.

Progress Toward Poliomyelitis Eradication Nigeria, 1996-1998
In 1988, the World Health Assembly resolved to eradicate poliomyelitis globally by 2000 (1). In the African Region of the World Health Organization (WHO), eradication efforts were accelerated following supporting resolutions by WHO's Regional Committee for Africa in 1995 (2,3) and the Organization of African Unity in 1996 (4). Nigeria, the most populous country in Africa and part of a densely populated West African area extending from Nigeria to Cote D'Ivoire, is critically important to the global polio eradication initiative. This report summarizes 1) the success of National Immunization Days (NIDs) *; 2) the establishment of acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) surveillance; and 3) accelerated efforts to meet the 2000 target, including mopping-up ** planned for later in 1999. Routine Vaccination Coverage During 1994-1997, reported routine vaccination coverage with three doses of oral poliovirus vaccine (OPV) among infants aged less than 1 year nationwide remained at low levels: 34% in 1994, 29% in 1995, 21% in 1996, and 25% in 1997. These suboptimal coverage rates varied substantially by state within Nigeria. National Immunization Days In 1996, Nigeria initiated NIDs, and reported nationwide OPV coverage was 47% after the first round in November and 75% after the second round in December (5). In 1997, nationwide coverage was 76% following the first round of NIDs and 94% after the second round (6). Nationwide coverage of the third NIDs was 100% in the first round in November 1998 and 108% in the second round in December 1998 ***. In 1998, reported coverage during round one ranged from 63% in Imo State to 147% in Katsina State.

NIGERIAN ELECTIONS
Critical Analysis
By Lara Maupin, a social studies teacher at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in Alexandria, Virginia Overview:
Nigeria is Africa's most populous nation - one-fifth of all Africans are Nigerian. Nigeria is also the world's eighth largest oil producer, although the majority of Nigerians remain poor. Stability in Nigeria is important not only for humanitarian reasons but for the overall stability of West Africa. Nigeria is especially important to the United States since it is its fifth largest supplier of oil and after 9/11 the U.S. has tried to reduce its reliance on oil from the Mideast. For most of its 40 year history, Nigeria has been ruled by the military. This will be the first civilian-run election in Nigeria in over 20 years.
Thus, it is important to examine the recent elections in Nigeria and understand the development of democracy there. In this 45-50 minute lesson, your high school students will examine the troubled history of Nigeria, the recent elections, and the challenges facing emergent democracies in developing regions of the world. This lesson is especially relevant in a world history or comparative government class but may be used in any social studies class in which African studies or current events are examined. You may extend your study of Nigeria and Africa with one of the suggested activities given below.
