    Mon Apr 12 2004
Coalition parties and other groups planning a "mass action" against the Federal Government on Monday next week, to coincide with the first anniversary of last year's presidential election, have been urged to thread softly.
The Conference of Nigerian Political Parties (CNPP) is at the vanguard of the planned protest, billed to hold across the country. It has reportedly received the nod of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), the Ohanaeze Ndigbo and the Afenifere. The "mass action" is planned to draw attention to the opposition parties' claim of gross malpractice at last year's election and the ethnic groups' claim of worsening standards of Nigerians' living conditions. But the Special Assistant to the President on Public Affairs, Mr. Femi Fani-Kayode, last night urged the planners of the protests to explore peaceful and legal options. In an interview with The Guardian, he urged the protesters to note that the allegation of electoral malpractice is before the judiciary. Fani-Kayode wondered why the parties were planning to circumvent the judiciary if they knew that they had a case.
