There are hundreds of country links and they are variable in quality. Some are good for Geography, others also provide political, historical, sociological data and information. Many of the embassy links cater for travellers only, but a few provide a much wider range of useful information. Some have special education links - the Brazilian Embassy is one of the best!
An excellent general site to start with is the CIA Factbook which has lots of up-to-date information on every country - but beware of printing it all out without checking how many pages there are - some countries have a lot of information!

Historical geography of nigeria. A Basic Chronology for nigeria’s Historical geography. Web Resources on the Historical geography of nigeria (general).
http://www.uni.edu/gai/Nigeria/Background/Standard17.html
NIGERIA BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Standard 17 Historical Geography of Nigeria A Basic Chronology for Nigeria’s Historical Geography It is not possible to speak of "Nigeria’s" historical geography before the year 1914. Before this date, there was no territorial entity known as Nigeria. Despite this obvious problem, this section addresses the historical geography of the region that became Nigeria in the twentieth century. As the opening sentence suggests, great emphasis will be placed on the period of British colonial rule. Before this, however, it is instructive to take a brief chronological look at Nigerian history, emphasizing those events and developments that affected the region’s geography. The following chronology provides a brief sketch of this history.
  • Ca. 2,000 BC: Agriculture is developed in the Niger River Valley 200 BC: The height of Nok culture (central Nigeria) 100 AD: Beginnings of Bantu migration. 400 AD: Urban area of Jenne-Jeno established in southwest Nigeria 600-700: Muslims conquer North Africa c. 1200: Beginning of the Hausa city-states

GEOG 4293/5293, Physical Hydrology

Dr. Aondover Tarhule joined the Department in 1999 following a one-year postdoctoral fellowship at Queens University, Kingston, Ontario, Canada. His expertise is in physical hydrology (specifically the analysis of extreme events such as floods and droughts). His research interests include hydro-climatic reconstruction and rural water issues particularly in the Sahel Savanna zone of West Africa. Dr. Tarhule applies geo-electric techniques to investigate various water issues in shallow alluvial aquifers. An on-going project is exploring the feasibility of using tree-ring analysis to reconstruct floods and droughts in the Sahel.

    Nigeria: Overview
COUNTRY DESCRIPTION: Nigeria is a developing West African country that has experienced periods of political instability. Its internal infrastructure is neither fully functional nor well maintained. The inauguration of President Olusegun Obasanjo on May 29, 1999 marked the return of civilian rule after sixteen years of military governments.
ENTRY/EXIT REQUIREMENTS: A passport and visa are required. The visa costs forty-five US dollars and must be obtained in advance. Promises of entry into Nigeria without a visa are credible indicators of fraudulent commercial schemes in which the perpetrators seek to exploit the foreign traveler's illegal presence in Nigeria through threats of extortion or bodily harm. U.S. citizens cannot legally depart Nigeria unless they can prove, by presenting their entry visas, that they entered Nigeria legally. Entry information may be obtained at the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 2201 M Street, N.W., in Washington, D.C. 20037, telephone (202) 822-1500, or at the Nigerian Consulate General in New York, telephone (212) 850-2200. Overseas inquiries may be made at the nearest Nigerian Embassy or Consulate.
REGISTRATION/EMBASSY LOCATION: U.S. citizens are encouraged to register at the U.S. Embassy and to obtain updated information on travel and security in Nigeria. The U.S. Embassy is located at 2 Walter Carrington Crescent, Victoria Island in Lagos. The telephone number is [234](1) 261-0050. The Internet address for the consular section in Lagos is: http://lagoscons@lagossf.us-state.gov. The Embassy Office in the new capital city of Abuja is located at 9 Mambilla, Maitama District. The telephone number is [234](9) 523-0916.

By the mid-1980s overreliance on oil had brought Nigeria close to bankruptcy. A military regime came to power, intent on liberalizing the economy and eliminating corruption. President Ibrahim Babangida promised a return to civilian rule, but the 1993 elections were annulled and he was forced to resign. The military continues in control, and the dream of democracy remains elusive. The nation's capital moved from Lagos to Abuja in 1991.
