The African Research Association (ARA) managing Development in Nigeria (DIN) has been tackling forest degradation in the tropical forests of Cross River State, Nigeria since 1996. The ARA works through its rural based community action project, Development in Nigeria (DIN). Research by DIN in rural communities over the years has repeatedly highlighted a correlation between poverty and forest degradation where rural undertaking research. Their research objectives are three-fold; to facilitate participatory learning and action leading to sustained community benefits, to record and preserve indigenous knowledge through ethno-botanical inventories and to monitor and document deforestation in Cross River State, particularly in the north. The Nigerian Field Society is an organisation devoted to the study of all aspects of culture and environmental sciences in Nigeria, embracing interests in the fauna and flora, history, archaeology and geology, legends and customs, arts and crafts, sports and pastimes. The Society is actively engaged in promoting conservation and preservation at scientific and popular levels, and in encouraging tourism in Nigeria. It publishes a journal twice a year 'The Nigerian Field' which has appeared regularly since 1931 containing articles on the above topics covering all of West Africa. The Status of Human Rights Organizations in Sub-Saharan Africa
Nigeria
CONTEXT Although human rights violations in Nigeria have been commonplace under military rule, 1993 was a particularly challenging year for Nigerian human rights groups. Former President General Ibrahim Babangida annulled the results of a presidential election, which would have brought the country back to civilian rule, and installed an interim government. In mid-November, Defense Minister General Sani Abacha forced the interim government to resign, effectively staging the seventh coup d'etat since Nigeria's independence. The regime banned all political meetings and associations. No timetable was set for the return to civilian rule. Throughout this crisis, the human rights community has banded together under a coalition called the Campaign for Democracy (CD). Riots erupted in Lagos in early July 1993 and the regime detained hundreds of protesters for a month. CD called for additional strikes and demonstrations. Human rights abuses during this time were widespread, including ethnically-based attacks, killing of demonstrators, detentions of activists and journalists, and interference with freedom of expression and association. The Nigerian press, known for being outspoken, came under even more fire from government authorities during the political crisis. The government closed down several magazine houses. Abuses by members of the police and security forces remain a persistent human rights problem. There are frequent cases of harassment and extra-judicial killings by law enforcement officers. Abysmal prison conditions have also been highlighted by the human rights community.

CULTURAL CHANGE EXPERT JOEL FREEMAN VISITS NIGERIA

SEVERN, MARYLAND  (ANS) Recently Joel Freeman, president of The Freeman Institute, an organizational culture change firm based in Severn, Maryland, spent a week in Nigeria (December 11-18, 2001) and spent time with William Kumuyi, pastor of the largest churches in Africa (and the third largest in the world).
Conservative estimates place it at over 120,000 members, with well over 1500 affiliate churches throughout Africa and the rest of the world, Freeman told ASSIST News Service (ANS).
"I was overwhelmed by the gentle, gracious hospitality. I spoke at one of the three camps that they have every year," said Freeman.
"This particular camp had well over 40,000 (and they have many more who don't register). I can hardly begin to explain what I experienced. I was moved by the simplicity of faith and humility displayed by everyone I met. When I got home, I asked (my wife) Shirley to knock me on the side of the head if I ever start to complain about anything! RELATED Miss World 2002 ABUJA, Nigeria The finals of the annual Miss World contest are being held for the first time in their history in Africa. Nigeria is hosting the event which purports to select the "most beautiful woman in the world" from among its nearly 100 contestants. CNN's Jeff Koinange reports that while individual contestants are receiving a warm welcome in Nigeria, the contest itself has encountered some rough going. The annual pageant, which draws a global TV audience of over two billion viewers is already causing controversy even before it has begun. The timing of the event on December 7, so close to Islam's holiest month, has rubbed some people the wrong way. Aisha Mohammed, of the Federation of Nigerian Muslim Women Association of Nigeria, said: "I'm personally against women showing that they are so beautiful. "It's not an achievement, it's something that God endows on who he wants to so for women to say, 'oh look at me I'm so beautiful,' I think is unimportant."

Nigeria: Overview
COUNTRY DESCRIPTION: Nigeria is a developing West African country that has experienced periods of political instability. Its internal infrastructure is neither fully functional nor well maintained. The inauguration of President Olusegun Obasanjo on May 29, 1999 marked the return of civilian rule after sixteen years of military governments.
ENTRY/EXIT REQUIREMENTS: A passport and visa are required. The visa costs forty-five US dollars and must be obtained in advance. Promises of entry into Nigeria without a visa are credible indicators of fraudulent commercial schemes in which the perpetrators seek to exploit the foreign traveler's illegal presence in Nigeria through threats of extortion or bodily harm. U.S. citizens cannot legally depart Nigeria unless they can prove, by presenting their entry visas, that they entered Nigeria legally. Entry information may be obtained at the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 2201 M Street, N.W., in Washington, D.C. 20037, telephone (202) 822-1500, or at the Nigerian Consulate General in New York, telephone (212) 850-2200. Overseas inquiries may be made at the nearest Nigerian Embassy or Consulate.
REGISTRATION/EMBASSY LOCATION: U.S. citizens are encouraged to register at the U.S. Embassy and to obtain updated information on travel and security in Nigeria. The U.S. Embassy is located at 2 Walter Carrington Crescent, Victoria Island in Lagos. The telephone number is [234](1) 261-0050. The Internet address for the consular section in Lagos is: http://lagoscons@lagossf.us-state.gov. The Embassy Office in the new capital city of Abuja is located at 9 Mambilla, Maitama District. The telephone number is [234](9) 523-0916.

My name is Chinelo, and I started learning the Igbo language in the winter of 1996/1997 when I was a senior in high school. I liked it so much that I decided to create a page on the language and my heritage. The rest is history (or to be PC, herstory). For those who have been here before...same mission statement. But soon the page will be completely updated (as I always say...but I really do have a creative idea for this...you'll just have to wait for that). I had been really busy with work and life and haven't had time to add new information and honor people's requests for specific topics. But it should coming, um, soon probably...yeah. In the mean time, I added an update page to keep you current on what's going on with the page. Regarding specific information requests...I will try to find out information on inquiries made in guest book entrees, so please be patient. I do try to find out information on every request (well, if it interests me, but I'm a student so you'd have to try really hard to find something that I wasn't interested in), so if you do have one, please sign the guest book.

77. FOCUS ON CULTURE AND TOURISM  EXECUTIVE SUMMARY  Nigeria
nigeria’s contribution to the World of culture and Arts by her election into the Prestigious World Heritage Committee to take care of African interest.
http://www.nigeria.gov.ng/DEMOCRACY/chapter5/cultureandtourism.htm
FOCUS ON CULTURE AND TOURISM
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Nigeria’s cultural diplomacy has progressed by lips and bounds since the enthronement of this democratic dispensation in May 1999. Highlights on the culture and Tourism sub-sector are below:
Ø Protocol agreement and Memorandum of Understanding with Trinidad and Tobago, Equatorial Guinea, Brazil and several other countries
Ø Carribean Expo, London 2001
Ø World Tourism Organisation, Morocco 2001
Ø International Tourism Borse (Exchange) ITB Berlin 2001
Ø Exhibition of works on fostering partnership between the Executive and the Legislature for sustainable democracy.
Prior to the take off of the present democratic dispensation, Nigeria’s cultural diplomacy had been at its lowest ebb having suffered the same fate with other aspects of her national life. However, with the restructuring of the Culture and Tourism sub-sector of the Nigerian economy as a separate Ministry in 1999, accelerated growth in both the identification and development of the sector’s diverse resources and potentials has begun to be witnessed.
The nation’s Cultural sector has been quite active for the period under consideration. Not only has the Domestic Cultural Operation department finalized research activities of the first stage of the Cultural Calendar which will reflect our Cultural Festivals, places of interest, sites, museums and monuments in the country; it also packaged an exhibition of art works at the just concluded International seminar on fostering partnership between the Executive and the Legislature for sustainable democracy.

Some see Osama Bin Laden as a hero
A Nigerian woman has fled home with her new-born baby because her husband decided to name their son Osama Bin Laden. The unnamed woman, from Calabar in Cross River state, has decided to seek a divorce unless her husband changes his mind about their son's name, reports the Vanguard newspaper.
This comes as reports from mainly Muslim northern Nigeria say that there has been a massive increase in the number of baby boys called Osama - after Bin Laden. In one hospital in Kano, where there were celebrations after the 11 September attacks, seven out of 10 babies are said to be being given the name Osama. The Calabar woman is a Christian and her husband is a Muslim. But the BBC's Sola Odunfa in Lagos says that religion has little to do with this marital discord - it has more to do with Nigerian traditional beliefs in the influence a name has over a person's character. No ceremony The woman said: "Osama Bin Laden is a criminal with an inclination towards shedding innocent blood."
