Focus on Africa

Sample text from the Online World Monitor newsletter
ISSN: 0805-6315. December . (C) by Odd de Presno, Norway. Links are not maintained! Check the handbook for current links. Earlier this month, I visited Lagos, Nigeria. Getting in and out was a bad experience. The Murtala Muhammad Airport's customs people asked for bribes, and some in an aggressive way. The amount requested seemed to increase by the number of stars on the uniform. I paid some of them off to avoid more hassle.
Then they discovered my laptop computer! Five of them jumped on me. " You must pay US$200.00! You can reclaim the money when you leave. " A lie. We later discovered that they had given me a receipt for VAT on the amount. Worthless. . . . Beware!
I had checked up on the country before leaving, so I knew that there were problems ahead. Still, my negotiating position was weak.
Background information on all African countries is available in the CIA World Factbook. The Online World resources handbook explains where to find it, but you may find it easier to search the book using a Web browser.

One of the largest and wealthiest territories in Africa with a population of 80 million. Though oil is now the principle export, the economy is mainly an agricultural one with groundnuts grown in the north and cocoa and oil palm products in the more southern and coastal areas. The country is trisected by the Niger River and its tributary, the Benue. The north, mainly dry savannah country, is predominantly Islam. The Hausa and Fulani tribes, organised into emirates, populate it. The south-west region has a high rainfall and much of its forest or lately forest is occupied by the Yoruba. The south-west where much of the coastal belt consists of mangrove swamps with river channels, is inhabited predominantly by the Ibo, an ethnically and linguistically related group of peoples. An indigenous culture developed at an early date in Nigeria. Terracottas discovered at Nok have been dated to the 5th century BC. Bronzes from Igbo Ukwu date from the 9th century CE. The city life in Yoruba territory is known to have existed in 800 CE. From the 11th to the 14th centuries it was producing naturalistic figures in bronze of a quality often compared with naturalistic traditions of the classical Mediterranean. It was from Ife that the court of Benin learned the art of

http://nigerianembassy-argentina.org/nigeria/xculture.shtml
CULTURE
Culture is the way of life of a people. In Nigeria, culture is Art. It is religion, it is tradition, it is environment, it is life itself. Art in Nigeria dates back to over 2,000 years and in the archaeological discoveries that depicted the works of the people, the culture of the various peoples of Nigeria are also illustrated.
Nok Culture
The Nok culture was also discovered through archaeological finds. It is considered the earliest cuilture that emerged in Nigeria. The name Nok came from the site in which it was first discovered, but it seems to have fairly widespread in the region north of the Benue. The characteristic features of the Nok culture which flourished from 500 BC to AD 200 are the terracota figurines associated with it and the extensive use of iron. The source of the knowledge of an iron technology has been atributed to the civilisation of b"Meroe" in what is today the Republic of Sudan, as well as to Carthage in North Africa.

Fundamentalism’s Toll on Nigerian Music
'Shariahphrenia' Reigns in Northern Nigeria
Jean-Christophe Servant
Kano, Nigeria
Nov. 18, 2002 Members of the Zamfara State Vigilante Group, a group dedicated to enforcing Shariah law, stand in front their headquarters building in Gusau, the capital of the northern Nigerian state (Photo: Ivan Watson/AFP). There’s a little book you can find in open-air markets of Africa titled, Who Are the Sinful Women, According to the Quran and Hadith . It contains this thought: “Music and dancing have been found to be a great stimulant of carnal sex, a stepping stone to fornication and adultery. It is therefore essential that every Muslim man and woman take utmost care to reclaim and preserve himself or herself from this.” In the continent that invented rhythm, the passage could seem amusing, like much of the mystical literature that, stemming from every kind of religious tradition, fills the market stalls of Africa. Amusing except that there’s something special about this book. Published in the Nigerian city of Ilorin, the book was purchased at a market in Kano, the metropolis of northern Nigeria and the informal capital of the 12 Nigerian states that have adopted a puritanical version of Shariah law over the past three years—and, in so doing, have threatened the secular identity and constitution of sub-Saharan Africa’s most populous country.

An African nation will host the 2010 World Cup. But though the prospect excites the fans in the countries competing to host the competition, they also know that money and infrastructure will probably count more than football culture and previous success on the field in putting forward the winning bid.
As Africa's most populous nation, it is understandable that Nigeria have been the major exporter of footballing talent from Africa to all corners of the globe. At last count, there were more than 250 Nigerian footballers playing professionally around the world, some of them superstars in the major leagues of Europe, others barely eking out a living.
Now Nigeria wants the world to come to it, specifically in 2010 when the World Cup finals are hosted in Africa for the first time.
As one of Africa's superpowers, Nigeria more than holds it own among the six candidates who are in the race, but they will soon find out that sheer size and international prestige counts for little when the decision is finally taken.
Egypt, Libya, Morocco, South Africa and Tunisia are the five other countries who have also announced their intention to bid, although the whole process is still in its early stages.
