    THE DEMOGRAPHIC TRANSITION
    Keith Montgomery

    Department of Geography and Geology
The "Demographic Transition" is a model that describes population change over time. It is based on an interpretation begun in 1929 by the American demographer Warren Thompson, of the observed changes, or transitions , in birth and death rates in industrialized societies over the past two hundred years or so. By "model" we mean that it is an idealized, composite picture of population change in these countries. The model is a generalization that applies to these countries as a group and may not accurately describe all individual cases. Whether or not it applies to less developed societies today remains to be seen. Before proceeding you should review some demographic terminology or be sure to follow the links given below as the terms arise The model is illustrated below: As shown, there are four stages of transition. They will be described first in terms of a typical fully developed country today, such as The United States or Canada, the countries of Europe, or similar societies elsewhere (e.g. Japan, Australia etc.). STAGE ONE is associated with pre Modern times, and is characterized by a balance between

    Background:
Not until 1993, 33 years after independence from France, did Niger hold its first free and open elections. A 1995 peace accord ended a five-year Tuareg insurgency in the north. Coups in 1996 and 1999 were followed by the creation of a National Reconciliation Council that effected a transition to civilian rule in December 1999.

Currency: Naira = 100 Kobo Nigeria is one of the largest countries in Africa. It lies wholly within the tropics along the Gulf of Guinea, on the west coast of Africa. It is bounded on the west by the Republic of Benin, on the north by the Republic of Niger and on the east by the Republic of Cameroon and on the south by the Atlantic Ocean. A land of lush vibrant vegetation and rolling velds, its climate varies from tropical at the coast to sub-tropical further in land. Sandy beaches stretch along most of the country's 800 kilometre coast-line which is intersected by the great Niger Delta and by intricate network of creeks and rivers, The sandy beaches are backed by a belt of mangrove swamps, Beyond that, there is a zone of tropical forest, then the country becomes more open and park-like with some hilly ranges. Further inland it develops into a low-level plateau with hills of granite and sand-stone at a general elevation of 610 metres and rising to a central plateau along parts of the eastern frontier to 1,830 metres. The northern borders stretch out towards the Sahara desert, lying well outside the limits of the rain forest. The diversified geographical regions with the almost inexhaustible variety they provide, make Nigeria a highly interesting place.

    Geography
Nigeria is situated in the West African region and lies between longitudes 3 degrees and 14 degrees and latitudes 4 degrees and 14 degrees. It has a land mass of 923,768 sq.km. It is bordered to the north by the Republics of Niger and Tchad; it shares borders to the west with the Republic of Benin, while the Republic of Cameroun shares the eastern borders right down to the shores of the Atlantic Ocean which forms the southern limits of Nigerian Territory. The 800km of coastline confers on the country the potentials of a maritime power. Land is in abundance in Nigeria for agricultural, industrial and commercial activities.
At its widest, Nigeria measures about 1,200 km from east to west and about 1,050 km from north to south. The country’s topography ranges from lowlands along the coast and in the lower Niger Valley to high plateaus in the north and mountains along the eastern border. Much of the country is laced with productive rivers. Nigeria's ecology varies from tropical forest in the south to dry savanna in the far north, yielding a diverse mix of plant and animal life.

The CCC sanctuary is located in the Parc National du Haut Niger (Park) located approximately 450 km from Conakry, the capital city, in Guinea. The European Union funds the 54,000-hectare park, but the Guinean government owns the land.
    Geography
Guinea has four zones: a narrow coastal plain; the Fouta Djalon Plateau; the northeastern, dry lowlands; and the forests in the southeast. At over 1.5 km, the Fouta Djalon Plateau is the source of the Gambia and Senagal rivers, and much of the Niger. Southeastern Guinea is hilly and heavily vegetated. Due to fires and cultivation however, little virgin rainforest remains. Click the Africa icon to the right for a map of Guinea.
    Climate
Guinea is one of the wettest countries in West Africa. Rainfall at the coast averages 4.3 meters per year (half of which falls in July and August) while the central mountainous region receives about 2.2 meters. Temperatures average 30 degrees C along the coast, are slightly cooler inland, and can fall below 10 degrees C in the higher elevations.
Two of the major environmental concerns in Guinea are deforestation and the bushmeat trade. Although environmental exploitation has been mostly small-scale due to limited mechanization, it has increased recently due to the improved road system.

2 days [ESOL/Special Education: This is a good multisensory activity with high interest and participation.] Pre-activity (student)
Students will read in their text a description of the geography of Africa. Pre-activity (teacher)
The teacher will prepare handouts and provide books and atlases as available to be used in the lesson. The teacher will review the information to be presented to students. The teacher will create heterogeneous student groups for the guided practice part of the activity. Day 1 Anticipatory Set:
  • The students will be given questions to respond to in their class notes. (10 min.)
  • List three descriptive words to describe a desert?
  • Are all deserts the same? Explain?
  • What makes the Sahara special?
  • Teacher will review/discuss the student answers to the questions. (see teacher notes) Have the students complete the following analogy in their notes.

    Land and Water
    Mali is generally flat.

The entire continent of Africa is essentially an elevated plateau with a very narrow coastal plain. Mali lies upon that plateau. A plateau is a relatively flat "tableland." Only in the south is the landscape hilly. Important features of Mali's south include:
    • The Fouta Djallon highlands of the southwest.
    • The Bandiagara plateau and escarpment of the southeast.
    • The Hombori Mountains of the far southeast.
Mali includes a long stretch of the Niger River. The Niger River rises in the Fouta Djallon and flows for 1,000 miles through Mali. The river has always provided water for:
    • household uses
    • fishing
    • trade
In the rainy season the Niger, in places, expands up to a mile wide. Along its course, there is an area known as the "inland delta." It is the remnant of an inland lake (like Lake Chad farther east) in which the Niger once terminated. Even today, during the rainy season in summer, the Niger fills the inland delta with water, giving it the appearance of its ancient ancestor. As the water goes down after the rains end, grass grows in the wet soil, providing grazing for animals and an opportunity for rice cultivation. Top
