WHO ARE WE?
"Amigos de Nicaragua" means "Friends of Nicaragua" in Spanish. We are the official RPCV group for former Peace Corps Volunteers who served in Nicaragua. We are currently composed of well over 140 members who live all over the United States and elsewhere, and are bound together by the following:
  • A sense of shared experience in the two years or more we each spent working in Nicaragua A love for Nicaragua: its people, its beautiful landscapes, and its culture The desire to remain aware of what's happening in Nicaragua, discuss current events, and stay in touch with current events: political, social, and cultural. The desire to continue contributing to the advancement of Nicaragua's economic development, as always, through the grass-roots type of activities that we practiced as Peace Corps Volunteers . Typically we contribute to projects run by Peace Corps volunteers, and band together to make ourselves useful in times of need, such as after Hurricane Mitch (October 1998).
We are an affiliate organization of the NPCA (National Peace Corps Association). There are many other RPCV groups , organized by geographic region of Peace Corps service (Uganda, Micronesia, etc.), and geographic location in the United States (Long Island, South Florida, etc.) We are a not-for-profit group; all membership fees are used to support grass-roots projects in Nicaragua. Granada - Culture Granada port on Lake Nicaragua, is an important commercial center in Nicaragua. From Granada , merchants ship sugar, coffee, cacao, alcohol, hides, cotton, and indigo to the Pacific Coast. Located less than an hour by car from Managua, and just over one hour from the Costa Rica border, Granada is one of the most beautiful cities in Central America. Countless historical buildings share the city's cobblestone streets with elegant homes and tranquil parks, and that urban elegance is complemented by nearby natural attractions. The route across the lake and down the San Juan River connects Granada with the Atlantic Ocean, which led the city to become one of the region's most important ports. Products from a large part of Central America were shipped to Spain via Granada, and likewise, shipments of Spanish goods were unloaded there for transport to other Central American cities. Granada is a wonderful city to explore on foot, though because of the torrid climate, it's best to do most of your strolling in the early morning and late afternoon. The cobblestone streets and neo-classic facad es of such monuments as the Hospital San Juan de Dios, Casa Pe

In 1952 the University of Managua became part of the National University of nicaragua. largest city in the country, is also its centre of commerce and culture.
http://www.americatravelling.net/nicaragua/managua/managua_culture.htm
Managua - Culture Managua, the largest city in the country, is also its centre of commerce and culture. It produces a variety of small manufactures, including processed meat, furniture, metal, and textiles; it also has an oil refinery. Coffee and cotton are the principal crops grown in the agricultural hinterland. The city has railroad and highway connections with the Pacific port of Corinto and with the cities of Leon and Granada. The Pan-American Highway and an international airport tie it to other Central and North American cities. The city is surrounded by rich agricultural lands devoted primarily to the cultivation of coffee, cotton, and corn (maize). The importance of sugarcane, rice, sorghum, cattle, and horses is decreasing. Pop. (1985 est.) city, 682,111.
ATTRACTIONS
City Tour: Even though the 1972 earthquake destroyed most of the downtown area, the remaining old Cathedral, the Ruben Dario Theater and the recently restored National Palace offers a different yet interesting tour to the past. All these with the Lake of Managua as the background. The new city is sprawling with businesses, banks, fountains and new roads. The main Universities are here, as well as the Central Government and the financial center. Archaeology: The "Acahualinca Footprints" show footprints of man and animals fleeing from a volcanic eruption some time around 6,000 to 10,000 years ago.
