Nicaragua History
Humans were present in what is now Nicaragua as early as 8,000 BC, and it's believed that there were several subsequent migrations of people from what is now Mexico. When Spanish explorers arrived in 1522, they found large Native American settlements around Lake Nicaragua and Lake Managua. Colonization soon followed, and Spain ruled for the next 300 years. Nicaragua became a fully independent country in 1834. In the 1850s, a U.S. citizen, William Walker, attempted his own takeover of Central America and was most successful in Nicaragua - he managed to make himself president. But two attempts to take over the rest of Central America failed. (He was finally tried and executed in Honduras.) Other parties, especially in the U.S., were also keeping an eye on the country in the late 1800s. One of the main reasons for their interest was Nicaragua's geography: The Rio San Juan and Lake Nicaragua were viewed as a possible route for a shipping canal that would connect the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean.

One of the main reasons for their interest was Nicaragua's geography: The Rio San Juan and Lake Nicaragua were viewed as a possible route for a shipping canal that would connect the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean. From the 1890s to the 1930s, various coups, rebellions and dictators were part of Nicaraguan politics. The U.S. sent troops on several occasions in an attempt to control the course of events. Anastasio Somoza became president in 1937 after ousting his rivals, including the rebel leader Augusto Sandino (who was assassinated). The Somoza family ruled Nicaragua for the next 40 years, amassing great wealth - they eventually owned a large portion of the country. Until the late 1970s, they enjoyed the continued support of the United States.

    Nicaragua - Culture Overview
In Nicaragua the majority of the people, including mestizos, whites, and mulattos, share a Hispanic culture. Only a small percentage of the population living on the Caribbean coast is non-Spanish speaking and non-Catholic. Nicaraguans are divided not by ethnicity but rather by the lingering effects of the Sandinista Revolution of 1979 and the subsequent civil war of the 1980s. Peace has been restored, but people continue to contest questions of national identity. So, for example, everyone agrees that El Gueguense, a piece of popular theater performed and passed on orally since the colonial period, portrays many important aspects of the Nicaraguan character. There is disagreement, however, over whether the roots of these characteristics are popular and revolutionary, or rather come from a more elite tradition.
The majority of Nicaraguans are Catholic and most communities observe a religious calendar that culminates in festive parades honoring the local patron saint. As in much of Central America, however, the coastal culture of the Caribbean lowlands is distinct from that of the more westerly, majority groups. In Nicaragua, the coast is inhabited by descendants of Africans and indigenous peoples (Miskito, Rama, and Sumu) who in the past preferred to deal with the British rather than the Spanish. The indigenous groups, dominated by the Miskito, are centered closer to the northern border with Honduras. Blacks are concentrated in the southeastern town of Bluefields, where their cultural traditions are manifest in such celebrations as Mayo Ya, which combines English May Pole traditions with Caribbean folklore and African music and dance. Bluefields is also home to a lively reggae community.

Nicaragua Nicaragua is best known not for its landscape or cultural treasures, but for the Contra war, in which the people rose up in hope only to be derailed by US-orchestrated interference. Since then, widespread privatisation and deregulation have left much of the country unemployed or in a state of shock. The good news is that throughout this period human rights have largely been respected and the country's battles are now confined to the political arena. Nicaragua is a fascinating destination for those travellers who have an awareness of history and enjoy getting to know the grass roots.
    Warning
Since the end of the civil war, armed criminal groups have operated out of the remote sectors of the northern and central regions, especially along the Honduran border. Travelers should exercise caution, taking care to travel on major highways during daylight hours only.
