Nez Perce
Nez Perce, Native American group that formerly occupied a large territory in southeastern Washington, northeastern Oregon, and central Idaho. The Nez Perce are the most numerous group of related tribes that speak Sahaptian languages (see Native American languages The name Nez Perce (French for "pierced nose") was mistakenly given to the tribe by French explorers. The French encountered people in the region who wore nose pendants, but these people actually belonged to another tribe. The Nez Perce did not pierce their noses or wear ornaments.

Students will understand the following: Chief Joseph was well educated and articulate in English. For this lesson, you will need: Access to additional reference materials about Chief Joseph Tell students that you are going to devote a class period to reading the piece of Native American literature included below and analyzing it in a class discussion. Begin by explaining that the piece you will read is from the 19th century but that, unlike so much Native American literature that began orally and later was written down, this piece originated as a written document. Go on to say that the piece was published in a magazine for a white audience in 1879, two years after the writer had surrendered to the U.S. government; that the piece was written by the Nez Perce leader Chief Joseph, whose father had been converted to Christianity by a missionary; and that the son was educated in a mission school. Ceremony Honors Nez Perce Chief Joseph Featured On New U.S. Treasury Inflation-Indexed I Bond
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
April 23, 1999
The U.S. Treasury's Bureau of the Public Debt today unveiled the new Chief Joseph $200 denomination series I inflation-indexed savings bond at a ceremony in Lewiston, Idaho. The new $200 I Bond will go on sale May 1, 1999. The bond features a portrait of Chief Joseph and a background vignette of him mounted on an Appaloosa horse, known for being bred by the Nez Perce. Participating in today's event are Van Zeck, Commissioner of the Public Debt from Washington, D.C., Governor Dirk Kempthorne of Idaho, and Samuel Penney, Chairman of the Nez Perce Tribal Executive Committee. Chief Joseph is one of eight distinguished Americans featured on the new I Bond. Though he consistently opposed war, when conflict became inevitable, Chief Joseph and other leaders led the Nez Perce on a courageous retreat in 1877 for more than a thousand miles through Montana and Idaho. After a five-day battle during freezing weather conditions with no food or blankets, only 30 miles from safety at the Canadian border, he surrendered out of concern for the women and children. In his final years, Chief Joseph spoke eloquently of the injustice of United States policy toward his people and held out hope that one day freedom and equality would come for Native Americans.

Native American Genealogy and Tribes Ten Bears, Yamparika Comanche Chief At the Medicine Lodge Creek Council at Kansas in October 1867: "I was born upon the prairie where the wind blew free and there was nothing to break the light of the sun. I was born where there were no enclosures and where everything drew a free breath. I want to die there and not within walls." Tecumseh (Shooting Star), Shawnee Chief "Where today is the Pequot? Where are the Narragansetts, the Mohawks, the Pokanoket, and many other once powerful tribes of our people? They have vanished before the avarice and the oppression of the white man, as snow before the summer sun." Joseph (Thunder Rolling in the Mountains), Nez Perce Chief Upon surrender, October 1877: "I am tired of fighting. Our chiefs are killed. Looking Glass is dead. Toohulhulzote is dead. The old men are all dead. It is the young men who say yes or no. He who led the young men [Joseph's brother, Ollokot] is dead. It is cold and we have no blankets. The little children are freezing to death. My people, some of them have run away to the hills and have no blankets, no food; no one knows where they are - perhaps freezing to death. I want to have time to look for my children and see how many I can find. Maybe I shall find them among the dead. Hear me my chiefs. I am tired; my heart is sick and sad. From where the sun now stands I will fight no more forever." After the surrender, Chief Joseph and his people were sent to Indian Territory where five of his children and many of his tribe died of disease.

INDEX OF THE NORTH AMERICAN INDIAN This page is a gateway to information concerning approximately 80 western Native American tribes, visited and photographed by Edward S. Curtis from 1890 to 1930, taken from The North American Indian , Curtis' massive lifework. The North American Indian consists of 20 volumes of text, describing in detail all aspects of each Native American tribe's life and customs. Due to the large amount of information contained in The North American Indian , this portion of The Curtis Collection website will have to be constantly updated in order to provide more detail. Therefore, this site will be in "continuous construction" starting with basic tribal information. More detailed information, photographs/gravure images, and special items will be added on a regular basis. Please continue to visit the site for information concerning the tribe(s) in which you have an interest. The decision to group certain tribes together in single description was made by the author, Curtis, based on his evaluation of the similarities of language and customs, and, in no way, reduces the importance of any one singular tribe. The selection(s) made for the quote(s) for each tribe is not meant to be definitive or compete, but informative, regarding not only the specific tribe, but of all tribes. The Curtis Collection takes no responsibility for the accuracy of the statements or quotes, made in The North American Indian , but merely reflects them for your information.

    Theme Unit Social Studies Lesson
    Author: Marc Sheehan
Title: The Nez Perce War (Direct Instruction)
Content Area: Social Studies, Study Skills
    Grade:
    Concepts Addressed:
    History, Note-Taking
Objectives: The students will be able to list three causes of the Nez Perce War. The students will be able to identify three major figures from the war. The students will also be able to describe the events that occurred at Big Hole, Montana and Snake Creek, Montana. Also, the students will be able to list three things that happened as a result of the Nez Perce War. Finally, the students will have an opportunity to practice note-taking skills.
Materials: Two books: "The Nez Perce," "The Indian Book," paper, pencils, overhead projector, overhead pens, maps of the geographic area (Idaho, Oregon, Montana, Canada) provided by the Nez Perce book (paper and overhead copies)
Time: 50 minutes for lesson, 40 minutes for quiz in two weeks. Total: 90 minutes.
Introduction: I will open this lesson by reading the famous speech spoken by Chief Joseph: (Nez Perce war leader) "I Will Fight No More Forever." He gave it after the surrender of the Nez Perce to the U.S. Army. (The class will not be told who gave this speech.) I will ask the class if they knew who gave this speech and why. After fielding their guesses, I will reveal the answer: Chief Joseph gave this speech when he surrendered to the Army, thus ending the Nez Perce War.
Procedure: This will be a direct instruction lesson. I will have the students take out a sheet of paper and a pencil. I will them that they will be taking notes on what I am about to teach them. I will model the format on the overhead for them; all they will have to do is follow my lead. (I will give a good example and a bad example before we begin.) They will be told that they will have a quiz on the information in two weeks, and they will use the notes to study for that quiz. They will have to know three causes of the Nez Perce War, three effects of the war, three people involved in the war, and two battle sites of the war. I will tell them (and also write down) all the information they need to know. I will go slowly so that the students can follow along ("Here are the causes: The first one was....")
