Naturist Resources on the Internet
Online discussion forums Last Update: 14/03/2004 Back U.K. websites European Discussion forums such as IRC are the place where 'net communication gets to be personal, dynamic and immediate - its the closest the internet can currently get to face-to-face encounters. It's an anarchic, highly personal medium, with its own culture, rules, folklore and history. Listed below are the IRC channels likely to be of interest to naturists and nudists, together with similar 'chat' forums based on web sites and e-mail discussion lists.
MSN chat-room
"Original UK Home Naturists" Microsoft have announced their intention of closing the MSN chat-rooms from next month [October 2003]. However, the moderators of this chat-room believe that chat- rooms associated with MSN Groups will continue. Since the organizers of this chat-room currently use an MSN Group as a kind of bulletin-board facility for the chat regulars, they intend to start using the group chat- room (in place of the present public one) once the axe falls. So the room will move to: http://groups.msn.com/OriginalUKHomeNaturists/chat.msnw

Introduction
Newsgroups are electronic bulletin boards where people can ‘post’ a message on a particular topic. There are 30,000+ newsgroups, so they are grouped in related categories (like business or technology) to make them easier to find. You might come across the term 'usenet' - this is just a way to refer to all of the newsgroups out there. The main difference between newsgroups and email discussion lists is that newsgroup messages are not sent to your email address. Newsgroups also tend to cover recreational subjects rather than academic ones and tend to produce a lot more messages a day. Top Related Pages External Links

GENERAL INFORMATION
What is a List Server?
Electronic mailing lists provide forums for Internet users to participate in discussions or receive information on thousands of topics. The software responsible for the management and distribution of these mailing lists to thousands of subscribers are commonly called "list servers" . A list server automatically distributes an e-mail message from one member of a list to all other members on that list. However, not all list servers are the same. There are different varieties of list server software that all a user to create and manage mailing lists. One of the most common is called LISTSERV . LISTSERV is now a commercial product sold by the developer of the software, Eric Thomas's L-Soft . The software was originally designed to operate on IBMs VM operating system and is now being made available on other common operating systems. LISTSERV is the software being operated by the National Library of Canada and the International Federation of Library Associations. Other common types of mailing list software are "majordomo" and "listproc" . Majordomo is a freeware system. Listproc is owned and developed by BITNET. Digests, electronic journals, announcements, and discussion groups are some of the types of content that are delivered through the thousands of lists available on the Internet.

Usenet Newsgroups and Frequently Asked/Answered Questions on HCI ACM interactions , Volume 1, No. 4, pp. 7-8. Gary Perlman , Ohio State University
This Page is Outdated and will Not be Updated
The links to Internet resources in the HCI Bibliography are more comprehensive and up-to-date than the resources listed here. A broad categorized index of hundreds of resources can be found on the ACM SIGCHI website on the HCI-Sites page. The most relevant links are listed under Newsgroups and General Indexes Table of Contents In the previous issue of interactions (interactions, vol. 1, no. 3, pp. 9-10) , I introduced you to browsing HCI on the World-Wide Web (WWW). In this, the second of a series of Departments on Resources for HCI developers, researchers, educators, and students, I'll introduce you to some usenet newsgroups and FAQs on HCI. The FAQs are your best resource for finding out more information about HCI, and represent the efforts of dozens or even hundreds of experts.
Usenet Newsgroups: Not a Complete Waste of Time
Usenet newsgroups are carried by thousands of UNIX and other machines around the world and are available via most internet services. There are many hundreds, perhaps thousands, of newsgroups on subjects ranging from anthropology to nanotechnology. Although people can spend all their time reading and posting to news, and although the signal-to-noise ratio can be low, there are interesting and useful discussions in some newsgroups. The comp (short for computer) and sci (short for science) hierarchies contain the newsgroups most relevant to HCI. For some, there is a FAQ list that provides a digest of most of the wisdom of a newsgroup. The comp newsgroups will be discussed along with their FAQs.

Global Education Resources: Newsgroups
Newsgroups are another of the earliest manifestations of the Internet. They have gained no small degree of notoriety as the vehicle for disseminating pornography and hate literature. Yet, in their defence, newsgroups follow a simple labeling protocol that makes it relatively easy for the newshost to filter unwanted material. Most offending groups begin with the prefix "alt". The most common newshost for educational purposes in British Columbia, the Community Learning Network, or CLN, simply filters out all newsgroups beginning with "alt". Newsgroups are online conferences that work much like email and listservs; the main difference is that the postings to a particular newsgroup do not end up in an individual electronic mail "box" unless the owner of that box requests a posting be mailed. Newsgroups are "joined" using commands specific to the software on the host. Once a newsgroup is joined, a list of unread postings is presented every time the news reader on the host machine is accessed. As an alternative, a
newsreader can be used on the users own machine, particularly if the connection to the Internet is via TCP/IP or PPP.

Below is a list of a number of Irish genealogy related newsgroups. Newsgroups are an excellent way to communicate with a large base of people on the Internet who share the same interest as you do. If you ever wish to post questions on a newsgroup pertaining to your research, these are the ones to do it on. Notice that some of them pertain to Great Britain and even former British Colonies. I recommend that you DO NOT overlook these newsgroups as many of the posts may have to do with Irish Genealogy. Also, feel free to check Deja New's Interest Finder for any other newsgroups missed here.
