86. Newsgroups Information Center - Intro

http://news.freenet.am/
This web site is a WWW front-end and the main information center for the newsgroups network in Armenia. Our newsgroups servers are not connected to the global Usenet yet, but they operate a number of local discussion groups. If you are new to this type of communication, then you are at the point where life becomes a little bit more interesting... ;) Please, read all the materials presented on these pages. If you are familiar with Usenet, its rules and general etiquette, then tune your mail/news agent to connect to either the main server news.freenet.am , or one of the servers closer to you. What is this all about? Internet Newsgroups (also known as Usenet) is a world-wide distributed discussion system. It consists of a set of "newsgroups" with names that are classified hierarchically by subject. "Articles" or "messages" are "posted" to these newsgroups by people on computers with the appropriate software these articles are then broadcast to other interconnected computer systems via a wide variety of networks. Some newsgroups are "moderated"; in these newsgroups, the articles are first sent to a moderator for approval before appearing in the newsgroup. Usenet is available on a wide variety of computer systems and networks. (Definition is taken from Usenet Info Center Actually, the global Usenet carries tens of thousands of discussion groups, each of them distributes 20-30 postings every day on average. They cover all fields of human activities, sciences, social and cultural issues, and even those newsgroups which are simply intended for idle-talking. To receive them to our local server we would have to dedicate a fast Internet connection for this puspose with a bandwith of at aleast 128 Kb/s. That is why we decided to start from a smaller thing - to create a set of discussion groups local to Armenia, with a hope that one day (inevitably!) the global Usenet would swallow us up too... ;)

If you've been on the Internet searching for REALTOR resources for more than three minutes and 58 seconds, you might have come across newsgroups. At first glance, this looks like nirvana for business folks - lots and lots of public forums, just waiting for you to pore through the information available! Alas, it doesn't quite work this way. Yes, News (otherwise known as netnews and usenet) does have literally thousands of special- interest groups, providing places to discuss anything from home improvement to houses for sale to jobs available to social commentary to pet parrots and more. You name it - it probably has a newsgroup dedicated towards it. When I began using the Internet 11 years ago, you needed to know how to program computers to access the Internet. Life was quite joyous in the absence of inappropriate (for the most part) posts. Each newsgroup had a set of rules that one generally followed, much like protocol at a cocktail party. Storming into a gathering of folks and waving about information that had nothing to do with the current conversation was (and still is) a big no-no.

One of the biggest problems people encounter when they first start exploring the web is finding things. This page provides you with pointers to the various search engines and indexes and a few hints on using them. Happy Surfing! Indexes Search Engines Other Resources Index Sites - Good Places To Find General Information
Index style sites organize information in some kind of structure. The structure is designed by a human being. The advantage here is that human intervention can lead to more selective resources, many index style sites feature the "cream of the crop" in a given subject. The down-side is the same, the web changes so quickly that it is virtually impossible for a mere mortal to stay on top of everything. Hint Remember that most of the indexes depend on people submitting information in order to stay up-to-date. In other words, just because you don't find what you're looking for at one place doesn't mean that it doesn't exist. Sometimes it takes a few searches in different places to find information that you can use. The thrill is in the hunt!
    Yahoo
The grand-daddy of indexes, Yahoo is a very popular site that allows you to browse information by category or to search for information by entering key words. It is well organized and easy to use, an excellent resource.

They are not private message centers. Messages posted to them are carried by, among others, Gmane and Google . Therefore, consider carefully what you say: thousands if not millions may read your words. Anyone can post to our most popular lists, but if you are not already subscribed, your message will be moderated. In this way, we limit the amount of spam entering the message lists. Of the lists to which you might consider subscribing, the most useful are the "discuss," "users," and "announce." Both the discuss and users lists accept posts; the announce list does not. Its function is to disseminate important information that is of interest to the general community. Individual projects have their own announce and discuss lists, too. As a rule, honor the nature of the list. If you want to post a message without it being moderated, please subscribe to the relevant mailing list. To subscribe to any list, all you have to do is click on the "Normal" or "Digest" links and send on the empty email message that will be automatically generated and addressed.
