'The Rock'
Canada’s most easterly province Newfoundland (pronounced "new-fun-lan") and Labrador consists of two main entities. The Island of Newfoundland, which is the home to the provincial capital St John’s. The other entity is Labrador, north of Newfoundland. Most of the population of the province lives in the far more accessible Newfoundland. The inland areas are heavily forested with peat bogs and lakes, where as the shorelines are spotted with towns.

Palaeo-Eskimo Culture
4,000 to 1,000 years ago
These newcomers were people whose ancestors had spread eastward across the top of the world from Alaska, probably in pursuit of musk-oxen and other land and sea mammals, until they reached what is now known as northernmost Greenland. During this expansion they very likely established small settlements along the way, and over time, people from these northern communities began to explore new and unfamiliar lands in all directions. Some of their wanderings led them southward, and attracted by game, they eventually made their way to Labrador. Archaeologists refer to these people as Palaeo-Eskimos and categorize their culture as the Arctic Small Tool tradition. The first term derives from their arctic origin and their place in prehistoric time, and the second describes the extremely small and finely chipped stone tools and weapons they manufactured ( figure ). Physically, Palaeo-Eskimo people resembled the modern Inuit, with short, stocky builds, probably straight black hair, and similar facial features. They may even have spoken a language related to that of the modern Inuit.

Quota pars operis tanti nobis committur? - Seneca Memory - A practical quality which allows us to weigh what has already been done against what might be done now. Memory is therefore a key to responsible action....Romanticism is a fantasized version of the past. Unpleasant events and personal or national failures are erased, while comforts and successes are exaggerated. Or wrongs may be exaggerated and comforts and successes erased. On either side romanticism is intended to energize false hopes. In its most exaggerated form it denies the relevance of memory and constructs free-standing abstract ideologies. - John Ralston Saul what's new at this archive, the last modification having been made on 27 November, 2001 (always check what's new first!!), or go to the top of the archive

Newfoundland and Labrador The Health System The Department of Health and Community Services provides a leadership role in health and community services programs and policy development for the Province. Newfoundland and Labrador's health services are organized around six Regional Institutional Boards, four Regional Health and Community Services Boards, two Regional Integrated Boards, one Regional Nursing Home Board in St. John's and one provincial cancer-care board. The delivery of community-based services and programs is ensured through the community health boards. Institutional boards provide hospital services and long term care to seniors affected with chronic problems. Memorial University of Newfoundland Medical School and the Newfoundland and Labrador Centre for Health Information are also part of the overall delivery organizations. Total health budget allocation is about $1.3 billion which represents approximately one third of all Newfoundland and Labrador government spending.

February 1, Vernon, British Columbia….Newfoundland and Labrador, skipped by Bas Buckle of Corner Brook, won its first Canadian senior men’s curling title Sunday at the Vernon Multiplex, defeating Nova Scotia, 9-8 in an extra end. It came down to last rock, as Buckle, facing three Nova Scotia counters, had to draw the full four-foot. He didn’t buckle under the pressure, as his perfect draw rested where it was supposed to, in the back four, touching off a wild celebration. Talk about a turnaround. Buckle’s team of third Bob Freeman, second Gerry Young and lead Harvey Holloway had competed in the last two Canadian Seniors with little success, 3-8 in St. Thomas in 2002, 4-7 in Lethbridge last year. This week, the Corner Brook Curling Club team wound up in first place after the round robin with an 8-3 mark to advance directly to today’s final. They awaited the semi-final winner, which turned to be Steve Ogden’s Mayflower Curling Club team, after it defeated defending Canadian and 2003 World Seniors champion Tom Reed of Edmonton in Saturday’s semi-final. The game appeared to turn in the ninth end, when Ogden missed both his shots, taking out one of his own in the 12-foot with his first, an attempted pick of a Buckle stone, then wicking another opponent counter on an attempted take-out and sailing through the house, leaving Buckle with a draw for three and an 8-6 lead.

Around Researchers interested in ancestors who lived in Newfoundland and Labrador use mostly the old church records , to which many guides have been produced by the Provincial Archives of Newfoundland and Labrador . It is the main repository of official records pertaining to the history of this province. A guide called Family History provides information about records of interest to genealogists. The Newfoundland and Labrador Genealogical Society is currently working on a project to make an index of these records and of cemeteries. Several censuses are also available to researchers, the most recent going back to There are also several other archives and libraries with major resources for researchers.
