Newfoundland, often called "the Rock," is a large island off the east coast of Canada. The province of Newfoundland also includes Labrador, an area on the mainland. The province has had astronomically high unemployment ever since the cod fisheries were shut down in 1992. Overfishing and climatic change have been blamed for the absence of cod in a part of the ocean that used to be teeming with them. Brian Tobin, a past premier, used to be the federal Minister of Fisheries; he was the most prominent Canadian involved in Canada's seizure of a Spanish fishing trawler in 1995.

On August 5 , Sir Humphrey Gilbert took possession of the region for England . The settlement changed hands several times between France and England, until becoming permanently British in and serving as a naval base during the American Revolutionary War and in the War of 1812 . Canada
(See also C ATHOLICITY IN C ANADA Canada, or to be more exact, the Dominion of Canada, comprises all that part of North America north of the United States, with the exception of Newfoundland, Labrador, and Alaska. The distance from the Atlantic Ocean on the east to the Pacific Ocean on the west is 3000 miles, and from the borders of the United States to the farthest point in the Arctic Ocean at least 1500 miles. With its 3,745,574 square miles, Canada exceeds in size both the united States and Australasia, and is almost as large as Europe. Physical Features Field Products The farm products of Canada are quoted in the exports of 1906 at $120,518,297, that is more than half the total value of the exports for that year. It is evident also that the progress of agriculture has been very rapid during the last decade, exceeding that of the lumber industry. Forests The Dominion Government has kept under its control 742,798 square miles of land, of which 506,220 square miles are managed by the Provincial Governments, which concede the right of exploitation within certain limits. For some years now the Federal Government has retained immense territories under the name of parks or reservations, where game and furred animals are protected. This example has been followed by the provinces of Ontario and Quebec. The best known are Yoho Park in the Rocky Mountains, Algonkin Park of more than 200,000 acres, in Ontario, and Victoria Park near Niagara Falls. Quebec also has a reservation in the northern part of the province, covering 1,620,000 acres.

Newfoundland and Labrador
'The Rock'
Canada's most easterly province Newfoundland (pronounced "new-fun-lan") and Labrador consists of two main entities. The Island of Newfoundland, which is the home to the provincial capital St John's. The other entity is Labrador, north of Newfoundland. Most of the population of the province lives in the far more accessible Newfoundland. The inland areas are heavily forested with peat bogs and lakes, where as the shorelines are spotted with towns. St John's is the oldest city in North America yet the province was the last to join the to Canadian Confederation as late as 1949. A reminder to how 'new' Canada is as a country.
