    ... Newfoundland and Labrador
    Newfoundland and Labrador
Canada's most easterly province is Newfoundland and Labrador. Nestled into the northeast corner of North America, it faces the North Atlantic. The province consists of two distinct geographical entities: the island Newfoundland, and Labrador, which is located on the mainland and borders Quebec. Together, the land masses have a total area of 405,212 square kilometres. The province's coastline stretches over more than 17,000 kilometres. The central region of the island of Newfoundland was once the home of the now extinct Beothuk Indians. The first Europeans to visit Newfoundland were Norsemen, who arrived, in the late tenth century. Other early visitors, the Basques, Portuguese, Spanish, British and French, staged fishing expeditions during the sixteenth century. Colonial warfare shaped the history of Newfoundland during the 1600s and 1700s, until the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713 ended a long period of raids. This reconfirmed British sovereignty over the territory and the fishing banks. In 1832, the people of Newfoundland were granted the right to vote for an elected assembly and, after much debate, the territory was given responsible government in 1855.

    Across Canada on a Bicycle
    - As far as possible through the North - Canada is a big country. A huge country. But if it comes to cycling it becomes reduced to two / three regions.

First there's the Rocky Mountains. Lets forget them. And then there is "Across Canada". A further question most of the time reveals it's either "along the border USA/Canada" or "the Trans-Canada Highway". And? That's it? Canada reduced to the Rockies in the west and a corridor in the south
Canada offers that much more to be seen, to be experienced. To get you a little superficial impression of it I put up the three parts of
    Western Canada

    British Columbia, Yukon
    Central Canada

Northwest Territories, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario
    Eastern Canada

    Quebec, Labrador, Newfoundland
Superficial by intention; 'Cause I'd like to see these pages just as a little push for those travellers maybe sittin' somewhere and just not knowing where to go next. My biggest suggestion: Leave the guide in your panniers and let the country itself be your guide!

In 1864, Newfoundland delegates attended the Quebec Conference and signed the resolutions which became of foundation of the 1867 British North America Act. But it was not until over 80 years later, in 1949, that Newfoundland became a Canadian province. Active debate in the colony during the 1860s culminated in the hard-fought "confederation election" of 1869, won by the anti-confederates in a landslide victory. William V. Whiteway, ca. early 1900s. Whiteway was an avowed confederate in 1869.
