The Far East of the Western World
Nestled into the northeast corner of North America, Newfoundland and Labrador offers a leisurely Old World pace, modern conveniences and a Unique spirit. It is one of the best-kept vacation secrets on the continent. The air is clean, the people are friendly and the vistas well, you'll just have to see for yourself. There are two distinct parts to Newfoundland and Labrador. The island of Newfoundland, located at the mouth of the St. Lawrence River, is about half way between the centre of North America and Western Europe. Its location has always been key to its history. The Vikings landed here 1,000 years ago and established the first European settlement in the New World. During the past two centuries the island has been the landing site of the first trans-Atlantic telegraph cable, the jump-off for the first non-stop air crossing of that great ocean and the spot where Marconi received the first trans-Atlantic wireless message. The Strait of Belle Isle separates the island from Labrador to the north. Bordering on the Canadian province of Quebec, it remains a vast, pristine wilderness. The northern lights shine over the largest caribou herd in the world. It was here in the sixteenth century that a Basque whaling fleet established one of the earliest industrial complexes in the New World.

Government Newfoundland and Labrador: History and People History The central region of the island of Newfoundland was once the home of the now extinct Beothuk Indians. The first Europeans to visit Newfoundland were Norsemen, who arrived in the late 10th century. (The Norse settlement at l'Anse aux Meadows was the world's first cultural discovery location to receive recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.) Other early visitors included the Basques, Portuguese, Spanish, British and French. In the 16th century and earlier they staged fishing expeditions into the new founde lande. In 1497, the Italian seafarer Giovanni Caboto (John Cabot) landed on the island on June 24, 1497, on the feast of St. John the Baptist. Cabot called the new land "St. John's Isle" in honour of the saint and claimed it for Henry VII of England, his employer. Warfare between the British and the French shaped the history of Newfoundland during the 1600s and 1700s. In 1662 France established a fort and colony at Placentia. The Treaty of Utrecht in 1713 reconfirmed British sovereignty over Newfoundland and the fishing banks.

Newfoundland, one of the four Atlantic provinces of Canada, consisting of the island of Newfoundland and, on the mainland, a coastal portion of the Labrador region.
      Land and Resources
Newfoundland, with a total area of 405,720 sq km (156,649 sq mi), is the seventh largest province in Canada; less than 1% of the land is owned by the federal government. The extreme dimensions of the island are 523 km (325 mi) from north to south and 515 km (320 mi) from east to west; extreme dimensions of the Labrador region are 1046 km (650 mi) from north to south and 724 km (450 mi) from east to west. Elevations range from sea level to 1622 m (5322 ft) atop Mount Caubvick (known as Mont D'Iberville Torngat Mountains in northern Labrador. The deeply indented shoreline totals 13,676 km (8498 mi) for the island and 15,286 km (9498 mi) for Labrador.
      Physical Geography
      Rivers and Lakes
The river shown to the left is Eclipse River, Labrador. The longest river is the Churchill in Labrador; with its tributaries it drains much of the Labrador Plateau. At Churchill Falls, the river drops some 75 m (some 245 ft); a large hydroelectric power project has appreciably diminished the flow over the falls. The major rivers draining the island are the Exploits, Gander, and Humber.

    Newfoundland and Labrador, Gander
Gander, town, on east-central Newfoundland Island, in the province of Newfoundland, Canada. Gander developed after the site was chosen for the construction of an air base in 1935. During World War II (1939-1945), the airport served as an Atlantic base for British, Canadian, and United States aircraft. In 1945 the base became a civilian airport, which the Canadian government acquired in 1949 after Newfoundland became a province. The Air Control Center in Gander plays a major role in controlling flights over the North Atlantic. Gander was incorporated as a town in 1954. In 1985 an airplane carrying 256 passengers—248 of whom were U.S. soldiers returning from the Middle East—crashed after takeoff from Gander. All crew members and passengers were killed. The accident was the worst air disaster in Canada's history. Population 10,207 (1986); 10,364 (1996). Microsoft® Encarta® Online Encyclopedia 2001
