The Canada GenWeb Project's purpose is to create a global library for Canadian genealogy research on the internet. There are links to pages of information on Canada as a whole, plus each province in Canada has its own web page. There are also links to Canadian genealogy sites and pages for primary resource records files, queries, and lookups. CensusLinks: Canada
http://censuslinks.com/Canada/ inGeneas
http://www.ingeneas.com/index.html
Look in the searchable "inGeneas Database" for more than 50,000 Canadian passenger and immigration records from the 1700s to the early 1900s. Search results give a listing of matches; following links from the result page gives you info on the person's age, the year of the record, and a description. You can order transcripts of records you want more info on; you can also order a photocopy of the original microfilmed document. (Click on the Order button to bring up the order form; there is a fee for these services.) This site also features the only electronic version in existence of the National Archives of Canada (NAC) Miscellaneous Immigration Index (14,519 records previously available in card-file format only at the Archives). Once you locate a record in the NAC, you can either order a copy of it from the National Archives (instructions are included) or you can borrow a copy of the microfilm and make your own copy.

Fall Foliage, Nature and Harvest Festivals Newfoundland and Labrador have an air of mystery and a wealth of wilderness. Newfoundland is an island located at the eastern most point of Canada. Labrador is located on Canada's main land and is accessed by ferry from northern Newfoundland. The map is clickable for major cities using MapBlast From Newfoundland's western highlands and east coast lowlands the landscape is comprised of towering mountains, precipitous fjords, deep glacial lakes, coastal bogs, and cliffs sculpted by the waves. On the east coast you can experience the awesome power of the open ocean and a rugged shore that begs to be explored. In the west, you're confronted with the remnants of the ancient Appalachian Mountains. Between, you'll find the rolling forested hills, bogs and ponds that are so typical of the island. There is significant history here. In your travels you'll learn about the death of an ancient ocean and the collision of continents as recorded in the rocks of Gros Morns National park. For those looking for vast stretches of still uninhabited wilderness, really broaden your horizons by taking some time to visit the natural wonders of Labrador.

Nestled into the northeast corner of North America, facing the North Atlantic, is Newfoundland,Canada's most easterly province. Lying between the 46th and 61st parallels, the province consists of two distinct geographical entities: Newfoundland and Labrador. The island of Newfoundland, which forms the southern and eastern portion of the province, is a large triangular-shaped area of some 112 000 km2, while the province's total area is 405 720km2. Located at the mouth of the St. Lawrence River, the island is about halfway between thecentre of North America and the coast of western Europe. The island of Newfoundland is separated from the Canadian mainland by the Strait of Belle Isle in the north and by the wider Cabot Strait in the south. The mainland, Labrador, is bordered by northeastern Quebec. Approximately two and a half times as large as the island, it remains a vast, pristine wilderness, where the northern lights, or aurora borealis, flicker over the largest caribou herd in the world. An excellent CLICK.ON-map.

European exploration in the region would have to justify itself not only in terms of a route to Cathay, but also in terms of what of value might be found on the New World itself. Later Exploration John Cabot may have discovered an ocean route from Europe to North America, but the information he returned with did little to clarify the geography of eastern Canada. Whether this was the northeastern tip of Asia or one of the islands that geographers believed to lie out in the Ocean Sea nobody yet knew. Over the next quarter century, however, a succession of voyages undertaken by several Portuguese explorers as well as the discoveries of Giovanni Verrazano, sailing for the king of France, proved beyond doubt that something resembling a full continent lay astride the route to the east. Section of Gerolamo da Verrazzano's map of the world, 1529.
Dreams of Empire: Canada before 1700
(44 kb) Enthusiasts continued to believe that there might be a narrow channel through this landmass or at least a northern, navigable waterway around it. Further European exploration in the region, however, would henceforth have to justify itself not only in terms of a route to Cathay, but also in terms of what of value might be found in the New World itself.

    REPORT FROM THE CCGE CHAIR
Peggy March, our Associate Regional Representative (Atlantic), has specific responsibility for Newfoundland and Labrador, and it has been due largely to her persistence and initiative that this venture has come about. Peggy epitomizes the type of leadership available to us from recently retired teachers who know their geography, were experienced and successful in teaching it, and are respected for that by their peers. I hope that my message at this time next year will report similar developments elsewhere. You may have noticed that the Newsletter no longer carries official reports from the Regional Representatives. Instead, the space is available to our members to contribute whatever news they might have. Think of recent activities in your school or area, or perhaps that have arisen, or simply share an idea on geography curriculum, or on teaching. The space is yours to use.
