Mountains
Canada's vast area means it has many varying types of terrain, much of which is mountainous. The principal mountainous region is the Western Cordillera, or Cordilleran, mountain system located in western Canada in British Columbia, Alberta, Yukon Territory and Northwest Territories. A second major mountain system in Canada is located along the north-eastern seaboard from Ellesmere Island down through to the Torngat Mountains of Quebec and Newfoundland and Labrador. A third system of significance is the Appalachians which cross much of eastern Canada. The following list of mountains and other heights was chosen on the basis of giving the highest point, and other representative or unusually well-known high points for generally recognized ranges of mountains or hills. All named peaks of 3300 metres or more are listed. Where mountains occur on inter-provincial boundaries, they are listed for each province forming part of the boundary. Heights for the tables below were taken from spot heights given on the most recent 1:50 000 maps, or were interpolated using the contours on these maps. These heights were then checked by the Geodetic Survey Division, Natural Resources Canada for accuracy. Heights are given in metres. All names are official and can be found in the Canadian Geographical Names Data Base maintained by the

Introduction [top]
This in-process cartobibliography lists and describes printed and manuscript maps of Newfoundland and Labrador in libraries and archives in Newfoundland, other parts of Canada, the United States, and England. Eventually, it is hoped to include maps in collections in other countries, such as France and Spain. As well as including separate maps, an attempt is made to include maps in atlases, books, and periodicals, but it is not comprehensive. Very early, significant, maps of the region will be included, but the emphasis is on the area within the current geographical boundaries of the Province of Newfoundland. The time limits will be up to and including 1949, the date of Newfoundland's confederation with Canada, although some later maps are currently included. In the not too distant future, it is hoped to have an image displayed with the entry, at least for those in our collection.

Natural Resources Canada Geographical Names of Newfoundland and Labrador Corner Brook The brook which flows through the city was so named in 1767 by Captain James Cook (1728-1779). For many years it remained a relatively unnoticed settlement, until a sawmill began operations in 1864. A more dramatic change occurred in 1923, when Corner Brook was selected as the site for one of the world's largest pulp-and-paper mills. Today it is Newfoundland's second-largest city, capitalizing on the paper industry and a superb location on a fiord framed by the surrounding hills. Source: Hamilton, William B. (1996): Place Names of Atlantic Canada, University of Toronto Press, Toronto, p. 193. Related Sites: Grand Falls-Windsor An amalgamated town on the Exploits River. Grand Falls is descriptive of its 'spectacular falls' and was developed as a company town by the Anglo-Newfoundland Development Company. Here Newfoundland's first pulp-and-paper mill was officially opened with due ceremony on 11 October 1909. The mill, now owned by Abitibi-Price, continues to provide an economic base for the town. Windsor, first known as 'Grand Falls Station' for its position on the Newfoundland Railway, was probably renamed for the royal house of Windsor. Historically, this area was a centre of Beothuk culture, a fact commemorated in the Mary March Regional Museum, named in honour of one of the last of this race.

Newfoundland and Labrador
'The Rock'
Canada's most easterly province Newfoundland (pronounced "new-fun-lan") and Labrador consists of two main entities. The Island of Newfoundland, which is the home to the provincial capital St John's. The other entity is Labrador, north of Newfoundland. Most of the population of the province lives in the far more accessible Newfoundland. The inland areas are heavily forested with peat bogs and lakes, where as the shorelines are spotted with towns. St John's is the oldest city in North America yet the province was the last to join the to Canadian Confederation as late as 1949. A reminder to how 'new' Canada is as a country.

About the Geology of Canada - "The new Geological Map of Canada is the latest edition produced by the Geological Survey of Canada. The map displays bedrock formations at or near the surface of the land, on the sea floor above the continental crust that forms the Canadian landmass, and oceanic crust surrounding the landmass. The bedrock units are grouped and coloured according to geological age and composition. The colours of offshore units and oceanic crust are paler and more generalized than those on land, although the constituent units offshore are still easily discernible from their dashed boundaries. This colour design, coupled with the use of a white buffer zone at the coast allows the coastline of Canada to be readily distinguished and still show the grand geological architecture of the Canadian landmass.
