France retained the fishing rights on the northwest coast of Newfoundland that had been granted by the Peace of Utrecht in 1713 and was also awarded St. Pierre and Miquelon. In 1783 the "French Shore" was redefined to include the entire western coast. In the early 19th cent. the Hudson's Bay Company developed the fur trade, and this, together with the expansion of the fishing industry, led to increased immigration from Europe, particularly Ireland. Representative government was introduced in 1832 and parliamentary government in 1855. The port of Heart's Content became the western terminus of the transatlantic cable in 1866. In 1869, Newfoundland voters rejected union with Canada; in 1895, after a disastrous fire in St. John's and the failure of local banks, negotiations to join Canada resumed but were unsuccessful. Relatively little attention had been paid to Labrador, but in 1895 iron ore was discovered in the Grand Falls (now Churchill Falls) region. As part of the Anglo-French Entente Cordiale of 1904, France abandoned the French Shore. Possession of Labrador was disputed by Quebec and Newfoundland until 1927, when the British privy council demarcated the western boundary, enlarged Labrador's land area, and confirmed Newfoundland's title to it.

The major difference between a Canadian province and a Canadian territory is that a province is a creation of the Constitution Act, while a territory is created by federal law. Thus, the federal government has more direct control over the territories, while provincial governments have many more competences and rights. Provinces have a great deal of power relative to the federal government, having a large measure of control over spending on social programs such as medicare, education, employment insurance, and the like. They receive "transfer payments" from the federal government to pay for these, as well as exacting their own taxes. Click the link for more information.

Geography
Quebec is bounded on the N by Hudson Strait and Ungava Bay, on the E by the Labrador area of Newfoundland and Labrador and the Gulf of St. Lawrence, on the S by New Brunswick and the United States, and on the W by Ontario, James Bay, and Hudson Bay. Quebec is Canada's largest province; it is three times the size of France and seven times the size of Great Britain. The Canadian (or Laurentian) Shield underlies the northern nine tenths of the province, which is relatively unexplored and uninhabited; the region has been planed by glacial action into a pattern of rounded hills (including the Laurentian Mts.), swiftly flowing rivers, and numerous lakes and bogs. Dense forests cover much of the land, and the region is rich in minerals. South of the Canadian Shield lies the great St. Lawrence River. On both sides of the river south of Quebec city are lowlands that are the centers of agriculture, commerce, and industry. Quebec city and are on the north bank of the river, and Montreal , the leading industrial center of Canada, occupies an island where the Ottawa River joins the St. Lawrence. Another industrial center is the region of

On Canadian territory, the longest distance north to south (on land) is 4,634 kilometres from Cape Columbia on Ellesmere Island, Nunavut to Middle Island in Lake Erie, Ontario. The longest distance east to west is 5,514 kilometres from Cape Spear, Newfoundland and Labrador, to the Yukon Territory-Alaska boundary. The total length of the Canada-United States boundary is 8,890 kilometres. Canada has the longest coastline of any country in the world. The coastline includes the mainland coast and also the coasts of offshore islands. The total length of Canada's coastline is 202 080 kilometres. The Trans-Canada Highway length is 7,604 kilometres. It is the longest national highway in the world. Canada's vast area means it has many varying types of terrain, much of which is mountainous. The principal mountainous region is the Western Cordillera, or Cordilleran, mountain system located in western Canada in British Columbia, Alberta, Yukon Territory, and Northwest Territories. A second major mountain system in Canada is located along the north-eastern seaboard from Ellesmere Island down through to the Torngat Mountains of Quebec and Newfoundland and Labrador. A third system of significance is the Appalachians which cross much of Eastern Canada.

"Governing Newfoundland is a form of licensed insanity," CBC's Rex Murphy once said. Premiers don't really govern, "they measure their stamina against the intractabilities of history, geography and the unemployment stats." Canada's newest province has only had a handful of leaders since joining Confederation in 1949. From firebrands like Joey Smallwood to measured – some say dull – diplomats like Roger Grimes, the people of Newfoundland and Labrador have chosen their premiers not by party but by personality and promises.

http://www.childrenswish.ca/chapters/newfoundland/index.php
The Newfoundland and Labrador (NL) Chapter of the Children's Wish Foundation of Canada was established in 1986 through the efforts of VOCM Radio Newfoundland. In June of that year they carried a story about the Foundation starting in Canada and immediately Vice-President Elmer Harris was sent to Montreal to meet the Foundation's president and staff. VOCM then contacted Lloyd Matthews and asked him to head up the chapter in our province. To service the vast geography of Newfoundland and Labrador, the Foundation identified key persons in various regions to set up subchapters to create public awareness, assist with fund raising activities and to assist with the wish granting activities of the organization. In the years since 1986 the Foundation has granted 336 wishes across our province and grown to include 20 volunteer subchapter groups. Our provincial office is located in Woodgate Plaza - next to Toys R US and has been donated to us by the Baine Johnston Corporation and Leon's Home Furnishings. Our 1500 square feet of space include opportunities to display photo's of our past wishes, a volunteer area and a quiet room for meetings with families of wish children.

February 23, 2003 On December 6, 2001, an amendment to Canada's federal Constitution Act officially approved a name change from the easternmost province of Newfoundland to the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. The move for change began in the early 1990s to provide "symbolic but important recognition of Labrador's status as a full and vital partner within the province, with its own unique geography, history and culture." (source) The name Newfoundland alone represents less than half of the territory of the province, which consists both of mainland Labrador in the north and island of Newfoundland in the south. Before the change Labrador was definitely neglected by the provincial name.
