The New Zealand land mass is ancient. Geologists estimate that it separated from the ancient supercontinent of Gondwana around 80 million years ago as a single land mass, which geologists call Rangitata. Around 5 million years ago, NewZealand?s North and South Islands began to take the shape they have today. Rainforest covered most of New Zealand?s land area as recently as seven thousand years ago. Isolated from the rest of the world by vast expanses of ocean, New Zealand was a haven for unique species of flora and fauna, including many species of flightless birds that evolved in safety at ground level through the millennia. Perhaps the most well-known of these flightless birds today is the Kiwi, which adapted to a forest environment, feeding mainly upon earthworms and larvae. Humans first settled on New Zealand somewhere between 950 and 1130 AD. The first settlers were Polynesians who, well known for their navigation skill, probably made the voyage in twin-hulled or outrigger canoes. These first Polynesian settlers called their new home ?Aotearoa,? which means ?land of the long white cloud.?

Maori arrived from the central Pacific Ocean in great ocean-going sailing canoes approximately 1000 years ago. Led by great explorers and seafarers, they named the country Aotearoa (Land of the Long White Cloud). Archaeological evidence suggests that the first arrivals settled in the South Island, although the majority of Maori settled later in the North Island. Here Maori developed a culture of fishing, hunting and gathering supplemented by settled agriculture, notably of the kumara (sweet potato), which they had carried from the islands. Their distinctive culture, including oral traditions, customs, waiata (song), crafts, and social systems is unique in the world. Maori comprise whanau (extended family groups), hapu (sub-tribes, of several whanau), and iwi (tribes, of a number of hapu), ruled by kaumatua and kuia (male and female elders, the heads of families) and rangitira (semi-hereditary chiefs). A system of tapu (the designation of objects or actions as sacred or special) was designed to regulate everyday life, under the direction of tohunga (priests). An important Maori concept is mana; there is no exact translation, but it includes ideas of an individual or group's influence, prestige, pride, and dignity.

New Zealand labour history Material on this site relates to the history of the industrial labour movement in New Zealand. The articles’ authors are Kath Clark and David Verran . The focus is primarily on the period to 1937, when the New Zealand Federation of Labour was formed, but some articles traverse unions’ histories up to but not including the passage of the Employment Contracts Act in 1991. This legislation was a watershed for New Zealand industrial relations, and the union organisation landscape altered substantially from this date. It is likely that further dramatic changes will occur with passage of the Employment Relations Act (2000).
