New Zealand History
New Zealand was originally settled in the 1100s by the Maoris (pronounced MAU-rees ), who called it Aotearoa (Land of the Long White Cloud). A tradition of oral history recounts how 10 great canoes arrived from an island near Tahiti to populate the islands. For more than 500 years Maori life went untouched by the outside world. They had spectacular zigzag tattoos; developed a culture of fishing, hunting and gathering. Rival groups warred with one another, and the battles often resulted in the losers being eaten or enslaved by the victors. The next epoch in the islands' history opened in 1642, when the Dutch explorer Abel van Tasman sighted the land and called it Niuew Zeeland. He charted part of the coastline but left without officially claiming it. Some 130 years later Capt. James Cook claimed the islands for the British throne. He circumnavigated both main islands, which he mapped with an accuracy that is still admired (and used) today. However, it wasn't until the 1830s that European settlement began in earnest. Conflict between the Maoris and the British settlers ensued until 1840, when a conditional peace was established with the Treaty of Waitangi. Another, bloodier war was fought in the early 1860s and ended with the uneasy coexistence that persists to this day.

New Zealand History - Maori
Maori legend has it that Chief Kupe was the first to arrive in New Zealand from Hawaiki around 950 AD in his canoe called Maataa-hourua. He landed at Whanganui-a-tara (near Wellington). Upon seeing land he said "He ao, he aotea he aotearoa" It is a cloud ..a white cloud .. a long white cloud. In about 1150 Toi and Whatonga followed Kupu but it wasn't until about 1350 that great fleets of Maori arrived and settled. The exact reason why the Maori came to New Zealand is unknown, one thoery is that their home land was becoming so over populated that a shortage of food forced some families to adventure out into the seas in search of a new homeland.
When they arrived in Aotearoa (Land of the long white cloud) they found a land devoid of mammals for hunting (apart from bats and marine mammals New Zealand has no native mammals). They had to resort to eating sea food, birds, rats (Kiore) and dogs which they brought with them, they also cultivated kumara (sweet potato), taro and yam. Cannibalism was also also know to have taken place, expecially in the Queen Charlotte Sounds, this was not only a source of protein but to also eliminate the Mana of their enemys (Mana meaning authority, influence, prestige, power which was usually earned through bravery in war).

About NZ - History
New Zealand History
New Zealand was one of the last corners of the planet to be inhabited by people. Around 950AD the Maori arrived from Polynesia (Tonga and Hawaii) to the northern part of the North Island. There is however evidence of earlier settlement by other more peaceful Polynesian people.
The first European to see New Zealand officially was the Dutch sailor, Abel Janszoon Tasman in December 1642 although there is evidence of Spanish or Portuguese caravels visiting the North Island in a earlier period. Maori war parties prevented Abel Tasman from actually landing initially but he is recorded as the first European to climb Mount Victoria in the Auckland harbour . In 1769-70 Captain James Cook circumnavigated and charted New Zealand. Initial contact with the Maori was also violent but in many areas his ship was welcomed and the scientific nature of his visit was carried out with his ship wintering over in the scenic Malbough Sounds.
The first European bases in New Zealand were offshoots of the American and Australian whaling industry from 1790 onwards.
From 1839 to 1841, New Zealand was administered as part of the New South Wales colony. In 1840 the Maori ceded the sovereignty of New Zealand to the British in exchange for protection and guarantees on their land fearing colonisation by France. For almost 20 years however, there was intermittent fighting between different Maori tribes and colonists over disputes to land and trading rights. In 1860 British troops and native irregular troops were used to finally overcome Maori resistance to the British administration and land use.

New Zealand has a rich and varied Maritime Heritage, our ancestors both Polynesian and European relied on the ocean for transport, food, and trade. Indeed it did not stop there. Unfortunately in New Zealand much of the population is blissfully unaware not only of our Maritime Heritage but also its importance. MAANZ has many objectives which are listed within this site, our main objective is to be a voice for our Maritime Heritage. Each year many relics and artifacts that reflect our Maritime Heritage are lost forever.
