What's making the news in New Zealand. About New Zealand The Realm of New Zealand is made up of the North and South islands, separated by the narrow Cook Strait, and many smaller islands, including Stewart Island to the south of South Island. The National plant of New Zealand is the Pohutukawa and the National bird is the Kiwi. The first European to reach the islands was the Dutch navigator Abel Tasman, in 1642 when the name New Zealand was given them by a Dutch cartographer. Captain James Cook visited in 1769 and claimed the islands for Great Britain. It was almost another 75 years before the British government formally annexed New Zealand.

Government Auction Government auction is the place to be to pick up surplus items from various New Zealand government departments. These items include office furniture, computers, machinery, vehicles and more. We are also the auctioneer of choice for the sale of goods seized by the New Zealand police and customs. As you can imagine, these auctions can include a huge variety of items, including televisions, stereos, jewellery, cigarettes, bicycles and much more. With over 25 government departments and ministries, many of them employing hundreds of people and spread across offices right around the country, the New Zealand government will always be a major buyer and seller of equipment. Before buying at any auction, it makes good sense to attend any auction previews, usually held on the day of the sale. You can also view some items online at our website. This is your opportunity to inspect goods before bidding, and to have your questions about any item answered All items are sold as-is, and all sales are final. Removal of sold items from the venue are also the purchaser's responsibility. Turners Auctions can help you arrange delivery through a suitable company, but you must cover any fees they charge.

Contact Council staff to find out when submissions close and when they plan to hold a hearing. Most councils, City/District, Unitary and Regional, have their LTCCP’s out for consultation NOW.
It is most important that all councils receive a submission on the subject of GMO’s in the environment. http://www.naturallaw.org.nz/genetics/MediaRel/98_07_27.asp
Press Release:
Auckland, 27th July 1998
New Zealand Government and Australia New Zealand Food Authority (ANZFA) acted undemocratically in bypassing health concerns of New Zealanders about genetically engineered foods
An inquiry report released by the Australia New Zealand Food Authority shows that the submissions from 10,000 New Zealanders about potential health hazards of genetically engineered foods were ignored by the Authority. ANZFA bypassed detailed consideration of New Zealanders concerns by simply saying that the New Zealand submissions were "in response to a public campaign". Instead the Authority opted to take account of the views of so-called stake holders including Australian Food Council, Hort Research, CSIRO, NZ Grocery Marketer's Association and the US Food and Drug Administration. As a result ANZFA's original plan to require labelling of most genetically altered foods was scrapped in favour of a policy which will allow almost all genetically engineered foods to escape labelling. New Zealand Deputy Health Minister, Tuarike Delamere, has agreed with ANZFA proposals. Although there might be risks to public health from GE foods, he says, it would be too hard and too costly for New Zealand to identify genetically altered ingredients in food. He is also afraid that New Zealand will be in breach of trade agreements if it requires labelling of GE foods. Europe is taking a different tack. EU MPs find it harder to ignore the concerns of constituents-the new politics in Europe requires that Government listen to the people. So the EU has required mandatory labelling of GE foods. In contrast, New Zealand MPs can bypass public concerns and poison their own constituents in order to defend free trade.

Subject: B3.1 The Political Scene
Would anyone care to write a brief summary of the main political parties and post them to the net for comment?
B3.1.1 Why 'New Zealand'
It is simply "New Zealand" - not the "People's Republic of" or "Commonwealth of" or "Kingdom of" or anything like that. It used to be "The Dominion of New Zealand" pursuant to a long-forgotten dream of a kind of federal British empire that one of our early prime ministers (Bill Massey) was keen on, but the "Dominion of" bit was dropped several years ago. Robin Klitscher gives us: "The Royal Charter effecting the separation of NZ from the Colony of NSW in 1840 said "the principal Islands, heretofore known as, or commonly called, the 'Northern Island', the 'Middle Island' and Stewart's (sic) Island' shall henceforward be designated and known respectively as 'New Ulster', 'New Munster' and 'New Leinster'". "In 1846 a further Royal Charter changed this into two Provinces only, New Ulster and New Munster, with New Munster incorporating New Leinster and the North Island up to the latitude at the mouth of the Patea River. Each of the two was to have a Governor and Legislative and Executive Council under the Governor-in-Chief and Executive Council for the whole colony. Limited elections were held in 1851 but before they were completed the New Zealand Constitution Act 1852 unravelled all that and substituted the six Provinces Auckland, New Plymouth, Wellington, Nelson, Canterbury and Otago, each with limited elective Councils.
