41. Tuatara Facts
List of facts about the new zealand native reptile.
http://www.nz.com/NZ/Geography/TuataraFacts.html
TUATARA FACTS
  • The tuatara is native to New Zealand
  • It is the sole survivor of the beak-heads which is a group of very ancient reptiles
  • The tuatara is the most ancient of all living reptiles. It is even older than the dinosaurs
  • It has survived for almost 200 million years
  • Tuatara can live up to 100 years
  • The male is much bigger than the female
  • Young tuatara have a third eye. It is on top of the brain between it's other eyes. It becomes covered over when the tuatara is an adult
Babies
The female lays 8 - 15 eggs in a shallow hole in the ground. The eggs are not cared for in any way by the parents. It takes 12 - 15 months for the young to hatch. The female may only lay eggs every 3 - 4 years
Food
Tuataras are carnivores. They eat weta , moths and beetles. Sometimes they eat small lizards and even the eggs and chicks of petrels. At the zoo we feed them baby mice, huhu grubs , worms, meal worms and insects. They are fed twice a month.
Where are they?
Tuataras were once found all over New Zealand but now they only survive on offshore islands because of the rodents, wild cats and pigs that were introduced to the mainland. Rarere_K@wcc.govt.nz via Richard Naylor on soc.culture.new-zealand.

Kia Ora and Kisses From New Zealand
by Wanda Moreau Judy Rabalais Introduction Task ... Conclusion
    Introduction
New Zealand is a mixture of the past and the present, sometimes existing side by side. The Maori, the indigenous tribes, are people of distinct culture. The visitor is immediately surrounded by Maori influences and drawn into the background of this fascinating people. A study of the Maori is unique and interesting because of their history and continuing search for recognition in their homeland. You and your fellow travelers will explore the history, culture, geography and art of the Maori people of New Zealand. As you travel through the available sites, you will become aware of the fierce pride and tradition associated with this ancient people. In this quest for knowledge you will add to your research resources by using the Internet and computer software. During the course of this unit, travelers will greet each other with the traditional Maori salutation,"Kia ora", which means hello and/or goodbye.
    Kia ora!

Word: Word Starts with Ends with Definition Location: Oceania Oceania is a name used for varying groups of islands of the Pacific Ocean. In its narrow usage it refers to Polynesia (including New Zealand), Melanesia (including New Guinea) and Micronesia. In a wider usage it includes Australia. It may also include the Malay archipelago. Uncommonly does usage include islands such as Japan and the Aleutian Islands. Although the islands of Oceania do not form part of a true continent, for the purposes of dividing the whole world into continents Oceania is sometimes associated with the continent of Australia. As such, it is the smallest continent in area and the second smallest, after Antarctica, in population. This article primarily refers to the grouping of Polynesia, Melanesia, Micronesia and Australia.

As far as possible the emphasis is on doing Geography. Practical sessions associated with most courses consolidate theories learned in lectures and extend the application of techniques. Instrumentation for monitoring the environment and laboratory analysis of earth and organic materials are part of the programme. In addition, computer applications form an important component of the practical approach. Definition of a Major in Geography:
    • at least 6 points from the following: GEOG 101, 102, 201, 202 plus GEOG 204
Geography can be effectively combined with a wide range of other subjects, in either a BA or BSc degree programme. As part of a BA degree it complements subjects such as Economics, Political Studies, Psychology and Sociology; in addition, it may be combined with language study in order to focus upon a specific culture or country. Within a BSc degree the field and laboratory research components complement Biological Sciences, Environmental Science, and Marine Science, Geology and Physics; while the geographic information systems and spatial analysis components complement Computer Science and Statistics. Geography is an excellent complement to Law or Commerce when taken as part of a Conjoint degree programme: either a BA/LLB, BSc/LLB, BA/BCom or BSc/BCom. Students who have completed conjoint degrees including Geography have found that their understanding of human and environmental systems is valuable to careers such as environmental law, planning and marketing.
