    Climate :

New Zealand's maritime climate is temperate with an average of 2000 sunshine hours a year. January and February are the warmest months, with July the coldest. Average temperatures range from 7ºC in winter to 16ºC in summer, although in many places, summer temperatures can reach the 30s. Annual rainfall varies greatly from less than 40mm in Central Otago to more than 12,000mm in the Southern Alps. Seasons :
New Zealand's seasons are the opposite of the northern hemisphere - summer starts in December, autumn in March, winter in June and spring in September. Geography :
Lying in the Pacific Ocean, 2250km east of Australia, New Zealand is made up of the North and South Islands, Stewart Island and a number of smaller islands. Mountain ranges and hill country dominate the country's landscape. In the North Island, the volcanic interior has given rise to unique thermal areas with active volcanoes, geysers, mud pools and hot springs. In the South Island, the alpine scenery offers rugged mountains, spectacular fiords, glaciers and lakes. Highest mountain Aoraki/Mt Cook (3,754m)

FILMING IN NEW ZEALAND THE GEOGRAPHY GETTING THERE AND VISAS ... NEW ZEALAND PHOTO LIBRARY
the geography ..... New Zealand has a wide variety of terrain within a relatively small area - mountains, lakes, rivers, fjords, gorges, glaciers and volcanoes. It has a long coastline with multifarious types of beach, a majority of which have golden sands. However, white-sanded, clear-watered beaches are predominant in the subtropical north (Bay of Islands). Black sanded beaches can also be found in both the North Island (Taranaki) and South Islands (West Coast).
In the South Island there are extremely rugged coastlines (Kaikoura) and special geographical features like the blow holes at Punakaike, also known as The Pancake Rocks due to their physiognomy. The Marlborough Sounds and Fiordland coasts have narrow beach lines and deep bays with fantastic fishing.
The major mountain regions are in the South Island (The Southern Alps). The highest mountain is Mount Cook (Aorangi) which is 3764m (12,349ft). The South Island lake districts have two unique glaciers that flow close to the sea, Fox, and Franz Josef Glaciers. In the North Island there are four major volcanoes. Ruapehu 2796m (9175ft), Ngaurahoe, 2290m (7515ft), and Tongariro 1968m (6517ft) are situated in close proximity to each other in the centre of the North Island while Mount Taranaki 2518m (8260ft) is situated further to the west.
There are eight major lakes in the South Island. The largest is Te Anau (344sq.kms, 133sq.miles), followed by Lake Wakatipu (Queenstown) and Lake Wanaka. New Zealand’s largest lake is Taupo in the North Island, which extends over 606sq.kms. (232sq.miles) and is the crater of a huge extinct volcano. The central North Island is a volcanic plateau with areas of significant thermal activity, hot springs, mud pools and geysers, particularly around Rotorua.

    Research Fellow Room: K3.26
    Telephone: +64 7 838 4466, ext: 8437
Email: jml@waikato.ac.nz I am a foundation member of the Migration Research Group (MRG), based in the Department of Geography, University of Waikato and funded by FoRST since 1993. In addition I teach research methodologies and the geography of migration.
    Research Interests
My particular interest is in changing migration systems - both international and internal. My PhD research, completed in 1998, was on the impact of North-East Asian migration to New Zealand. I have an additional research interest in the social issues surrounding the structure of rural communities. Currently I am conducting a survey of returning New Zealand citizens. The return flows of New Zealanders is still a neglected element in the 'brain drain' debate and no studies of this phenomenon have been undertaken since the major national survey I conducted 10 years ago.

Maori and Indigenous Geographies [NB In some Maori cultures it is inappropriate to 'blow your own horn' and, in addition, my Maori colleagues are both too hard working and modest to feel comfortable spending time on creating this website. Accordingly, this website has been written by a Pakeha to acknowledge Dame Professor Evelyn Stokes and her Maori colleagues' achievements in creating a strong Maori Geography presence in the Department.] The Department of Geography is particularly strong in Maori Geography and is interested in geographies of other indigenous peoples. The approach recognizes that there is no one 'Maori Geography' and that Maori have distinct theoretical perspectives, methodologies and understandings that vary within and between different iwi, hapu, and whanau. You do not have to be Maori to specialize in Maori Geography, but those with sufficient Reo are strongly encouraged to enroll in geography papers designed specifically for Maori language speakers and as such there are a wider range of courses and research opportunities available to them. Maori Geography offers a useful adjunct for those specializing in Geographies of Development or studying in the School of Maori and Pacific Development. The 'Maori Lands and Communities' paper (GEOG219) is very strongly recommended for students pursuing Resources and Environmental Planning.
