Kia Ora and Kisses From New Zealand
by Wanda Moreau Judy Rabalais Introduction Task ... Conclusion
Introduction
New Zealand is a mixture of the past and the present, sometimes existing side by side. The Maori, the indigenous tribes, are people of distinct culture. The visitor is immediately surrounded by Maori influences and drawn into the background of this fascinating people. A study of the Maori is unique and interesting because of their history and continuing search for recognition in their homeland. You and your fellow travelers will explore the history, culture, geography and art of the Maori people of New Zealand. As you travel through the available sites, you will become aware of the fierce pride and tradition associated with this ancient people. In this quest for knowledge you will add to your research resources by using the Internet and computer software. During the course of this unit, travelers will greet each other with the traditional Maori salutation,"Kia ora", which means hello and/or goodbye.
Kia ora!

The Hocken Library
The Hocken Library is one of the foremost historical research libraries in New Zealand. It was established in 1910 when Dr Thomas Morland Hocken gave his private collection to the University of Otago, in trust for the people of New Zealand. The Library collects widely in relation to the history and culture of New Zealand, the Pacific and Antarctica, and has a special emphasis on the regions of Otago and Southland. The research collections include: archives, manuscripts, books, pamphlets, newspapers, maps, periodicals, paintings, drawings, photographs, music, and film. These collections are housed in secure stacks and can be consulted in the reading rooms and exhibition galleries at the Library. Top of page
Who was Dr Hocken?
The Hocken Library owes its existence to the vigorous collecting and subsequent generosity of a Dunedin doctor, Thomas Morland Hocken (1836-1910). Born in Lincolnshire, the son of a Wesleyan minister, Hocken qualified in medicine in 1856 and worked as a ship's surgeon between England and Australia until settling in Dunedin in 1862. As a doctor, and coroner for 22 years, T.M. Hocken became one of the city's best-known figures - 'a neat, dapper little man, with a short-clipped beard and dark lively eyes. Bustling, energetic, intensely industrious, he had a winning personality and infectious enthusiasm.'

Jordan - a tattooed man who lives alone at the base of his ancestral hill in a boat that was never launched - has his solitude broken by the arrival of two travellers: one who falls from the air, another who arrives following childhood tracks. Kingi, a distinguished Battle of Britain veteran, is journeying to keep a promise made on Crete half a century ago. Kataraina, a former prostitute, has left Sydney's Kings Cross and is finally travelling home. But their journeys and their lives change forever with the arrival of a young woman and her daughter ... This novel sets global conflict against a sensuous search for love. The action sweeps across fifty years, and ranges around the globe from New Zealand ...

An Area of Research Excellence

Print History is a new field concerned with all aspects of printing and publishing. It brings together the technological, economic, social and artistic factors that intervene between the writer and the printed text, in order to determine the extent to which print influences and is influenced by the culture it inhabits.
The University of Otago has a long tradition of bibliographical scholarship. Over the last five years the University has established itself as a centre for New Zealand Print Culture research, hosting a conference on print culture and collaborating on (1997). Research continues, focussing on a more comprehensive understanding of Otago print history as a basis for future regional studies. See publications
The current project aims to situate New Zealand's unique print history within global accounts of print culture. Specific topics include a history of the Otago Master Printers' Association and an examination of trade personnel and technological change in nineteenth-century Dunedin. See research
The Otago project, housed in the Department of English, includes Shef Rogers, Keith Maslen and Noel Waite.

The theme provides a forum for social scientists who use longitudinal studies to explain social and cultural dynamics and scholars interested in developing theoretical approaches to change over time. Through its extensive networks it also serves to pool ideas, benchmark against best practice, and develop leading-edge knowledge and skills. The research being carried out within this centre spans the full duration of human settlement and human achievement in the Southern Pacific. Because oceanic islands have long been seen as Nature's laboratories our several projects also share an interest in comparative and longitudinal analysis of social and cultural change, the dynamics of the relationship between centre and periphery, and the cognitive and social practices appropriate to transdisciplinary inquiry. We share a particular interest in the way in which unique societies and cultures have been formed, the interface between peoples and their environments, and the construction of distinctive community and national identities. We also share a commitment to using local evidence and data to address questions and issues of global significance.

You can quickly see WHAT’S NEW on this website. According to Google this is the most popular (most cited) website on an admittedly very narrow subject: The Chinese in New Zealand - with content biased towards the Chinese who have been in New Zealand for several generations. SITE HISTORY This website started out in 1998 as a whimsical exercise to use then-new web-based technology to re-publish articles originally in Chinese Voice This was a specialist section in Wellington’s City Voice newspaper now defunct which covered on-going aspects of the community, cultural and political life of the Chinese in Wellington, New Zealand. At the same time I took the opportunity to re-publish a few other articles which could be of historical interest. Since then, the site has grown considerably as I have added topical content about the Chinese community in New Zealand as it evolves – politically, socially and culturally. Generally the articles collected here have been "published" elsewhere, ie written and presented to an audience – speeches, conference papers, university papers, school term essays, letters to the editor, newspaper articles etc.
