As Polynesians discover and settle New Zealand, thought to be sometime between 950 and 1130 AD, the Moriori people are settling, possibly around the same time, the Chatham Islands, or Rekohu, a small group of islands off the coast of New Zealand. CULTURE Overview The culture industry employs 70,000 people, and accounts for 3·6% of the annual GNP. In 1997, cultural exports—13% of the total cultural trade—were worth US$264·7m. In that year, the largest five sectors of the culture industry were word and data processors (42·2% of total cultural trade) radio, TV, and VCR (20·7%); music-related goods (10·6%); cinema and photography (8·1%); and books and pamphlets (6·7%). In 1996, New Zealanders spent NZ$62m. on the theatre, ballet and concerts. In May 2000, the Government injected a one-off NZ$86m. into the arts. The Ministry for Culture and Heritage, established in 1991, administers funding totalling NZ$100m. to cultural organizations, including NZ On Air; the national museum; the national symphony orchestra; the Historic Places Trust; the Royal NZ Ballet; Creative New Zealand; the national film commission; the Traditional Maori Performing Arts Society; and the national film archive. Other cultural organizations are assisted by the Lottery Grants Board, whose funding is administered by the Department of Internal Affairs. Creative New Zealand (the operating name for the Arts Council), set up in 1994, receives 85% of its funding from the Lottery Grants Board. Between 1998–99, it allocated grants worth some NZ$20m. Censorship is governed by the Films, Videos, and Publications Classification Act 1993. It is managed by the Department of Internal Affairs, in conjunction with the police and customs.

Culture Next New Zealanders have made a profound impact in the areas of art, poetry, music, film, and architecture. Not only have the artists reached local recognition, but also gained worldwide apperception. New Kiwi self-confidence is revealed intensely in literature, film and theater. Opera diva Kiri Te Kanawa performs regularly nationally and internationally. Writers such as Witi Ihimaera, Albert Wendt, Patricia Grace, and Keri Hulme are also international figures. Fine Arts In the past, Kiwis were hostile towards art. In 1982, the McDougall Gallery in Christchurch planned to spend $10,000 on a painting by Colin McCahon, arguably the country's most significant and contentious painter, and this triggered ire among locals. At present, however, McCahon's paintings are auctioned at very high prices in many international collections.

Jewish Community in New Zealand
by Ronit Alon dscrrax@gsusgi2.gsu.edu 4 Jan 1994 I found Jews in NZ to be a rare commodity. In Grafton Hall, my dorm at varsity, I was the only one. And the only one most of my mates there had ever run into in their lives. (Which meant they didn't give a stuff, which was quite fine by me.) On Passover I carried my matzoh and kosher for passover food on a backpacking trip with the uni tramping club thru the deserts of Tongariro and have never felt more like one of my ancestors fleeing the Pharoh thru the Sinai. In Taupo I ran into a Maori friend my age who wore a Jewish star because her Mom's father was a Jew. There were many such Jews in history who intermarried, lots with Maoris, and lost touch with their own culture but spawned so many kiwi kids. Oh, and I never did find a decent bagel in NZ. Vic Park market sold some that tasted more like regular bread. Anyone found any good ones?

New Zealand
Introduction New Zealand has a population of slightly less than 4 million people with most living in the key cities. The large majority of the population (89%) has a European heritage, primarily English. Therefore, English is the predominant language and Christianity the largest religion. The Maori, a Polynesian people who were the earliest inhabitants of New Zealand make up the remaining population. There is little racial tension between the Maori and the predominately European/English people. Though Maori and Europeans freely intermarry and have similar ways of life, each maintains its identity, so social and cultural aspects remain distinct for each group. The standard of living is high, and their literacy rate is 100%. The state provides extensive social services for the welfare of its citizens, and has one of the most comprehensive health care programs in the world. Adding to their quality of life is the nation's geographic location and size. No one is greater than 75 miles from the ocean and the climate that encourages outdoor activities. This nation actively participates in hiking, fishing, sailing, and competitive sports. Although New Zealand is often mentioned in the same sentence with Australia, New Zealanders do not appreciate this mutual reference, as they are an independent nation.

"God Defend New Zealand"
(National Anthem)
The New Zealand Symphony Orchestra kindly recorded a performance of the National Anthem especially for the New Zealand Information Home Page . Click the image at the start of the paragraph to hear it. I would like to express my extreme gratitude to those who made it possible:
  • Kenneth Young Conductor in Residence of the NZSO.
  • Michael Fine - Grammy-winning record producer from Koch International Records.
  • Sam Negri - Recording engineer
  • Dale Gold - Principal Double Bassist for the NZSO, and the prime motivator in making this recording possible.
  • and especially ... The Players of the NZSO - who donated their services at the end of an extremely difficult and tiring recording session.
God Defend New Zealand
Words by Thomas Bracken, music by John J. Woods
Music for the first verse follows.

God of nations! at Thy feet
In the bonds of love we meet,
Hear our voices, we entreat,
God defend our Free Land.
Guard Pacific's triple star,
From the shafts of strife and war,
Make her praises heard afar
