http://www.zealand.org.nz/euro2a.htm
Art History, NZ, page 1 V arious artists visited New Zealand with the explorers like Tasman, Cook, and d'Urville, and their work was essentially of a practical nature - they were here to record - and their recordings were subservient to the "scientific attitude" of the times. They were draftsmen. William Hodges (image of " Resolution " above) was the most accomplished artist to visit New Zealand, arriving on Cook's second Pacific voyage. His talents can be seen, when in 1773, the " Resolution " was moored in Dusky Sound and he allowed the essence of Romanticism to direct his depiction of a Maori family in the wild of the fiord to become unatmed Nature hosting the Noble Savage. Because Hodges (above) was less attentive to the required scientific aspects, the official artist on Cook's third voyage was John Webber - who was specifically instructed to be more particular with his factual details. C ircumstances began to change when in October 1827, "the wandering artist" Augustus Earle, decided on an extended stay in Northland. His careful observations (image below) in watercolour show the Maori as a proudly independant race living in harmony with a stirring natural environment.

Country Info New Zealand Introduction New Zealand General Data New Zealand Maps New Zealand Culture ... New Zealand Time and Date New Zealand Culture Back to Top The earliest cultural tradition in New Zealand was that of the Maori. The literature consisted of history, tales, poems, and myths handed down by oral tradition. The indigenous art of New Zealand is also Maori. European settlers, particularly the English, brought with them their own traditions, which came to dominate the cultural life of the country. Since the 1950s significant numbers of Pacific Islanders, particularly Polynesians, have contributed to a growing ethnic diversity in New Zealand. More recently, greater diversity has been fostered by increased immigration from Asia since the mid-1980s. European cultural life has progressed rapidly since the early 20th century. Numerous writers were active in the late 19th century, the most successful of whom were historians, such as William Pember Reeves, and ethnologists, including S. Percy Smith and Elsdon Best. The work of the first genuinely original writers of fiction, the short-story writer Katherine Mansfield and the poet R.A.K. Mason, did not appear until the 1920s. During the harsh years of the Great Depression of the 1930s a group of poets appeared and established a national tradition of writing. Although influenced by contemporary English literature—T.S. Eliot and W.H. Auden were greatly respected—they wrote about their New Zealand experience. The most notable member of this group was Allen Curnow. A.R.D. Fairburn, Denis Glover, and Charles Brasch were other major poets. At the same time Frank Sargeson began writing the superb stories in New Zealand vernacular for which he became well known.

    New Zealand History
New Zealand was originally settled in the 1100s by the Maoris (pronounced MAU-rees ), who called it Aotearoa (Land of the Long White Cloud). A tradition of oral history recounts how 10 great canoes arrived from an island near Tahiti to populate the islands. For more than 500 years Maori life went untouched by the outside world. They had spectacular zigzag tattoos; developed a culture of fishing, hunting and gathering. Rival groups warred with one another, and the battles often resulted in the losers being eaten or enslaved by the victors. The next epoch in the islands' history opened in 1642, when the Dutch explorer Abel van Tasman sighted the land and called it Niuew Zeeland. He charted part of the coastline but left without officially claiming it. Some 130 years later Capt. James Cook claimed the islands for the British throne. He circumnavigated both main islands, which he mapped with an accuracy that is still admired (and used) today. However, it wasn't until the 1830s that European settlement began in earnest. Conflict between the Maoris and the British settlers ensued until 1840, when a conditional peace was established with the Treaty of Waitangi. Another, bloodier war was fought in the early 1860s and ended with the uneasy coexistence that persists to this day.

Maori & New Zealand culture: The Maori are thought to have migrated to New Zealand (Aotearoa) in several waves around 950 A.D. from the island of Hawaiiki. The name "Aotearoa" translates to "land of the long white cloud". Today Maori make up 15% of the population in New Zealand. The maori heritage of New Zealand is very important and is illustrated by the large number of place names with maori origins. Maori culture is known for both their traditional and contemporary art. These include traditional maori carving, weaving and kapa haka (group performances) as well as the contemporary art, film, poetry, theatre, and hip-hop. Typical maori greetings are:
    • Kia ora - Hello Kia ora tatou - Hello everyone Haere mai - Welcome Tena koutou - Greeting to you all Kei te pehea koe? - How's it going? Kei te pai - Good Haere ra - Farewell Ka kite ano - Until I see you again

    Dear Traveler:
I emigrated to New Zealand from the U.S. in 1984 seeking peace and serenity, which I found here in huge measure. This peace and serenity still abound on the South Island, where I still happily live and work. Since New Zealand Travelers' founding in 1986, we have served over 1,300 guests, and now I am glad to be able to share with you the true magic that I have discovered living in New Zealand all these years.
Head Guide Jo Kemp and I lead all our tours. Our groups are small and decidedly non-touristy, and the tours are more like an adult family outing than a commercial excursion. We stay off the beaten path (often on dirt roads unfrequented by tourists), introduce you to our Kiwi friends, and give you intimate back-country adventures far from the crowded tourist destinations. Very good food and drink too, and some fantastically beautiful treks. In my 20 years here, I've learned where to go and where not to go. You will appreciate that!
If you are looking for a respite from today's restless world atmosphere, you could hardly find a better place than right here with us. This year, entranced by the magnificent scenery in Lord of the Rings, many travelers are making plans to experience our lovely countryside for themselves. The increase in popularity has inspired a plethora of activities and accommodation offerings. As you might imagine, some of these are good, and some are just awful. Even a seasoned traveler might have difficulty in making worthwhile choices and avoiding serious mistakes of time and money. We've been conducting South Island tours for 18 years, and this can work to your considerable benefit.
