This trip has been in the cards for a long time. My friends Wes, Tom and I started talking about it two years ago. We postponed it several times for various reasons. I ordered the travel award from Continental Airlines last summer. When I got up the morning of April 9, it was hard to believe I was actually going to fly to Australia. (Wes and Tom flew from Houston, Texas, on United. We met up in Sydney the morning of April 11.) As usual, my friendly cab driver, Diane K., who is able to find my well hidden address even at 6 AM, picked me up on time to get to SFO well before my flight. Renita, the very friendly Alaska Airlines ticketing agent, helped me checked my bags through to Sydney. I asked her about an upgrade to LAX, as my reward was for first class travel except for the short SFO-LAX leg. Alaska has a great feature that allows you to upgrade a short flight by paying them $40 at check in time. (You can also upgrade longer flights by paying more.) She said Alaska's rules didn't allow her to help me at ticketing because it was reward travel, but she would call ahead to the gate to see if they could do anything for me as there was plenty of room up front.

@import url(/includes/style-modern.css); Zoo Animals Animal Habitats Islands in Isolation Forests will Flourish ... Islands of Isolation Islands in Isolation is one of three conservation themes that Wellington Zoo plans to develop to help promote the need for the sustainable use of New Zealand's natural resources and a balance between humans and nature. This theme will explain the consequences of wildlife evolving in isolation, using New Zealand, Australia and Madagascar as examples. New Zealand and Madagascar have remarkable similarities in evolutionary terms. The wildlife in both countries evolved almost entirely from a single type of animal: birds in New Zealand and lemurs (a primate) in Madagascar. These species evolved to occupy all the available niches in their ecosystem. In other parts of the world these niches were filled by mammals: rodents, foxes, cats and badgers. In New Zealand these places were filled by our large number of flightless birds. The kiwi is a perfect example, having many mammal characteristics.

It took 13 and we arrived in Brisbane just in time to book a room at the Holiday Inn and rush to dinner 15 minutes before the restaurant closed. We came to Brisbane just to go to the Australia Zoo, home of the Crocodile Hunter, Steve Irwin and his wife Terri. It's just a short drive north of Brisbane. Although we didn't get to see him (we didn't really expect to), we had a great time seeing their collection of crocs, alligators, poisonous snakes, and various other animals you never get to see in the Americas such as a wombat and a tasmanian devil. There was a wall of three huge panels of clippings and photos to show you how famous Steve is around the world. croczoo01.jpg

  • Cairns Wellington Wellington, the capitol city of New Zealand, is a really compact city and you can drive from top to bottom and up another side in scant minutes. There's not much level ground except near the wharfs, so this town is mostly on hills like San Francisco. But a lot of the winding roads going up to the residential areas are skinny 1.5-car-width roads and lots of switchbacks. Lots of opportunities to run into someone coming the opposite way. They call Wellington the Windy City and it's true: it's blowing almost all the time. The breeze appears to come from the south and blow into the harbor, but it rips through the hills as well. Who needs a dryer for your clothes when you can just hang it outside! One of the first things we did was visit the Old St. Paul's Church downtown, built from local timbers in the late 1800s. Very pretty, done in English Gothic style. Also, some shots from around town:
