2004 MAUI TRADE DOLLAR FEATURES TURTLE AND TROPICAL FISH
Maui, known as the Valley Isle, is the second largest of the Hawaiian Islands. Its gorgeous scenery, beautiful tropical beaches and numerous cultural activities, has long made it a popular destination with tourists. Each year, the Maui Chamber of Commerce issues a trade dollar. The 39mm copper-nickel token is good for one dollar at participating merchants throughout the island during the year it is issued. As might be expected, most of the dollars are kept by tourists as souvenirs rather than being redeemed, which raises funds for educational projects on the island. The attractive 2004 Maui Trade Dollar features a sea turtle swimming among tropical fish. A group of orchids also graces the coin. It is an attractive coin from this popular tropical paradise.

We began our trip in the Auckland area, then flew down to Queenstown in South Island, hiring a car and driving back up the west coast to catch the ferry back to Wellington, where we spent our last few days.
Our trip also included several days in Indonesia, so I can't give direct flight details from Texas. On the return home we flew New Zealand Airways to Los Angeles and Continental to Houston.

Australian reptile park
The Australian reptile park Web site in part provides the opportunity to visit the park in Somersby, New South Wales, Australia remotely. Photographs and information about animals in the park are available as well as the usual details about visiting. The name of the park is slightly misleading because it also has some birds, mammals and spiders. Not all the species are Australian and some of the deadliest spiders are from other places, like the goliath bird-eater from South America. Research into antivenoms is carried out at the park and venoms are sold. The park was founded in 1948 by Eric Worrell, author of many books on Australian natural history, and was almost totally destroyed by a fire in 2000 which killed most of the animals. A collision between the airplanes was averted after inboard safety equipment warned the Air New Zealand crew that the Qantas jet was climbing into their air space off the coast of Irian Jaya west of Papua New Guinea on March 22. The two Boeing 767s were hurtling toward each other at a combined speed of about 1,740 km/h, pilots told New Zealand's Civil Aviation Authority.

Melbourne, Australia's second largest city, is a rail and air hub and financial and commercial center. Wool and raw and processed agricultural goods are exported. The city is heavily industrialized; industries include shipbuilding and the manufacture of farm machinery, textiles, and electrical goods. Included in the Melbourne urban agglomeration are many coastal resorts. Settled in 1835, it was named (1837) for Lord Melbourne , the British prime minister. From 1901 to 1927 the city was the seat of the Australian federal government. The population, once primarily British, has changed since World War II with immigration from E and S Europe and, more recently, Asia. Melbourne has campuses of several universities, including the Univ. of Melbourne (1853), Monash Univ. (1958), and La Trobe Univ. (1964). Melbourne Technical College, the Australian Ballet School, the National Gallery of Victoria, the Melbourne Museum, and the galleries and theaters of the Victorian Arts Centre also are in the city. Melbourne is the seat of Roman Catholic and Anglican archbishops. Attractive parks, including the notable Royal Botanic Gardens and Melbourne Zoo; the bustling Queen Victoria Market; and the cultural and commercial Federation Square complex draw both tourists and residents. The Melbourne Cup horse race is run annually at Flemington Racecourse, and the city hosts a Formula One Grand Prix race. Melbourne was the site of the 1956 summer Olympic games.

South Korean groups protest abuse of Chinese immigrant workers The company alleges the workers were employed at its plant in Shandong, China and were brought to South Korea to receive job training. A spokesman for the civic groups disputed the claim, saying the workers were directly recruited by a Korean employment agency. He said that each worker had to pay about 5 million to 8 million won ($3,700 to $6,000) to the agency and a deposit of more than 10 million won. The sum is equal to the wages received by an average Chinese worker over five years.
