New Zealand so far has been very hassle-free. This hostel is packed with lots of great features (bars, café, movie rooms, TV rooms etc.), although the rooms are a bit sterile and the lift appears to be very close to death trap classification. I left the Pink House hostel in Sydney at 4am to get the bus to the airport. Tonight will hopefully be the first decent night's sleep I've gotten since Melbourne. My room was pretty dodgy last night. Beer cans everywhere, as well as two poms who smoked joints back-to-back while they exchanged stories about taking various illegal substances they'd indulged in around King's Cross. Generally, the mood of the room was caught permanently in that moment in the early morning when the pot has run out, and everyone's coming down. Paranoia, antisocial and eerily quiet between the odd trivial remarks. Understandably I didn't spend a lot of time in there. The movie room was a very good alternative - warm, friendly and of course entertaining. The Dutch couple whose dorm I stayed in previously were in there, as well as some girls from Newcastle who thoughtfully let me inside the hostel very red-eyed at 7am. They'd been in Sydney a few weeks, previously through China, Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand. Asked them a lot of questions about Vietnam and Cambodia and got some good information off them. They had apparently no hassles at all up there which is encouraging to hear, as I'd like to go up there at some point.

This update includes the provisional programme and some additional new information. It also includes pricing details and registration forms, which are being kept on the web until the conclusion of the Forum for the convenience of any delegates who may wish to refer back to them. The Australia New Zealand Climate Forum is a gathering of researchers and other people working in climate and associated areas. It is held usually every year, at different sites around Australia and New Zealand. This year, for the first time, the Forum will be in Western Australia, where it will be hosted by a number of organisations keenly active in climate and its applications. The theme of the Forum is UNDERSTANDING CLIMATE AND ITS REGIONAL IMPACTS Including
  • Regional climate variability Impacts on primary industry Impacts on other industry Impacts on water resources Impacts on the broader environment
Participation is certainly not limited to Australians and New Zealanders or to people working in those countries. Input on relevant work from elsewhere in the Indian and Pacific Ocean regions is particularly welcome. The Forum traditionally provides a valuable opportunity for an exchange of information on a wide range of climate-related work. There is a strong emphasis on work in progress as well as recently completed work.

New Zealand's kiwi may face extinction
The number of kiwis in New Zealand has dropped December 31, 1997 Web posted at: 10:49 p.m. EST (0349 GMT) AUCKLAND, New Zealand (AP) The bird symbolizing New Zealand the North Island brown kiwi may be headed for extinction, threatened by predators, shrinking habitats and insufficient preservation funding. In the past 15 years, the North Island brown kiwi population has dropped from about 70,000 to 30,000, according to a field study by scientist John McLennan of Landcare Research, published Wednesday. More importantly, only 5 percent of North Island brown kiwi chicks born each year make it to adulthood, the study says. Unless 20 percent survive, the population will continue its downward spin toward extinction, scientists say. "We can debate when they are going to reach that point," McLennan said. "There is absolutely no debate that they are going to get there unless they are helped." Stoats, also known as ermine, head the list of kiwi predators, killing chicks within a month of their leaving the nest, McLennan said. Ferrets were also beginning to kill off remaining pockets of kiwi in Northland. The real problem, McLennan said, lies in finding funding for the remedies scientists already have, or for providing more habitat area.

Tiny kiwi makes debut at Australian zoo
September 26, 1997
Web posted at: 10:34 p.m. EDT (0234 GMT) SYDNEY, Australia (CNN) Zookeepers in Australia are hailing the arrival of a new kiwi chick, the first born there in captivity in 26 years. Kiwis are shy, nocturnal birds. They are unusual in that the female lays an egg almost a quarter of her size, and it is then incubated by the male. In the wild, kiwis are under threat from predators and decreasing habitat. The most recent success in kiwi captive breeding, at the Taronga Zoo, was the result of new techniques to incubate the egg. The tiny bird, hatched a few weeks ago, is reported to be fit and growing, though it will be several months before zookeepers will know its sex.

Animal and Animal Product Risk Analyses
A risk analysis is a formal approach for the identification, assessment, management and communication of risk. It forms the basis for making many decisions affecting agricultural trade.
New Risk Analysis Handbook Available
The first handbook of its kind on how to carry out risk analyses for animals and animal products traded internationally can now be ordered through MAF . The book addresses what has been a significant knowledge gap for those responsible for applying scientific analyses to risk in international trade. This page contains links to risk analyses regarding animals and animal products and the review of submissions received for each analysis. Also listed are articles relating to risk analysis.

... About Orana Park
THE FIRST 10 YEARS How It All Began The idea for Orana Wildlife Park began when a New Brighton resident, Neville Jemmett, suggested to the Christchurch City Council that a zoo should built on the recently completed land-fill dump at Bexley. Naturally enough, the concept of having a new zoo in Christchurch was widely reported by the news media and soon caught the imagination of the public. The South Island Zoological Society was formed in July 1970, and in a matter of weeks, had grown from the original eight founding members to over one hundred. A number of public meetings were held to debate the concept behind a modern zoological park, as well as to consider the funding and ongoing support the new project would require. It was soon established that the new venture would be an open range wildlife park with the design reflecting a feeling of the animal's natural habitat. The site at Bexley proved totally unsuited for the construction of such a wildlife park, but it wasn't long before a new site was proposed on McLeans Island, on land to be leased from the North Canterbury Catchment Board. Right - Committee views the Orana Park Site for the first time, September 1970.

The Australian and New Zealand Conservation Laboratories (ANZCoL) represent an international collaboration between Macquarie University, Sydney, Australia and Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand . The main aims of ANZCoL are to offer graduate training and promote research into world conservation issues by studying the unique organisms and environments of the two countries. Research strengths encompass a comprehensive range of contemporary biology, from molecular biology and genetics, to ecology, marine biology, and natural history. These are all studied in the context of wildlife research and conservation practice in the two countries.
A unique Masters program offered jointly by Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand, and Macquarie University, Sydney, Australia is now available. The Master of Conservation Biology (MConBio) is taken in two five months' blocks at each university. The MConBio is a coursework program designed both for international and local students who wish to gain an understanding of the problems faced and the techniques used by Australasian conservation scientists and managers. The terrestrial and marine environments encompassed by the two countries also enable comprehensive study of the main international issues in conservation. The program at Victoria begins with a three-week field course
