Nonprofit Works to Close the Digital Divide March 2000 articles
By Dan Beauchemin As it becomes increasingly apparent that knowledge of computers, software, and the Internet will be essential to success in the coming century, schools are placing more emphasis on computers in the classroom. But even with the price of computers dropping, they are common only in schools serving higher-income areas. Too often, inner-city schools can't even afford books and school supplies, let alone computers, and their students fall farther and father behind in the race to build skills and experience in the wired world. Enter Computers for Youth, a Manhattan-based non-profit organization. Founded in 1997, Computers for Youth is taking action to help disadvantaged schools and students gain the invaluable computer skills they will need. Its executive director, Elisabeth Stock, has plenty of experience broadening the electronic horizons of the disadvantaged: Before joining Computers for Youth in February 1999, Stock helped build the Nationwide Computers for Learning Program, which allowed federal agencies to donate surplus computers to needy schools. Computers for Youth has two main initiatives: Project Patchwork and Project Enhance. Project Patchwork focuses on putting computers into homes of needy students and getting both parents and kids accustomed to their use. Each home receives a personal computer, software, email accounts for family members, and Internet service for a trial period. Technical support is provided via telephone or email. Project Patchwork also provides a virtual community where the students can teach parents skills, help build a family budget, write a résumé, or build a home page. Community members can chat with others online.

Vo-Tech Students Help Bridge The Digital Divide April 27, 2000
A team of vocational technology students in New York City is helping bridge the digital divide. The vo-tech students are part of an innovative program, called Computers for Youth (CFY), that aims to bring technology to inner-city youths by giving them a computer for their home.
Integral Part of Program The vo-tech students will work through partnerships to deliver some of the pieces that help inner-city youths learn to effectively use technology. Computers are donated by New York area businesses and are checked, rehabilitated and configured by vo-tech students. The students are part of a cooperative program, in which juniors and seniors in high schools across the city participate in alternating weeks of school study and off-site internships.
Expensive To Fix Old Computers In contrast, the efforts of vo-tech students in New York mean that CFY computers are ready to use when they arrive in schools and homes with little additional work required. In the internship, students progress from learning basic computer mechanics to doing minor repairs on computers that will be used in schools. Eventually, students can work their way up to more sophisticated debugging and software reconfiguration to help families use the computers easily and immediately.

Kids get booked Day of arrests as violence is par for course at schools By YOAV GONEN, ELIZABETH HAYS and CELESTE KATZ
DAILY NEWS WRITERS Students nabbed during brawl yesterday at William Grady High School are taken away in handcuffs. New York turned into a blackboard jungle yesterday as cops made 17 arrests in and around city schools - less than a week after Mayor Bloomberg's crackdown on classroom mayhem. In Brooklyn, an all-out brawl erupted in a high school cafeteria. In the Bronx, a 15-year-old boy allegedly sent three safety officers to the hospital. In Chelsea, two teenage girls were charged with assaulting a teacher. And in Harlem, gunfire erupted outside a grammar school just before classes began, sending kids, parents and teachers scurrying for cover. Authorities were probing a fifth possible incident, as an Education Department spokeswoman said only that officials were still working "to make our schools safer." Last week, Bloomberg - who recently conceded his administration had done "a lousy job" on school discipline - sent cops into a dozen troubled schools to kick off a systemwide no-tolerance-for-violence crackdown. Students at Grady Vocational High School in Brooklyn apparently did not get the message. A dozen students - boys ages 14 to 17 - from the Coney Island school were arrested after a 12:45 p.m. melee. A police officer who helped break up the brawl was taken to Coney Island Hospital with a sprained ankle, officials said.

At present, the "Power Lunch" serves public school children in grades 1 through 5. In some cases, where the school itself extends through the 8th grade and when the reading pairs want to stay together, "Power Lunch" can continue on until high school. Our volunteers come from a variety of organizations investment banks, law firms, the Junior League, Senior Citizen centers, hospitals, colleges and universities, etc. The focus in all of our sites is literacy, and, more broadly the world of ideas and the expression of ideas. The goal of "Power Lunch" is to help children learn to love reading, to see reading as the means to an end (the "end" being fun, adventure and friendship)instead of just a skill to be mastered in school, and, ultimately, to help children develop the skills and Resources: The Everybody Wins! staff coordinates and manages all aspects of "Power Lunch" for the volunteers as well as the schools, including recruiting volunteers, matching students, coordinating reading days, overseeing the reading in progress, and maintianing all communications.

PRESS RELEASES
New York State to Get Almost $7 million for Needs of New York Students and Workers
FOR RELEASE:
September 25, 2001 Contact: Public Affairs
$5 million for vocational rehabilitation and $1.7 million for schools are on their way to the State of New York to address the impacts of the terrorist attacks
U.S. Secretary of Education Rod Paige announced today that the U.S. Department of Education will provide $5 million in immediate assistance from its Rehabilitation Services Administration to New York State in order to help those who have suffered disabling mental and physical injuries as a result of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center. At the same time, Paige announced the details of a $1.7 million grant to New York State to meet the needs of New York school districts whose students and teachers have suffered directly as a result of the terrorist attacks. "As we offer assistance to New Yorkers in getting back to work, we confront a great need among those who have suffered disabling injuries and emotional trauma as a direct result of the attacks," Paige said. "There are also individuals with existing physical disabilities whose support programs and services have been disrupted due to the widespread damage to downtown Manhattan. They will all need extra help in the coming months, and this substantial grant will help to meet those needs."

SWOT ANALYSIS: A MANAGEMENT TOOL FOR INITIATING NEW PROGRAMS IN VOCATIONAL SCHOOLS

Iowa State University
ABSTRACT The SWOT ( S trengths, W eaknesses, O pportunities, and T hreats) analysis has been a useful tool for industry. This article proposes the application of the SWOT tool for use as a decision-making aid as new vocational programs are planned. The process of utilizing the SWOT approach requires an internal survey of strengths and weaknesses of the program and an external survey of threats and opportunities. Structured internal and external examinations are unique in the world of curriculum planning and development. Educational examples using the SWOT analysis are provided by the authors. It is a useful way of examining current environmnetal conditions around program offerings. An insight into the wide range of the potential applications of SWOT is also an intended outcome of this paper. SWOT ANALYSIS: A MANAGEMENT TOOL FOR INITIATING NEW PROGRAMS IN VOCATIONAL SCHOOLS The external environment has a profound impact on educational institutions. During this final decade of the twentieth century, America's institutions, economy, society, political structures, and even individual lifestyles are poised for new changes. Recent shifts from an industrial to an information-based society and from a manufacturing to a service-oriented economy has significantly impacted the demands made on vocational program offerings (

May 6-7, 1999 A Trip Report
Overview The American Youth Policy Forum field trip to New York City included visits to four very different secondary schoolseach in its own way attempting to provide a high quality middle or high school education responsive to the needs of young people and the community. Two of the schools Central Park East Secondary School and the High School of Economics and Finance have been recognized by the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Vocational and Adult Education, as a New American High School and a New Urban American High School , respectively. A third high school, the Bread and Roses Integrated Arts High School is a relatively new school founded by teachers from Crossroads Middle School in District 3, with a focus on arts and social justice. The final visit was to Washington Heights Intermediate School 218 The purpose of the field trip was to:
