Declaration of Candidacy
Is this your last semester? Then you need to file a Declaration of Candidacy for a Graduate Degree form. You should complete this form in the semester in which you expect to receive a graduate degree. Declaration is valid for one semester only. If you do not graduate, another Declaration should be submitted the following semester. Please familiarize yourself with the policies and deadlines for degree completion. In particular, you should be aware that grades for courses required for the degree cannot be changed after the degree is conferred; a grade of "Incomplete" must be completed before the degree is awarded. Also, you must be continuously registered each fall and spring semester until you are awarded your degree. You must register during summer if that is the semester you will complete your degree requirements. Declaration of Candidacy forms can be completed on-line here Top of page
Comprehensive Examinations/Final Projects
You should check with your faculty adviser for details on requirements for degree completion. Different programs have different requirements and they may vary from year to year. Comprehensive examinations, oral examinations, position papers, and portfolios are typically completed during the last semester of your degree program (usually excluding summer).

Teacher Certification Programs for Fordham Undergraduate Students
The ITE undergraduate certification programs are based on a reflective practitioner model with cohorts of students forming communities for reflection on learning and teaching. Each cohort progresses through a sequence of coordinated courses and field experiences designed to link theory and practice. Students who complete the programs are highly qualified teachers who respect individuals in a multicultural society; excel in academic disciplines; acquire a broad knowledge base; learn in meaningful contexts; become reflective practitioners; and engage in life-long learning.
Admissions Requirements for the Elementary or Secondary Certification Programs
There are two stages of admission to the teacher certification programs. The first is a preliminary declaration of interest which results in course guidance and an initial, exploratory field experience in schools. The second stage is the formal application to the program which results in admitted students taking the sequence of courses required for teacher certification, including student teaching. To declare interest and fulfill the preliminary requirements for the elementary or secondary certification program, students must:

Program Summary
I. Program in Spanish, Mathematics and Science.
Scholars participate in an intensive full-time 7-week summer program for TOP Scholars in their subject area that begins in June 2004 and ends in early August 2004. During the summer program, scholars participate in specially-designed courses on CUNY campuses and also get practical experience in New York City schools, working with students. Scholars get advisement and assistance in finding teaching positions with the New York City Public Schools beginning in September 2004. Scholars who successfully complete the summer program receive a stipend of $3,000 and earn between six and twelve credits toward their master's degree. Tuition is waived. In order to remain in the program, Scholars must pass two New York State Teacher Certification Examinations before September 2004: the Liberal Arts and Science Test (LAST) and the appropriate Content Specialty Test (CST) in the subject they will be teaching. The college where they are enrolled will then recommend them to New York State for alternative certification. During the 2004-2005 school year, Scholars teach full time in New York City schools and take courses at CUNY after school toward their master's degree. Scholars are paid the appropriate teacher salary by the New York City Department of Education. Scholars also receive mentoring from a college liaison and from an experienced teacher at their school. At the end of the school year, Scholars earn an AmeriCorps Education Award worth $4,725 that can be used to pay their CUNY tuition and fees. Unused parts of the award can be used to pay off student loans or saved for future education expenses.
