Health The Perils of Pesticide New York State Attorney General's Office warns "Urban Children at Risk" Because of Widespread Pesticide Use in Public Housing, Schools and Parks By Michele Leight For those who remember Meryl Streep in "Silkwood," and more recently "Erin Brokovitch," for which Julia Roberts received an Oscar, and for anyone concerned about the corrosive effects of chemicals on the environment, in the air, in food and most crucially on our children, a report published August 20, 2002 by the New York State Attorney General's Environmental Protection Bureau is a wake-up call for all those who think that ethics and morality rule when it comes to the manufacture and sale of chemical pesticides. The report was entitled "Pest Control in Public Housing, Schools and Parks: Urban Children at Risk," and was put together by Peter Lehner, the bureau chief of the Environmental Protection Bureau of the New York State Attorney General's Office and authored by Michael H. Surgan, Phd., chief scientist, Thomas Congdon, policy analyst, and Christine Primi, Stephanie Lamster and Jennifer Louise-Jacques, science aides of the Environmental Protection Bureau of the Attorney General's office. In the report's foreword, Peter J. Landrigan, M.D., M.Sc., Professor and Chair, Department of Community and Preventive Medicine, Director, Center of Children's Health and Environment, Mount Sinai School of Medicine, notes the following:

    E. V. Kontorovich email article respond to article print article N F As for the schools that do get built, cracked floors, slanted walls, and temperamental heating are common. P.S. 20 in Queens promptly sank into the landfill the SCA built it on, delaying its opening three years; P.S. 43—the infamous floating school—flooded with 400,000 gallons of seawater. Repairs don’t go any better: in 1996, investigators found that a majority of recently renovated schools suffered serious flaws. In Manhattan’s P.S. 158, SCA "repairs" left behind broken intercoms, a new air-conditioning system that refused to work, and floors with missing tiles. In George Washington High School, a leaky ceiling has collapsed three times over the past four years. I Several outside inspectors have taken the SCA to task for lax safety, but the authority invariably shrugs off such criticism. A 1994 study by the Senate Committee on Investigations deemed the authority’s projects "unsafe," and a mayoral commission warned in 1996 that "imminent calamity is at our door." Yet the SCA flatly denies the charges, or, on the rare occasions when it admits a mistake, claims to have addressed it promptly. But auditors question those claims—with good reason. Most recently, inspecting 150 work sites after the P.S. 131 accident, safety inspectors discovered 38 violations at 29 of them, including nine where contractors did exterior work without sidewalk sheds.

Teens Mark Columbine Anniversary by Spreading Non-Violent Message
April 15, 2004 : (Baton Rouge) Attorney General Charles C. Foti, Jr. says a group of Louisiana students are making good on a promise to share their experiences about establishing a statewide student safety coalition with students from New York City schools. The students travel to New York on Monday, April 19th and return Friday, April 23rd.
The Louisiana Attorney General’s Student Safety Coalition was invited to conduct a training workshop for inner city students on how to establish a similar coalition in New York City schools. The invitation came from Felicia Watson, Director of Public Relations for the New York School Safety Center after she and the coalition attended a National Crime Prevention Conference forum in November 2003. Students felt that the five-year anniversary of the Columbine school shootings would be a most appropriate time to talk about taking a pro-active stance against school violence.
“The Coalition has only been in existence for about two years and students have made tremendous progress,” stated Attorney General Foti. “It started out as a simple desire on their part to have a safe, weapons-free, drug-free school campus and now it is a sharing and teaching experience they hope will catch on.”

With a new investigation threatening to cost New York City schools hundreds of millions of dollars in repayments, fines and penalties, US Senator Chuck Schumer today called on the Department of Justice (DOJ) not to target New York City's financially-strapped school districts. DOJ is currently investigating whether schools across New York committed technical errors while filing reimbursement claims with a Medicaid program that provides services like speech and physical therapy to special needs students. The probe could ultimately force school districts in New York City to pay back a sizeable portion of the $1.6 billion received in federal reimbursements, plus millions more in penalties and fines.
