Region History
In a world filled with great promise, belief in the infinite possibilities of the human spirit animates the American Friends Service Committee, a practical expression of the faith of the Religious Society of Friends. COMMUNITY OUTREACH JUMP START NEW YORK BasketBall City Background
Jump Start is a Not-for-Profit organization dedicated to improving the lives of New York City's young people, focusing primarily on disadvantaged and minority youth. In order to improve the lives of these at-risk youth, Jump Start provides exciting, educational programs for young men and women throughout the New York City area. Jump Start was founded in 1998. Its mission is to use athletics and recreation as a means to improve the lives of young people through involvement in community service, life-skills building and leadership training. By taking advantage of the popularity of sports among today's youth, Jump Start has given hundreds of young people the opportunity to participate in positive and valuable educational activities.

The first installment of a three-year, $1,102,500 grant that will fund challenge grants to expand School-Based Mentoring programs in 10 locations, including Atlanta, Cleveland, Dallas and Tampa. School-Based Mentoring brings adult mentors into the schools during the school day. Big Brothers Big Sisters of New York City
Funding for Big Brothers Big Sisters' Workplace Mentoring Program , which matches volunteers from local corporations with at-risk children. More than 600 volunteers from 30 companies help children improve academic achievement and life skills.
The final installment of a three-year, $1.3 million grant to fund the national expansion of after-school learning centers in 15 locations that include Kansas City, MO; Phoenix; Pittsburgh; San Diego; and Lafayette, LA. Based on a successful model funded by the Foundation in 1998, learning centers provide computer labs and a curriculum that bolsters in-school learning.
