The IU Soul Revue, a performance ensemble at Indiana University Bloomington, is on tour and will perform this week in New York, Buffalo and Detroit. The tour includes two performances that are open to the public. Founded in 1971, the IU Soul Revue is one of three performance ensembles of IU's African American Arts Institute. Under director Tyron Cooper, the IU Soul Revue has become noted for its high energy, impeccable musicianship and soulful delivery. The concerts will feature a wide range of selections from the group's repertoire of traditional rhythm and blues, soul, funk and contemporary black popular music styles. The talents of the IU Soul Revue have not gone unnoticed. Michael J. Powell, producer of popular recording artists such as Anita Baker and Patti LaBelle, said of the ensemble, "I was pleasantly surprised at the cohesion of talent, professionalism and quality centered within the Soul Revue." "The tour is an excellent opportunity to extend the Soul Revue's music to other communities, as well as to involve alumni and friends who are now located in these areas," said Charles Sykes, director of IUB's African American Arts Institute.

The Techno-Savvy, Book-Rich Media Center by Jamie McKenzie about author This article first appeared in the November/December 2003 issue of Library Media Connection Grand Prairie ISD student exploring questions from her wonder box. It is time to replace techno-lust with techno-savvy! I. Back from the Brink of Digital Distress Back before the Net came to schools, many of us had high hopes for digital library additions. We grabbed eagerly for articles about virtual libraries and some of us dreamed of abundance and digital riches unmatched by our print collections. Some leaders were so anxious to network schools and fill classrooms with digital devices that we could fairly accuse them of techno-lust. A decade later the after-taste is a bitter-sweet mixture of delight and disappointment. Digital abundance often turned to glut and the promised richness often proved more cloying than enlightening. With the defrocking of dotcom forecasters and their sales pitches for digital schools and high bandwidth learning, surviving media specialists are finding themselves challenged to help their schools become more discerning consumers of new technologies.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE NYSUT ACTIVISTS TO SEEK FUNDS FOR PROGRAMS NEEDED TO RAISE STANDARDS ALBANY, N.Y. May 19, 1997 Some 500 education activists will jam the Capitol Tuesday in a grassroots effort to win support for critical programs that children need to get an early start on successful school careers and which help high school students meet higher academic standards. Making their second trip to Albany in two months, the volunteer lobbyists members of New York State United Teachers' Committee of 100 will arrive by bus about 8:45 a.m. to begin pressing public education's case in meetings with individual lawmakers and the Senate and Assembly leadership. "With a state budget agreement still likely to be weeks away, we want to be absolutely sure that the critical needs of public schools, colleges and universities remain fresh in the minds of lawmakers especially now that school budgets in their home districts are up for approval," said NYSUT President Thomas Y. Hobart Jr. NYSUT Executive Vice President Alan B. Lubin said the Committee of 100 a group that outgrew its name many years ago will detail for lawmakers the impact that years of stagnant state support have had on public schools. In addition, the volunteer lobbyists will be seeking legislative backing for pre-kindergarten and full-day kindergarten, early intervention and remedial reading programs, and for the tools that students and their teachers need to meet the more challenging requirements being implemented by the Regents.

Amid growing criticism, the tour intends to shore up support for the USA Patriot Act, which violates at least three constitutional ammendments. Meanwhile, the expansion of police powers continues under Sen. Orrin Hatch's recently drafted Victory Act. One of the bill's aims is to re-define most drug offenses as narcoterrorism. Ashcroft's visit and proposed legal changes are bringing opposition from across the political spectrum here in Utah as well. A local call to action states, "These fascists seem to think that we Americans are cowardly and that we will allow them to steal our freedoms because they are afraid of terrorists." Benjamin Franklin once said, '"Those who would give up essential liberty, to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither.'" On Monday August 25th, as Ashcroft was speaking to law enforcement at a hotel in downtown SLC, protesters gathered outside. For several hours, over 150 people occupied both sides of Main Street near the entrance of the hotel, and many marched around the block.

Blogs Give Insight into Iraq
6/10/2004 11:32 am According to a story by the BBC News Online , blogs have become an increasingly popular form of communication in Iraq. While Salam Pax, " The Baghdad Blogger ," gained attention last year for providing insight into daily life in the country, a number of other Iraqi citizens have joined in the blogging movement (for example, see The Model Nabil's Blog , and the Baghdad Burning Blog ). These sites offer direct windows into how the conflict has changed people's daily lives (see this entry in The Model , for example). Berkman Center Executive Director John Palfrey explained to the BBC that blogs are ideal "for those who want to read first-hand accounts and hear authentic voices from interesting parts of world." Media Center Lawsuit Challenging Women's Health Act is "the Grinch that Stole New Year's" Catholic Agencies Seek Permission for Continued Discrimination Against Women The New York State Catholic Conference will become "the grinch that stole New Year's" for thousands of New York women, Family Planning Advocates President JoAnn Smith said today, decrying a legal action challenging the Women's Health and Wellness Bill, which goes into effect January 1. "Instead of looking forward to a New Year that is free of discrimination in women's health insurance coverage, thousands of employees of Catholic-affiliated social services agencies, hospitals, nursing homes and schools face the prospect of a protracted lawsuit in which their employers are seeking permission to continue to deny them important health insurance coverage," Smith said. Public rules should apply to agencies that serve and employ the public The lawsuit, announced today by the Catholic conference, has been filed on behalf of Catholic-affiliated social services agencies, hospitals, nursing homes and schools. These institutions hold licenses to serve the general public and also employ the general public, including many employees who are of other faiths, Smith pointed out, saying these agencies should be expected to "follow public rules, just like any another employer."
