SELECTION CRITERIA FOR SCHOOL LIBRARY MEDIA CENTER COLLECTIONS
The Baltimore County Public School policy states that each office in the Department of Instruction shall establish a Materials Review and Selection Committee to determine criteria for selecting materials to ensure that all instructional materials extend the knowledge and understanding of the Essential Curriculum. The following policy was developed by the Office of Library and Information Technology.
School library media specialists are responsible for the review, evaluation, and selection of the school library media collection. They are guided by the system-level selection policy that embodies the philosophy and procedures set forth in national, state, and county documents. Library media specialists work cooperatively with administrators and teachers to provide resources which represent diverse points of view, stimulate growth in thinking skills, and promote the overall educational program. Library media collections are developed to meet both curricular and personal needs. To ensure that these needs are met, library media specialists apply selection criteria and use recommended selection tools. All purchases, including gifts, should meet the same selection standards.
This selection policy reflects the philosophy and goals of the school system and supports the principles of intellectual freedom described in Information Power: Guidelines for School Library Media Programs the

Collaborations
In addition to the Partner Schools program, the Bertelsmann Partnership for Education values its work and collaborations with other schools and organizations. In some cases, informal collaborations may exist between the Foundation and other organizations, while in most cases, a more formal, contractual arrangement exists to support specific needs.
Typically, individual schools, districts and other non-profit organizations may contract services with Media Workshop. These services may include professional development youth development and curriculum development
Organizations or institutions typically hire Media Workshop staff to assist with their instructional technology needs and initiatives. Efforts often include and extend beyond the classroom environment as we assist organizations and staff with defining instructional models that involve the use of new media and technology. Generally, organizations are able to contract our services through state and federally funded programs such as the Targeted Instructional Staff Development grants, Learning Technology grants, National Science Foundation grants, or a variety of private and/ or corporate grants. CSD6, CSD18, Manhattan High School Superintendency, ASHS and the National Track and Field Hall of Fame, are just several examples of these “contractual collaborations.”
Please spend a moment and look through our comprehensive list of these collaborations as well as associated projects:

The Bill and Melinda Gates foundation has made a $12.5 million grant to Expeditionary Learning Outward Bound, Outward Bound's comprehensive school development organization. The funding will help create 20 small Expeditionary Learning high schools ultimately serving approximately 8,400 primarily low-income students.
"This grant enables the New York City Outward Bound Center to significantly scale up the work Outward Bound has been doing in our City's schools, to deepen our partnership with the NYC Department of Education and to be a real arm in implementing the Department's Children's First agenda. It provides us with the opportunity to not only deepen our work at the school level but also to be a part of an initiative which has the promise to transform high school education in the City and the country."-Richard Stopol, Executive Director of the New York City Outward Bound Center.

It hasn't been published or peer-reviewed, but in the last few days nearly 100 media outlets have reported on a questionable bit of number-crunching that tries to link soda consumption with diabetes. Five of the study's seven coauthors, it turns out, are certified obesity alarmists, and some have close ties with the self-described "food police" at the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI). A quick review of the "Fizzy Five" should make it very clear that their contribution to this study like CSPI's statistical malpractice in its report "Liquid Candy" was driven by anti-soda prejudice. Classroom Resources Regional Centers Directory New Media Classroom: Narrative, Inquiry, and Technology in the U.S. History Survey Expanding Horizons What Is the New Media Classroom? The New Media Classroom is a faculty development program. We help secondary school teachers and college professors integrate new mediathe latest technological toolsinto their humanities curriculum. We do this through regional training institutes and workshops in which we teach participants how to use the World Wide Web and innovative software programs. What Is the Aim of the Program? Our goal is fourfold. We aid faculty in:
    • Rethinking their traditional classroom practice
    • Developing strategies for using new technological tools in the classroom
    • Sharpening their technological skills
    • Advancing active learning using the new media.

What Is the Philosophy of the New Media Classroom? We believe that all teachers should have access to professional development programs on how to use the new, computer technology in their classrooms. Computer technology should be a powerful adjunct to proper classroom content and practice. We think that the new technology should be used to deepen and broaden the coverage offered by textbooks and lectures. The new technology gives students access to primary source materials at little or no cost.

Charter Schools Grow in Suburbs, Uneasily
    By Josh Barbanel
    New York Times
May 03, 2003 As a flamenco dancer from a local college performed in the auditorium, the school's energetic and experienced principal, Dorothy Trondle, walked the hallways recently and talked about the school's innovative English curriculum and its recognition as a national "School of Excellence." The idea underpinning the creation of the nation's 2,695 charter schools is that the money that districts now pay to educate a child follows the child to his new charter school, and therefore taxpayers face no added costs. Though this may make some sense in big city school districts, educators say that it falls apart in small suburban school systems. When a district loses one or two pupils per grade, they said, schools usually cannot eliminate even a single teacher. As a result, every child enrolled in the charter school means increased taxes. And, New York is not alone. In Massachusetts, school districts are pushing for a moratorium on new charter schools and the full restoration of a program, which had been eliminated, to provide state payments to cover some of the money lost by school districts when charter schools were created.

It is as much about cracking down on the school system's version of petty criminals - the chronic hall-walkers and the persistently disruptive - as it is about enhancing the school experience with dances and freshly painted walls. "That's what high school should be all about," Mr. Rotunno said. "School isn't about saying, 'This is a safe school because there's no one killing anybody.' " When Mr. Rotunno became principal a year ago this month, he received two gifts: a biography of former Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani from a former colleague, and from an anonymous admirer, a copy of the movie "Lean on Me," about Joe Clark, the principal famed for bringing Eastside High School in Paterson, N.J., under control by patrolling the hallways with a baseball bat. Mr. Rotunno cringed at the mention of Mr. Clark, but lit up when the topic turned to Mr. Giuliani, calling his own efforts at Kennedy "a microcosm of what he did."
