Tashkent
Last Updated: 02/29/00
Tashkent is capital of the country and of Tashkent Oblast. The population is 2,120,000 (1991 estimate). Located in an oasis near the Chirchiq River in a cotton- and fruit-growing region, Tashkent is a major industrial and transportation center and is the largest city in the Central Asia. It has industries producing machinery, cotton and silk textiles, chemicals, tobacco products, and furniture. A center of Uzbek culture, Tashkent has several libraries and is the seat of the Uzbek Academy of Sciences and numerous other academic institutions. Bukhara Last Updated: 02/29/00 Bukhara, a city in Uzbekistan, in Central Asia, and the capital of Bukhara region. The city is situated in an irrigated oasis on the Shakhrud Canal, in the valley of the Zeravshan River. An 8-mile (13-km) rail spur connects old Bukhara with the newer rail town of Kagan (formerly, Novaya Bukhara, or New Bukhara). Kagan is on the main line that links Tashkent with Krasnowodsk. History The date of the founding of Bukhara, one of Central Asia's oldest cities, is not known. The city is first mentioned in Chinese chronicles of the 5th century. When the Arabs arrived in the 7th century to introduce Muslim culture, they found a thriving trade center on the Silk Road from China. Bukhara became a center of Muslim learning under the Persian Samanid dynasty in the 10th century. The city was destroyed by Genghis Khan in 1220. Later rebuilt, it had another period of prosperity in the 16th century under the Shaybanids. As maritime routes replaced the old caravan trails, Bukhara declined, and its emir accepted Russian suzerainty in 1868. After the Bolshevik Revolution in 1917, the old emirate existed for a short while as a Soviet republic (1920–1924) before it was carved up among the new ethnic republics of Turkmenia, Uzbekistan, and Tadzhikistan. Population: 249,600 (1991 est.).

But while New York boasts a recently revitalized urban center, Los Angeles is the classic example of sprawl and decentralization, with multiple clusters of economic and social activity dispersed throughout its surrounding area. This volume presents advanced studies that consider this fundamental difference between New York and Los Angeles while comparing and contrasting politics and culture in each region. An esteemed group of contributors from a wide variety of disciplines considers issues that include immigration, the effects of race and class on residence, the efficacy of public schools, the value of welfare reform, the meaning of mayoral politics, the function of charter reform, and the respective roles of the cinema and art scenes in each city. Capturing much of what is new and vibrant in urban studies today

And like most states, it is far from being homogenous. The terrain ranges from some of the highest mountains in the eastern seaboard to lower lying valleys and foothills. Getting a handle on what's actually in the Adirondacks can be daunting. Go to overview map. advertisement DisplayAds ("Top,Right,TopRight,Right1,Frame1,Middle!Middle", "250", "250", "parks"); The tallest sticks would throw up the jutting High Peaks , the most famous area in the Adirondacks. This is where you'll find the highest mountains set against some of the most dramatic lakes in the range. In some ways this is the heart of the Adirondacks. It's been the stomping ground of generations of the rich and the rustic. The plants and animals of the high mountains are similar to those of Canada's North Woods, with conifers predominating, especially red spruce and balsam fir. Tiny tiny alpine pockets crown the 11 highest peaks. Related in character, but with softer and lower peaks, the

The Garden has a fine collection of hardy ferns that are planted in the far corner of the Native Plant Garden The significance of the F. Gordon Foster Hardy Fern Collection is not only a monument to the fern-growing ability of Mr. Foster, who donated his collection to NYBG in l986, but it also demonstrates the diversity of ferns, showing their great variation of formfeathery lady ferns, leathery wood-ferns, straplike hart's tonguesand also shows the diverse habitats where they are successfuldry rocks, moist woodland soils, and swampy situations by streams and bogs. For the most part, ferns are easy to grow. Some indeed are small and require special conditions, but there are literally hundreds of species in temperate regions of the world that can be grown with ease. When I acquire a fern plant, I dig a hole, add a shovel of compost, water it once, and it's on its own. Even with this lighthearted treatment, I have over 130 kinds in my own backyard, on a moist, lightly-shaded slope in northern Westchester. Once established, ferns require hardly any carea procrastinator's delightneeding only occasional thinning or weeding, even that being minimal. The New York Botanical Garden's hardy fern collection includes common favorites, such as the dainty maidenhair fern (

Introduction With funding from a small grant obtained from the Oceanside Teacher Center, we made a two week circumnavigation of New York State, photographing geologic features and collecting rock and fossil specimens. The objective of this trip was to assemble a collection of specimens and digital media (photos, Quicktime movies, and Quicktime panoramas) that could be used to construct a large hallway display at Oceanside High School and to provide teachers with supporting materials to use in the classroom. The digital media collected were also used to construct a supporting web site (" Geology of New York State ") which we will continue to add to as additional localities are visited and imaged. Description of the Project A large hallway display of New York State geology and fossils based on the Generalized Bedrock Geology of New York State map located in the Regents Earth Science Reference Tables was created at Oceanside High School (Figure 1). This display keys actual specimens of rocks and fossils (Figure 2 and Figure 3) to a large background map and geologic time scale using digital images, diagrams, and text, bringing materials studied in the Regen ts Earth Science curriculum directly into the school. Oceanside students and teachers can now get an up-close view of the rocks and fossils found in various regions of New York State without having to travel to these regions. To supplement the hallway display, earth science teachers are given a package of materials for classroom presentations that interface with the hallway display. These materials include a PowerPoint presentation tour of the geology and fossils of New York on CD along with related overhead transparencies and a specimen kit to be used for classroom demonstrations. In addition, a web site explaining and illustrating the geologic regions of New York

EPA Notifies New York State of Regions with Smog Problems
For Immediate Release: Thursday, December 4, 2003 (#03141) New York, N.Y. Areas that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) believes should be required to reduce emissions to meet new ground-level ozone health standards were identified in a letter sent to New York state today. The EPA letter is in response to the state's suggested boundaries for attainment and nonattainment areas for a new national ozone standard. Ozone at ground level, commonly known as " smog ," is a public health concern because it can exacerbate already-existing respiratory problems, and may cause new respiratory ailments. Under a previous federal standard, the Agency determined that the New York City metropolitan area and western New York state had smog problems. Under the new more protective eight-hour standard, EPA has found that additional areas of New York state must also address smog problems, including: Syracuse, Rochester, the Capital District and Jamestown. EPA today informed New York of its intention to make these new designations, which, if finalized, would require the state to prepare a comprehensive clean air plan to address them. New York has an opportunity to respond to the Agency's proposals. EPA will make final designations by April 15, 2004.
