In 1986, singer/songwriter Paul Simon was recording the blockbuster "Graceland" album in Manhattan. Each day, on his way to the recording studio, Paul passed a homeless woman. Over time, the two became friends. Struck by this woman's plight, Paul asked Irwin Redlener, M.D. , a pediatrician and colleague from the "USA for Africa" project, to help him do something tangible for New York City's homeless population. Together, they toured the squalid now-defunct Martinique Welfare Hotel. To their horror, they found more than a thousand hungry, homeless children living amidst squalor and poverty. Few of these children were receiving any basic health care. Determined to change this appalling situation, Paul and Irwin decided to do something that would make a difference. In 1987, they created The New York Children's Health Project, The Children's Health Fund's first mobile medical program. Medical teams aboard specially designed vans used state-of-the-art equipment and a computerized patient tracking system to bring much needed pediatric care to New York City's homeless children.

This year, Philadelphia Primary School (Indian River School District) held their Team Nutrition Days on March 27-29th. Kelly Falgiano, Miss New York State, came and talked to our students about nutrition and the important part it plays in her life. She spent about two hours with the students. Everyone enjoyed her presence.
Miss New York Dairy Council was also here and went to each classroom and put on different demonstrations. There was also a milk machine here and samples of chocolate and whole milk were handed out. Approximately 20 of our middle school students came from their classroom of Culinary Arts (Home and Careers). They put on a display of a correct way and a wrong way to set up a table. They also handed out samples from the food pyramid and had the students put them in the right place.

Note: Clients with injuries or in special population groups are required to supply their fitness trainer with a written physician's clearance. Personal fitness trainers are not doctors and (in most cases) are not physical therapists. Therefore it is necessary for your trainer to coordinate your fitness training and nutritional program with your doctor, physiatrist, physical therapist, occupational therapist, chiropractor, special nutritional counselor, and/or alternative medicine healthcare provider(s). Weight Loss and Body Fat Reduction We prefer you to think in terms of "fat loss" instead of "weight loss." The aim of getting in shape is how you look and how healthy you are. The goal should be to get leaner. This means changing your body composition so that you have less fat and more muscle. Since muscle weighs more than fat per cubic measurement, absolute weight loss should not be the sole measure of your success. The important results should be how your body looks, how your clothes fit and how you feel. A visible six pack of abs is only accomplished by both building the abdominal muscles and shedding the fat that covers them up.

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
March 30, 2004 GOVERNOR PROCLAIMS “HEALTHY HEART” DAY IN NEW YORK STATE Announces New Efforts Including Nearly $700,000 to Fight Heart Disease and Stroke
Governor George E. Pataki today proclaimed “Healthy Heart Day” in New York State and announced aggressive efforts including $683,000 in upcoming grant awards to reduce obesity, physical inactivity and other preventable causes of cardiovascular disease to ensure that New Yorkers live longer, healthier lives. “New York has one of the best health care systems in the world and whether it's providing health care to children, new cancer treatments to women, or ensuring proper care for the elderly, improving health care has always been one of our top priorities,” Governor Pataki said. “It's clear that improving cardiovascular health among New Yorkers, especially children, is yet another health priority that we are accomplishing by implementing critical initiatives to promote the importance of physical activity, good nutrition and overall heart-healthy choices. Today and everyday, these important efforts will translate directly into tangible health benefits and a higher quality of life for New Yorkers.” Paul Hartman, Director of Advocacy for the American Heart Association, said, “We're proud to join with Governor Pataki, the New York State Department of Health and the New York State Legislature in advancing awareness about the risk factors and the need for prevention and treatment of heart disease in New York State. Heart disease causes a tremendous burden both on communities and families, and on the finances of government health insurance programs. By working together in an educational partnership we can begin to reduce the death and disability associated with heart disease in New York State.”

    Community Health Major
46 credits required One of the overall goals of health as an academic field is to create a sense of health and well-being in communities by providing education regarding prevention of disease through positive health behaviors, as opposed to treatment after the fact. Prevention of illness and injury through education is proven to decrease the prevalence of the major health risks in the United States today. Currently, nine of the ten leading causes of death in the country are lifestyle-related. According to the Federal Government's "Healthy People 2000" document, two out of every three deaths and one in three hospitalizations in the U.S. are linked to six main risk factors, which are all preventable: tobacco use, alcohol abuse, accidents, high blood pressure, obesity, and gaps in medical screening. Community Health Major Requirements
The community health major requires students to successfully complete 25 core course credits, 9 credits in a concentration area, and a 12-credit internship. Students who wish to declare the community health major must write an entrance essay. Students will declare the major, and immediately following, complete the essay. The essay is evaluated and scored by faculty members; the student's identity remains anonymous. Students who earn 75% or above will not be required to take an additional writing course. Students who earn below 75% must take a writing course specified by the faculty and pass with a 2.0 or higher. Before being allowed to register for the internship, students must have a 2.5 grade point average overall in classes required for the major, and must have at least a 2.0 in each individual class.
