"WE CAN TAKE THEM DOWN" CLAIMS UPSTART EDITOR
New York - Insiders at the headquarters of the sprawling, $2.4 billion media and communications conglomerate, the New York Times Company , claim that members of the Sulzberger family, long time owners and publishers of the New York Times are concerned about trends showing a weakness in their overall marketing strategy. Sources say they are particularly concerned about an upstart publication from the smallest town in Texas, the Round Top Register
On the surface, this report seems far fetched. Many experts doubt this multi-faceted media empire, which owns the Boston Globe , seven radio stations, a variety of successful magazines and commands a daily circulation of over a million subscribers, has anything to worry about from a small, rural Texas quarterly newspaper with a circulation still less than one hundred.
However, persistent rumors continue to surface. A source who asked not to be named who heard it from a woman on the subway who heard it from a magazine vendor that has a shop not far from the 43rd street headquarters who heard it from a man he won't identify, attributes the following quote to a "Mr. Vigliotti."
According to our source, Mr. Vigliotti owns a solid waste company that, along with the companies of twenty-three other garbage magnates, is currently under indictment for alleged participation in a Mafia dominated trash cartel.

Corporate Profile: The New York Times
By Doug Henwood The New York Times is not only the newspaper of record for the Fortune 500, it is also a member in good standing of that elite group of corporate giants. Though a number of press critics have dissected the ideological biases, deadly prose and institutional arrogance of the Times , its business operations are less frequently studied. Doug Henwood, editor of Left Business Observer (from which this article is adapted), reports that today's Times is dancing to a marketing beat. In 1878, Adolph Ochs bought a failing paper, the Chattanooga Times , for $5,570 in mostly borrowed money. Through a dedication to "objective" reporting, nepotism, upgraded typography, tight management and civic boosterism, he made his first Times profitable. Eighteen years later, with $75,000 of borrowed money and a letter of recommendation from President Grover Cleveland, Ochs repeated his trick with the New York Times Ochs made the New York Times a profitable operation, but, as legend goes, profit was never Job One; Wall Street analysts joke that the paper was run like a nonprofit enterprise for most of its life. That began to change in 1973, a year when only deft accounting allowed the company to report a profit. This brush with death converted the paper's management to the cult of Marketing. Zeal for the religion is now total: the title of the Times' 1987 Annual Report is "The Marketing of Excellence." In his introduction, Times executive editor Max Frankel boasted that "The News Department of the New York Times does not wince at the thought of `marketing'...their many products."

The 2003 New York Film Critics Circle Awards were selected on Monday, Dec 15 2003. See The 2003 Winners Welcome to the web site of the New York Film Critics Circle, an organization of film reviewers from New York-based publications that exists to honor excellence in U.S. and world cinema. Founded in 1935, the Circle 's membership includes critics from daily newspapers, weekly newspapers and magazines. Every year in December the organization meets in New York to vote on awards for the previous calendar year's films. Among the categories: best picture, director, screenplay, actor, actress, supporting actor, supporting actress, cinematography, animated movie and best first film. Special stand-alone awards are also given to individuals and organizations that have made substantial contributions to the art of cinema, including producers, directors, actors, writers, critics, historians, film restorers and service organizations. The Circle's awards are often viewed as harbingers of the Oscar nominations , which are announced each February. The Circle's awards are also viewed perhaps more accurately as a principled alternative to the

By Mindy McAdams
In 1991 I was asked to develop a course in magazine copy editing for New York University's Management Institute. I taught the course for two semesters, spring 1992 and fall 1992 (I would have gone on teaching it, but I left New York). NYU had long offered courses in copy editing and proofreading, but they were focused on practices in the book publishing business. When I started teaching the course, I had been a copy editor at Time magazine for three years. In 1993 I left Time to become a copy editor at The Washington Post . I had also worked as a copy editor in the book business (two years as an in-house copy editor at Dell Publishing and free-lance work for Doubleday and Warner Books). So I knew how magazine and book editing requirements differ. (You can find out more if you look at What follows is the syllabus for my course. I think it may be useful for anyone who wants to teach copy editing skills and also for people who are curious about jobs in publishing. The class met for two hours, once a week, for twelve weeks.

    WHAT ARE MORGUES?
The Center for American History holds the clippings morgues for three major New York City news sources: The New York Times , the New York Herald Tribune , and the New York Journal American , and, as of 2001, the clipping archive of Newsweek, Inc. Morgues are collections of reference clippings files maintained for the news sources' researchers and reporters. Morgue files do not include entire issues or intact front pages. Articles from various information sources concerning newsworthy individuals and topics were clipped and gathered together by subject headings, not dates. Clippings morgues provide an excellent resource for research, since actual copies of all the articles desired on one topic are contained in one place, and not scattered throughout microfilmed, chronological reels of entire publications. We provide access to all four morgues to patrons who visit the Center in person, as well as to those who contact us by telephone, electronic mail, and conventional mail. We will search for clip files on specific topics or people that are provided to us.
