"I don’t want to be in a city with 10,000 Republicans. I wouldn’t last long, especially knowing Republicans are taking up seats in my favorite restaurants," said Maryann Ford, a 36-year-old management consultant who, like many New Yorkers, is plotting an elaborate escape from New York during the week of the Republican National Convention. Step 1 was arranging to spend the week of August 30 on Cape Cod; step 2 was posting an innocent-looking listing on craigslist.org: "Charming UWS 1 BR for Republican Convention," she wrote, even though the idea of right-wingers sleeping in her bed gives Ms. Ford the chills. To make up for the ick factor, she’s asking $2,500 for her second-floor walk-up one-bedroom—almost double what she pays in rent each month. "I wouldn’t gouge Democrats," said Ms. Ford. "I’d charge a fairer price. Some pot-smoking kids could definitely call me and say, ‘Dude, we’ve got to change the world, we’ve got to elect John Kerry,’ and I would relent." Whether it’s braying Republicans or pot-smoking protesters or bomb-toting terrorists, as summer turns the corner and the surreality of the Republican National Convention comes into view, New Yorkers are waking up to the fact that being here between Aug. 30 and Sept. 2—when 48,000 conventioneers (including 12,000 delegates, as well as lobbyists, elected officials, party hacks and journalists) are expected—might very well be the equivalent of … well, it’s hard to imagine.

McCarthy on Extension of Public Comment Period on Dredging …says dredging presents danger to LI livelihoods Washington, D.C. Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy heralded the announcement by the Environmental Protection Agency that it would extend the public comment period on the proposed dumping of dredging materials from Connecticut into Long Island Sound. “Open water disposal of toxic dredge spoils in Long Island Sound at great risk for long term contamination and represent a clear and present danger to the livelihoods of thousands of Long Islanders. Residents should be given ample time to respond to this threat to our environment and economy,” Representative Carolyn McCarthy said. “I’m glad EPA reconsidered, and the public should take advantage of this opportunity to have their voices heard,” McCarthy added. The Southern Solstice has passed, and with it the deadline for 9/11 families to file their claims with the "Feinberg Fund," as it has come to be known. Of an official death toll of 2976, claims have been filed by for 2,851. The claim involves signing off on any future litigation against the government, the airlines, the airports or any security firms. One hundred and twenty-five claims remain outstanding, but little has been written about any of these families. Where is the coverage of those insisting on finding out what really happened on that day before they sign away their "claims?" Like many others, she wanted to know why, on May 16, 2002, National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice stated that she didn’t "think anybody could have predicted that these people would take an airplane and slam it into the World Trade Center… That they would try to use an airplane as a missile, a hijacked airplane as a missile."

HOME New York Teacher Contact Questions about military service
Feb. 12, 2003 With wartime issues weighing heavily on many of our members' minds, we and the Teachers' Retirement System have been receiving a lot of questions about about how military service affects retirement. See related article on page 5. Here are some recent answers provided by TRS experts. I am a 35-year-old teacher working part-time under contract with my school district. I may be called to military duty and need to take an unpaid leave of absence from my job. When I return, will I have to do anything to receive credit for my military service? Full-time or part-time teachers under contract who are honorably discharged from active duty must return to a public employer covered by state TRS within 90 days and claim their military service. Substitute teachers (per diem) are not eligible for military credit with state TRS. I am more than 55 years old and have 36 .5 years of credited service in state TRS and I was just called to military duty. Should I wait until I return, claim my military service and then file for retirement so that I can reach the maximum 79 percent of my final average salary? No. With 36.5 years of credit, you have already earned 77 percent of your final average salary. If you wait to retire, you would be giving up one full year of your pension to receive an additional 2 percent of your final average salary. In most cases, it would take more than 15 years for the increased pension to make up for the one-year loss of your retirement allowance.
