The New York Times CONNECTICUT WEEKLY DESK At a Hartford Seminary, a Military Matter October 12, 2003 Sometime this fall, Major Shareda Hosein, 42, an Army reservist and student at Hartford Seminary, will find out if the Army has accepted her application to become the first female Muslim chaplain in the history of the United States military. Ms. Hosein of Quincy, Mass., who has been in the Army for 23 years, described herself as a "glass-half-full person," but she is also realistic. She knows recent headlines about Capt. James J. Yee, a Muslim chaplain in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, suspected of espionage, have not helped her case. Some religious leaders wondered whether the military would risk offending conservative Arab allies by putting a woman in a clerical position unheard of in much of the Islamic world. Dr. Ingrid Mattson, Ms. Hosein's supervisor at Hartford Seminary and the director of the school's Islamic Chaplaincy Program, said Ms. Hosein, a lifelong Muslim who sprinkles her conversation with references to Buddha and Jesus, is an ideal candidate for military chaplaincy. Dr. Mattson said were it not for the sensitive political climate, Ms. Hosein would certainly be a chaplain by next spring. "If she doesn't get in, something's fishy," she said.

The New York State Office of Public Security was established by Executive Order of Governor George E. Pataki on October 10, 2001. James K. Kallstrom, former Assistant Director in Charge of the New York Division of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, was named inaugural Director of the office. Effective May 8, 2002, Mr. Kallstrom was appointed Senior Policy Advisor to the Governor for Counter-Terrorism, with John W. Scanlon, former Chief of Patrol of the New York City Police Department, assuming the role as Director. On July 23, 2003 Governor Pataki announced the appointment of James W. McMahon as the Director of the New York State Office of Public Security. McMahon, who served as the Superintendent of the New York State Police for nine years, retired from the State Police after 37 years of distinguished service leading one of the country's largest police agencies and developing close working relationships with Federal and local law enforcement. The mission of the Office, as outlined in the Governor's Executive Order, lies in "overseeing, directing and coordinating public security resources and reviewing public security policies, protocols and strategies of State agencies including, but not limited to, the Division of State Police, the Division of Military and Naval Affairs, State Emergency Management Office, Department of Health, Department of Environmental Conservation, Division of Criminal Justice Services, Department of State, Office of Technology and the Department of Transportation."

Preppies Take Note: Military Schools Outperform You.
Psychologist says schools’ similarity to parents of first-borns is reason why. Santa Ana, California (PRWEB) September 4, 2003 - Military schools, long associated with strict rules, honor codes and juvenile delinquents, perform better than other schools. Behavioral psychologist Thomas K. Connellan, PhD., says he knows why. He says it’s because military schools mirror the parenting given to first-borns. Conellan’s studies show that while military schools have a greater percentage of black and Hispanic students, and that half of the students live below the poverty line, they still outperform traditional schools. Military school students score sixty percent higher than the national average in reading, second only to Connecticut public schools, and boast a ninety-seven percent graduation rate.

In most cases, you can drive in NYS if you have a valid driver license from another country. See " Drivers From Other Nations ". The minimum driving age in NYS is 16. If you become a resident of NYS, you must get a NYS driver license within 30 days and surrender your out-of-state driver license. Normally, you cannot have a NYS driver license and a driver license from another state, but there are exceptions. It is a violation of Federal law to hold more than one commercial driver license (CDL). Learner Permits and Junior Licenses From Another State NYS restricts driving privileges if:

At the same time, the Faculty and Administration of New York Law School have encouraged students to join them in a letter-writing campaign strongly urging the United States Military to stop discriminating against openly lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered applicants for employment with the Judge Advocate General's offices and in the military as a whole. Richard Matasar, Dean and President of New York Law School, has issued a statement about military recruitment on campus that can be read at the Law School's Web site

    September 15, 2003
An Open Letter to the New York Law School Community: This week recruiters from the United States armed services will be on campus interviewing students and making presentations regarding employment with their Judge Advocate General's offices. Military policy excludes employment of applicants who are openly lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgendered. New York Law School has long repudiated discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, gender, sexual orientation, marital or parental status, national origin, age or handicap. The facilities of the Office of Career Services at New York Law School are available only to employers whose practices are consistent with that policy of non-discrimination. This policy has been consistent with the practices recommended by the Association of American Law Schools, and with those of most law schools in the United States. The policy did not originate in disrespect or disregard for the military, but rather in an affirmation of support for qualified applicants who should be judged on their merits, rather than on factors unrelated to their ability to perform their jobs. Such a policy is also of the greatest importance because of the central role the American legal profession plays in the functioning of American democracy which rests on the rule of law, at the heart of which is the constitutionally guaranteed promise of equal protection of the laws. The American legal profession must be open to all Americans who have the desire and ability to be lawyers.

Sharon Shea-Keneally, principal of Mount Anthony Union High School in Bennington, Vermont, was shocked when she received a letter in May from military recruiters demanding a list of all her students, including names, addresses, and phone numbers. The school invites recruiters to participate in career days and job fairs, but like most school districts, it keeps student information strictly confidential. "We don't give out a list of names of our kids to anybody," says Shea-Keneally, "not to colleges, churches, employers nobody." But when Shea-Keneally insisted on an explanation, she was in for an even bigger surprise: The recruiters cited the No Child Left Behind Act, President Bush's sweeping new education law passed earlier this year. There, buried deep within the law's 670 pages, is a provision requiring public secondary schools to provide military recruiters not only with access to facilities, but also with contact information for every student or face a cutoff of all federal aid.
