The New York Society Library, the oldest in the city, was founded in 1754 by the New York Society, a civic-minded group formed in the belief that the availability of books would help the city to prosper. A subscription library, it now contains nearly two hundred thousand volumes the result of the tastes of its members over almost the last quarter millennium. Although this is primarily a library for the general reader, it has considerable potential for research. Holdings may be searched using either the Library's card catalogs or its new online catalog. Members may borrow books and have the use of several reading and study rooms on the upper floors; they can also browse in the stacks. Non-members are invited without charge to use the ground floor for reading and reference.

Several different search strategies can be employed and the limiting feature can be particularly useful. Currently the CMS online catalog contains records of books, monographs, periodicals and photographs. In the future, records for catalogued collections in CMS Archives will be added as work progresses. ABOUT THE LIBRARY Of particular note is the library’s large collection of "grey" literature (materials that are not available through the usual publishing channels and are difficult to obtain). Characteristic of this type of literature are working papers, occasional papers, government reports, dissertations, pre-published works and the like. Typically these materials represent the cutting edge of scholarship and current thinking in the field and are an important resource for researchers.

Search 10,000 historic photographs from the libraries and archives of york.
http://www.imagineyork.co.uk/
This site will eventually allow you to look at up to 10 000 historic photographs from the libraries and archives of York. These photographs show the many changes that have taken place in the city over the last 150 years, and include national and local events of note, such as the first plane to visit the city, parades, galas and processions, slum clearances and "modernisation". We will be adding images continuously until June 2004 and as the site develops it will offer a series of themed "guided tours" around areas of interest such as Wartime York and Royal York. There will also be a virtual reality element which will include material taken from the wider collections - building plans, maps and censuses. It is hoped to include oral history records in video and sound form. You can search by theme, key word, date, photographer and location. Click on the "browse" radio button if you would like to see more about what the database holds. If a photograph has a personal meaning for you, you can send your memories to us and we will add them to the site. It is also possible to buy a high quality copy if you see a photograph you would like to own. DATA PROTECTION/PRIVACY: If you supply us with personal information as part of Imagine York's services, such as your address or email address, we will hold your personal information in accordance with the Data Protection Act 1998. We will ensure personal information is held securely and only for as long as necessary for Imagine York's services to run smoothly.
