The New York Times gets an 'F' for geography Posted by Aron on December 18 2002 (Wednesday) : 09:30 PM

The American Jewish community has been on a rampage these past two years because of their perception of "bias" against Israel in the press. A prominent New York rabbi even led a boycott of the New York Times a few months ago over an issue too ridiculous to repeat here.
But as Michael Brown points out , bias and inaccuracy are par for the course.
I was an invited speaker at a teach-in at Workman's Circle, a couple weeks ago. One of the panels was comprised of representatives from the media. They cogently explained the difficulties the press faces in trying to present complex issues. Brown also discusses some of these as well. So I would say for the most part, at least in the news sections, it's not bias, but time constraints, business constraints, ignorance, lack of access and a host of similar reasons that cause the press to be inaccurate.
As a reader, one needs to be very cautious. Try to find multiple sources on any story. Learn which reporters and which media outlets are most trustworthy and accurate. Try to find alternative sources and viewpoints on any issue. By the way, these are rules I myself follow in writing for this weblog. I spend quite a bit of time researching the features, and try to verify, to the extent possible, any statement I present as a "fact."
Opinion, of course is a different matter. Here the reader has to apply different criteria. An argument can be cogent, logical, coherent or not. As I noted elsewhere, an analysis can meet these criteria even if you don't agree with it. It is usually in the premises and conclusion that the writer expresses his values. So whether a reader accepts or rejects an analysis, is not only dependent on how good the argument is, but whether the reader shares values with the author.

Geography Explained New York State, Labor Market Regions, Metropolitan Areas, and Counties
New York State consists of 62 counties. Counties are the building blocks used to build progressively larger geographic areas for which labor market statistics are reported. These larger areas include metropolitan areas (MAs) and labor market regions (LMRs). If the population of a metropolitan area is more than 1 million it may be defined as a Consolidated Metropolitan Statistical Area (CMSA). A CMSA is composed of separate component areas called Primary Metropolitan Statistical Area (PMSA). There are four PMSAs in New York State for which detailed labor market information is available (see list below). All four of these areas are part of the much larger New York-Northern New Jersey-Connecticut CMSA. Labor market regions correspond to ten geographic areas of the state, which are defined by the New York State of Labor, each of which is served by a Department of Labor regional analyst. For a list of New York State LMRs and their component counties, see below. To contact the regional analyst in your area, click

I n collecting cartographic materials relating to the events of 9/11, the Library's Geography and Map Division is concentrating on documenting the role maps played in managing the recovery effort. Traditional surveying and mapping techniques as well as modern electronic and remote sensing technologies were employed to aid the rescue and recovery operations, including remote sensing and aerial imagery, digital orthophotography, cutting-edge laser (light detection and rangingLIDAR) technology with the capability of producing accurate elevation data, and thermal imagery for mapping hot spots in the rubble. T hese mapping initiatives directed at the federal, state, and municipal levelssometimes in association with the private-sectorprovided important geographic and cartographic resources to help officials evaluate damage, monitor the progress of recovery, and provide for the safe deployment of personnel.

Geography Land of lakes and forests Finland is the fifth largest country in the European Union (EU) and is the most northerly state on the mainland of Europe. Approximately 130,500 square miles (338,000 sq. km), Finland is similar in size to the state of Montana. However, it is narrower and longer with 690 miles (1100 km) stretching between its southern and northern tips. Thousands of islands and small cliffs dot the southern and southwestern coast of Finland in the Baltic Sea. Åland, the most recognizable set of islands, is located between Finland and Sweden and boasts more than 6,500 isles and islands. Many important relics of the Stone, Iron and Bronze Ages have been found there. .

Counties of New York State
NOTE: It is quite common for county boundaries to have changed considerably between the 1830s and today. Those which were in very rural areas are apt to have been split up into smaller counties as the population increased. For now, though, I must use current maps, and make corrections later.
    Albany
Bordered on the east by the Hudson River , with the city of Albany around the middle of that boundary line. The Mohawk river , where it joins the Hudson around 10 miles nort of Albany, comprises part of the northern border of the county.
    Clinton
Northernmost of the eastern border counties, it borders on most of the widest part of Lake Champlain, with Vermont on the other side of the lake. Quebec, Canada is its Northern neighbor, with no natural divider; only a straight longitudinal line. Its other neighbors are Franklin county on the west, and Essex on the South. Its biggest town is Plattsburgh, on the lake.
    Columbia
Bounded by the Hudson River on the west, and Connecticut and Massachusetts on the east. It is about one fourth of the way up the long eastern boundary of the state. Its major town is called

Lake Champlain is the chief northern feature of the valley, which also includes the Hudson River. The Hudson is noted for its beauty, as are Champlain and neighboring Lake George. West of the lakes are the rugged Adirondack Mts., another major vacationland, with extensive wildernesses and sports centers like Lake Placid and Saranac Lake. Mt. Marcy (5,344 ft/1,629 m), the highest point in the state, is near Lake Placid. The rest of NE New York is hilly, sloping gradually to the valleys of the St. Lawrence and Lake Ontario, both of which separate it from Ontario. The Mohawk River, which flows from Rome into the Hudson north of Albany , is part of the New York State Canal System 's Erie Canal, once a major route to the Great Lakes and the midwestern United States as well as the only complete natural route through the Appalachian Mts.

    Working in Virtual Teams
    Overcoming Time and Geography?
Following from the section on Virtual Organisations , this section will look at a different form of vitual group: The Virtual Team. The Encyclopedia from CALT at Insead offers a large selection of material that may be of general interest for this and other sections concerned with different types of virtual group. The concept of the virtual team is not clearly defined, and it often overlaps with notions such as the virtual or networked organization, the virtual workplace, virtual communities, electronic commerce and certain forms of teleworking. Virtual Teams are seen as essentially project or task focused groups. The team membership may be relatively stable (e.g. in an established sales team) or change on a regular basis (e.g. in project teams). Their members may be drawn from the same organization, (e.g. production planners and production operatives) or from several different organizations, (e.g. when projects involve consultants or external assessors). Further distinctions can be made on physical proximity, (i.e. whether or not team members are co-located and can interact face-to-face or are geographically separated) and by work-cycle synchronicity, (i.e. whether or not members interact in the same or different time periods). In contrast to home based work and telework For a further discussion of this topic, see
