And Other School 14 Curriculum Resources Because Troy is located in the Capital Region of New York, teachers at School 14 find it important that the children know and understand the history and geography of the state: we've accommodated their classroom needs with several relevant links. Hiking these Adirondack trails will give you an even broader view of what's out there on the Web, with examples not only for School 14's New York State history and geography curriculum, but for their general science curriculum as well, from ecology to botany to the life cycle of the butterfly. Visit these sites with a discriminating eye, trekkers. Articulate some of the questions that may already be forming in your head: Is this site for students or teachers? Or both? Or neither? How can it be used in the classroom? Is it of no use at all? Could most of the information found at the site be found in the school library? These are tough questions, but you really need to confront them before you bring the Internet in your classroom.

What kind of memorial should be constructed for the victims of the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon? Create a poster that shows an existing memorial you admire and provides brief background information on the person or event it commemorates. (The memorial could be national in scope, such as those in Washington, D.C., or one located in your community.) Mount the posters on the walls of the classroom. 1b. After everyone has viewed the posters, form groups of three students each to design a memorial for the victims of the World Trade Center attacks. Each group should present its idea in the form of a sketch or three-dimensional model.

A Showdown Looms For Europeanization By JOEL KOTKIN Special to the Sun

OS ANGELES — To most of the national press, including those based in New York, the California recall campaign seems like something between melodrama and farce. Yet behind the hype and silliness, there are some decidedly serious issues, including some that are serious for New York.
Strip away the hype and celebrity, the posturing and the largely misdirected press and broadcast coverage, and the recall election boils down to a broad power struggle.
On one side, aligned with both Governor Davis and his “mini-me ” would-be successor, Cruz Bustamante, are the current masters of Sacramento — the trial lawyers, the public employee unions, and the left-wing advocacy groups. Added to this motley coalition has been the Indian gaming interests, whose support for Mr. Bustamante has been a critical factor in his rising candidacy.
The priorities of this group are clear: expand the public sector at any cost, even if it devastates the state economy. Or, in the case of the Indians, use the state to keep the taxpayer’s proceeds from gambling to a minimum.
