Franktown Cemetery, Ashford Hollow,Cattaraugus County,New York
This is a FRANK family that came from Germany in the mid 1700's to Philadelphia, PA.
My 5th Great-Grandfather Henry Frank, and at least one brother Christopher, came and originally settled in PA. Henry then moved to the Mohawk Valley area of Herkimer County. Henry Frank's son, Henry Frank, married Gertrude Clapsaddle in 1769. Henry as a resident of German Flatts, enlisted in Captain Tare Putnam's Company, Colonel Marinus Willett's Regiment, in April 1777 and served nine months as a Private. He fought in the Battle of Oriskany. In the summer of 1778 Henry served five months as a Private in Captain Mark Dumuth's Company, Colonel Peter Bellinger's 4th Regiment, Tyron Company Militia. He was on guard for three months in 1779 as a guard for the Frontiers of Herkimer. In 1780 news was brought of the approach of Indians, and in the flight three of his children drowned in crossing the Mohawk River. Some of Henry's relatives moved from German Flatts and Frankfort area in 1816, to Ashford Hollow, Cattaraugus County, NY. This area became known as Franktown. The above cemetery is where many of my relatives and allied families are buried. Some of my cousins still live around this property.

Updated 22 May 2004 Central New York
Genealogical Society The Central New York Genealogical Society was formed in 1961 for the purpose of preserving, publishing and sharing genealogical information and resources. Toward that end, it has published Tree Talks , a highly respected, 64-page quarterly. Tree Talks is a valuable source of information on tens of thousands of people who lived in upstate New York. Each issue contains abstracts of significant records from upstate New York counties and is fully indexed, annually. During its six meetings held from March through November, the Society sponsors experienced genealogists to share their expert knowledge on the research and publication of ancestral information, and to educate in the professional standards of genealogy. Workshops and seminars are held occasionally, to assist beginners with their research. All meetings are open to the public for a small donation. Members engage in record-preservation projects to record, preserve, and report information for future researchers.

To come back to this main page from any page, click on the map of York County in the top left corner of the page.
  • The Toronto and York region were originally part of the Home District of Upper Canada, and began to be settled in about the 1790s. Toronto was once the city of York, and was given the name Toronto in 1834.
  • Beware, there's also a Toronto Township in Peel County which is located to the west of York County. Many early records give locations according to township, and they don't necessarily include the word "Township." It may be taken for granted. So if your reference just says "Toronto," it could mean either the city or the township.
  • York County is bounded on the north by Simcoe County and Lake Simcoe, on the east by Ontario County, which is now part of Durham County , on the west by Peel County , and on the south by Lake Ontario. York County as it Was York County Today
(Thanks to Sherri Pettit for these two maps.)
