The geographical focus is Albany, NY and surrounding counties ( Albany, Columbia, Rensselaer, Greene, Saratoga, Schenectady, Schoharie, Montgomery, and a small amount of Herkimer. Also there is a bit of Berkshire Co., MA, the western parts of which were considered to be in NY at one time. ). If a link has information for more than one county represented on this site, I usually have placed it in the category of New York State. You should not ignore that category. Columbia County was formed in 1786 out of Albany County. In 1799, the southern boundary of Columbia County was modified to include the portion of Livingston Manor located in Dutchess County. The county seat was originally at Claverack, but moved to Hudson in 1805, where it is today. Columbia County is in the northern part of the Hudson River Valley, about 125 miles north of New York city and 35 miles south-east of Albany. It is 36 miles from North to South, and 18 miles from East to West. It contains 688 square miles

In the 1780's a group of New England Quakers from Nantucket and surrounding areas created the city of Hudson. Welcome to my Pearsall genealogy page. I've created this site primarily so that others who share a common Pearsall lineage with me, would have an internet resource detailing the ancestry of our branch of the Pearsalls. Until I put this site up in the fall of 2000, there was no detailed information available on the web, pertaining to my branch of the Pearsalls. I hope that this site will enable some of my "cousins", who are not as fortunate as myself and my sister to be able to devote the time and effort in researching and presenting this information, the ability to see who we are and where we came from. An Overview of the Holdings of the Library The New York Genealogical and Biographical Society maintains a Library for those interested in doing genealogical, biographical, and historical research for themselves or others. The collections listed below include works whose historical scope encompasses the past four hundred years and whose genealogical scope includes nearly every ethnic group in the United States. While the geographic focal point of much of our holdings is New York and other northeastern states, we also collect material relating to all fifty states and many other countries. Published Works The Society's Library contains over 75,000 volumes of published material, including family genealogies (more than 11,000); U.S., state, and local histories; biographies; genealogy and history periodicals; reference materials ("how to conduct research," "where to find the sources"); and indexes to genealogical and biographical books and periodicals. Our collection of published works is open to the general public. Manuscript Collection This collection contains in excess of 30,000 unpublished and unique items, ranging from 16th-century deeds to research notes on 20th-century families. Among the items are transcriptions of New York church and cemetery records; genealogical charts; maps; personal diaries; vital records from family Bibles; and the compiled notes of prominent genealogists and historians, such as Kenn and Harriet Stryker-Rodda, Josephine Frost, Innes Getty, Alfred Vail, and Asa Fitch, among others.

    137th Voluntary Infantry Unit
This is a very brief history of the 137th NY. It was involved in some of the major battles during the latter part of the war in VA. The 137th New York Volunteer Infantry was organized at Binghampton, N. Y., Sept 25, 1862 with David Ireland Colonel: Koert S. Van Voorhees of Ithaca, Lieutenant-Colonel. A thousand men were raised in ten companies. Four companies were raised in Broome County, three in Tioga County and three in Tompkins County. Company H was raised from Tompkins Co. NY. Follow this link to find a roster for Company H, along with other information. Follow this link to find enlistment registers, which usually includes the soldiers age and place of enlistment. The regiment left the state, Sept 27, 1862, and travelled by rail to Frederick, MD via Elmira, Williamsport and Baltimore and Washington DC. They arrived there 12 days after the battle of Antietam. This unit fought at Chancellorville, with heavy losses. Within 8 months time of incorporation, the unit had lost 475 men to death, disease or discharges for disabilities. My own gr grandfather, Richard Hall was one of these men, leaving the unit due to a disabiling wound. He would later re-enlist in a PA unit, presumably trying to hide his earlier discharge.
